  • Sunrise to Sunset: Supporting Children with Autism Through Their Day

    The Military Families Learning Network, a grant project within the Special Education department, will host a series of free webinars in 2019. These webinars will focus on supporting young children with autism and their families. Free continuing education credits for board certified behavior analysts are offered.     Freeman A. Hrabowski III, Ph.D. 75 Ed., the nationally known president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has earned a prestigious lifetime achievement award from a higher education organization.

    The American Council on Education will present the award—which is not given every year—to Hrabowski at its annual meeting next week.

  • Database Trial: APA's PsycEXTRA

    The Library is offering a trial of a database that includes “grey literature” resources in the social and behavioral sciences. PsycEXTRA is an APA database that compiles what is known as grey literature, materials that go beyond traditional peer-reviewed research material. It includes resources such as conference materials, factsheets, reports, standards/guidelines, and other hard-to-find content.

    The trial is available until April 24. If it gets a lot of use and we receive positive feedback, we will consider subscribing to it. Please spread the word about the trial if you are interested, and feedback is welcome. Thank you!

    A novel method of cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling is presented to analyze affiliation networks.   In this particular example, individuals consumption of information from a variety of political news outlets (CNN, FOX, MSNBC, New York Times, etc.) is considered.  Individual attributes are related to outlet properties to understand consumption as a function of political ideology.

    Professor Linda Herrera  gave a lecture in the series at Tampere University, Finland, on Youth Transitions to the Labour Market in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) on September 25. She talked about the notion of youth precarity and the growing disconnect between education and employment. 

  • Fall 2019 MSTE Friday Lunch Series: A Laser Light Show to Teach Coordinates

    Joe Muskin and Adam Poetzel will show how to create a coordinate path that a laser follows to generate a design. This simple apparatus uses mirrors and a laser that projects the image on fluorescent paper. Join us for this presentation on November 8 from noon-1:00 p.m. in Classroom 201, 505 E.     The Visual Resources Curator of the University Library, Sarah Christensen, is engaged in a project to identify lantern slides unique to the University of Illinois in subject matter or institutional significance, and then digitize and make these slides available.   • African American Studies 50th Anniversary Events

    In 1619, twenty enslaved Africans were imported into Virginia in an act that many people recognize as the beginning of the European slave trade to the Americas. This 400th anniversary is being widely observed. The activities listed here will help us understand why such historical developments are so significant. These are a series of events sponsored by the Department of African American Studies and many other units across the campus.

  • OCCRL director selected as ACPA Diamond Honoree

    Eboni Zamani-Gallaher was selected as an American College Personnel Association Diamond Honoree, which recognizes individuals who have made sustained contributions to higher education and to students affairs, ultimately enhancing students’ experiences. Zamani-Gallaher is the director of the Office of Community College Research and Leadership and a professor of higher education in the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership.

  • Spring Break: STUDY IN SPAIN

    Collaborating with Centre de Formació Permanent at Universitat Politècnica de València (URV), this study abroad trip aims to provide students an overview of education in the Spanish region and a comparative experience between the European and American education systems.

    On this trip, students will visit URV, attend seminars at the College of Education, visit local schools, tour local cultural sites such as Reus Art Nouveau tour, and spend the last day in Barcelona.

  • Individuals needed to host French students for one month this winter

    Local families, couples, and single individuals are needed to host French exchange students from the University of Lyon from Jan. 29 to March 4. This program offers an excellent way for both the traveling students and individuals in Champaign-Urbana to learn about cultural differences and develop new friendships. The students will spend nearly every day in classrooms at Stratton Elementary School and will participate in campus activities during numerous evenings.   • University Primary School Enrollment Begins

    University Primary School is now accepting enrollment applications for the 2017-2018 academic year. University Primary School is the University of Illinois, College of Education lab school, serving children preschool through fifth grade in a Reggio Emilia, project-based curriculum. For more information, visit the school website: http://education.illinois.edu/ups or call 217-333-3996. University Primary School is located on campus at 51 Gerty Drive, Champaign in the Children's Research Center building. Children must be 3 years old on or before September 1st to enroll in the preschool classroom and 5 years old on or before September 1st to enroll in kindergarten.

    Families applying to the school are invited to attend the Community Open House on Wednesday February 8 between 9:00 a.m.-12:00 noon for preschool and 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. for grades K-5; children are encouraged to visit at this time. Families may also choose to schedule a site visit outside of the Open House time. Enrollment applications may be downloaded from the website or picked up at the school office. Applications submitted by March 10, 2017 will be given first consideration for enrollment.

  • Local Schools Research Form Deadline

    If you want to do research in Champaign, Urbana, Danville or Decatur this semester, you must have your School Research Form completed and submitted by February 11, 2015.You should have IRB approval before submitting that form and be prepared to upload the form, approval letter, consents and instruments as approved with your form.

    If you plan to do research outside of those districts you may submit your form at any time. Please feel free to contact David Requa (drequa@illinois.edu) with any questions about this process and how we can help you get into the schools for your research.

  • I-Watch Training Session

    The University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) needs your assistance with crime prevention and reporting of suspicious and/or criminal activity within the campus area. As such, the Office of the Dean of Students is collaborating with UIPD to introduce members of the campus community—students, faculty, and staff—to the I-Watch program. I-Watch is a campus version of the Neighborhood Watch Program that exists in communities all across the country. In addition to receiving information on personal, home, and auto security, I-Watchers—the trained program participants—are given instruction in observation and reporting suspicious activity.     The University Library will transition to the Primo Library Catalog, a new online catalog system, on June 24, 2020. The new catalog system will have an enhanced single search interface so patrons can search for items in the university's Library Catalog simultaneously across all of the I-Share Libraries collections.
