If you have participated in a research project, be it through coursework, assisting faculty, research staff, or graduate students, or conducting a project of your own, you can become an Illinois Undergraduate Research Ambassador and help other students along their research journeys.  Ideal candidates should demonstrate at least one semester (or 1 full summer semester) of engagement in research/creative inquiry and exhibit excellent communication skills. • Inaugural Humanities Research Lab class in Spring 2021

  The Humanities Research Institute has collaborated with the Department of Anthropology and the Office of Undergraduate Research to pilot the Humanities Research Lab. Humanities Research Lab courses will emphasize humanities and interdisciplinary research methods and provide engaged research experiences for students at the gen ed level. This is a great course for students looking to learn about humanities research or scholarly research more broadly. The first offering is ANTH 126, available this spring.

  ANTH 126: Humans and Animals - Food or Friend? Emphasizes questions of how we can move toward a more sustainable future by focusing on two key realms of human relations with non-human animals: as food, and as “friend,” or pets/companion animals. A third category, of animals as “fauna” or avatars of the wild will be touched on briefly. Anchored in humanistic social science, this course also exposes students to the benefits and challenges of interdisciplinary thinking and research, and provides an opportunity for active experiential learning and pubic engagement. This course satisfies the General Education Criteria for Social/Behavioral Sciences. Meets online for Spring 2021, TR 11:00 AM – 12:20 PM, Professor Jane Desmond.

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Many of these languages can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors. This summer SILMW will take place from June 14 to August 7, 2021, and Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, and Wolof will be offered. The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters.   The Humanities Research Institute (HRI), with funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is looking for undergraduate interns to work with its Legal Humanities research group for the academic year 2021–22. Legal humanities understands the law as both reflecting and actively influencing societal values, aspirations, anxieties, biases, and notions of justice, examining how law constitutes and shapes the social world in which it is embedded. The HRI-Mellon Legal Humanities Research Group is composed of professors, post-doctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates from different disciplines who are united by their desire to understand the multiple ways the law, broadly conceived, shapes human relations to each other and the places we live.

  The research group seeks three undergraduate interns who will work with the group on their seminars, workshops, and programs. Interns will also work with the research group director to develop their own research projects as well as a research symposium for undergraduates at the end of the spring semester.   Undergraduate majors in humanities disciplines are invited to apply for a paid internship in Public Media and Civic Engagement sponsored by the Humanities Research Institute (HRI), the campus humanities hub, in partnership with Illinois Public Media (IPM), the public broadcasting service of the University of Illinois (your local NPR/PBS station).

  The successful candidate will be housed at IPM and will work under the supervision of the station’s news and public affairs director to produce 4–8 community listening sessions for news reporters. These listening sessions will assist reporters in understanding the aspirations of the communities we serve and the roadblocks to those aspirations. Information from these sessions will be shared throughout IPM and will assist in the creation of on-air and online programming.

  Students entering the CHP after Fall 2018 must participate in at least eight Scholar Adventurers Series (SAS) programs prior to graduation (approximately one per semester). For students who entered prior to Fall 2018, participation in four SAS programs is required.

  Graduating seniors and recent alumni:

  Do you want to get experience living and working in Asia? If so, you may be eligible to apply for the Luce Scholars Program (https://topscholars.illinois.edu/luce). The Luce is a one-year internship in your field after graduation in Asia or Southeast-Asia, and it is designed specifically for students and recent alumni who are U.S. citizens and who have spent less than 18 weeks in Asia since graduating from high school. For any candidate, even students who lived in Asia as a child or teenager, the Luce eligibility requirements would only count time in Asia since high school graduation toward the 18-week limit.

  Ganbaru, also known as gambaru, is a ubiquitous Japanese word which roughly means to slog on tenaciously through tough times. The word Ganbaru is often translated to mean "doing one’s best", but in practice, it means doing more than one's best. The word emphasizes "working with perseverance" or "toughing it out."

  Undergraduate majors in humanities disciplines are invited to apply for a paid internship in communications and undergraduate outreach at the Humanities Research Institute (HRI), the campus humanities hub. The successful candidate will assist HRI with its communications strategy, particularly its email communications and social-media presence, in addition to serving as HRI’s undergraduate liaison and chief strategist on undergraduate engagement. This position is funded thanks to a generous gift from David F. Prindable.

  To be considered for this internship, candidates must be humanities majors and possess strong writing and communications skills, excellent attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and an investigative mind. A broad interest in the humanities is preferred.

  The position commences October 23, 2020 and ends May 15, 2021. The Prindable intern will work approximately two to three hours per week, for 24 weeks, at the rate of $15.75 per hour (up to $1,000 per year). There is flexibility regarding the hours to be worked.

  The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections presents “‘Here I Have Lived’: Recreating the Land of Lincoln,” an exhibit about the history of Central Illinois’s two most prominent Lincoln heritage sites. Featuring materials related to the reconstruction of Lincoln’s New Salem near Petersburg and the restoration of the Lincoln Home area in Springfield, the exhibit offers a glimpse into how the places Abraham Lincoln called home in the Prairie State have been recreated after decades of changes to the natural and built environments.  Items on display include photographs, letters, booklets, postcards, architectural designs, sketches, and more, such as a rare woodcut print of the New Salem sawmill and an original souvenir brick from the Lincoln Home!

  The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is accepting submissions for the 2020 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS), set for Thursday, April 30, 2020. The URS is the signature event of Undergraduate Research Week (April 26 - May 2), and brings together students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus, as well as corporate partners and sponsors, to learn more about undergraduate research and its potential to change the world. Over the course of the day, students present their work in concurrent oral and poster presentations (including creative performances), the breadth and scope of which reflect not only the wide range of academic disciplines at the University of Illinois, but also speak to the caliber of our undergraduates.

  Park Ridge artist Rex Parker will present an original, illustrated program, “Frederic Goudy & H. G. Wells: The Time Traveler’s Typeface” from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15 in the Rare Book & Manuscript Library. This program explores a book publishing dream team: Frederic Goudy, “the titan of type,” and H. G. Wells, the “time-traveler novelist,” and their remarkable collaboration on The Door in the Wall — a collection of thrilling short stories and the creation of a timeless typeface.

  The UI Rare Book & Manuscript Library will exhibit rare editions printed on Goudy’s Village Press and William Morris’s Kelmscott Press. Also on display will be letters, manuscript and photographs from the University Library’s H. G. Wells Collection, the largest in the world.

  This event is free and open to all, and refreshments will be served.  The Rare Book & Manuscript Library is located at 346 Main Library, 1408 W. Gregory Dr., Urbana, IL.
