    The University of Minnesota, Department of Forest Resources is seeking a M.Sc. graduate student to participate in a research project examining the effects of simulated emerald ash borer (EAB) mortality and mitigation strategies on soil carbon and nutrient cycling in black ash wetlands in the upper Midwest. EAB is a nonnative insect that has caused extensive mortality of ash species since its introduction to North America. The effect of EAB mortality in black ash wetlands is expected to cause dramatic changes in ecosystem functions because ash is a dominant component of the forest structure.

    The wetland intern will spend about 90% of the study time in the field and 10% of the time in the office under the guidance of SMC’s wetland specialists. This position will allow the intern to apply classroom experiences to real world applications by collecting data for later analysis both by the intern and SMC staff. This position also will expose the intern to various aspects of SMC’s wetland regulatory program.

    The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Watershed Monitoring and Assessment Section is seeking three summer wetland monitoring assistants. The assistant will work with wetland monitoring biologists to identify, measure, collect, and record various types of biological, chemical and physical data from wetlands and shallow lakes located in Iowa. The objectives of this project are to assess the ecological condition of these systems related to statewide and federal initiatives to understand and improve water quality. Work will be performed primarily from late May to late August, with potentially flexible start / finish dates.
