    The Students Pushing INnovation (SPIN) internship program was launched to provide University of Illinois undergraduates with the opportunity to participate in hands-on research and contribute to interdisciplinary projects covering focused research areas in Culture and Society, Earth and Environment, Bioinformatics and Health Sciences, Material and Manufacturing, Data and Computational Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, and Digital Agriculture.

  • Outreach Notice - Student Trainee Forester (Silviculture), Flathead National Forest (Kalispell, MT; respond by Sept. 28)

    The incumbent serves as an intern-forester in the silviculture programand is responsible for development and implementation of silvicultural prescriptions and stand diagnoses in support of the district program of work. This position will have conversion potential to the GS-09 level as a 0460 seriesForester. The Flathead National Forest currently has an active vegetation managementprogram intimber sales, fuels reduction projects, reforestation, young stand tending,and salvage sales. Thispositionispart of a forest-wide program; with primary responsibilities on the Tally Lake rangerdistrict butdepending on overall program prioritieswork may be forest-wide.

  • Native Lands Partnerships Research and Support Intern, The Wilderness Society (Remote)

    Under the supervision of Native Lands Partnerships (NLP) Director Starlyn Miller and in concert with other TWS staff, the intern will research NLP identified topics and provide briefing papers to inform TWS staff.  Some of the proposed topics include: Indigenous Knowledge, Food Sovereignty and Land Justice. 

    In addition, the NLP Intern would play an important role in supporting an inclusive organizational culture that is grounded in trust and accountability to shared goals and outcomes.  Under the supervision of Starlyn Miller, the intern would: 

    Assist in NLP intranet content development related to Native American Heritage Month (November 2022). Research and compile information about local and regional Indigenous-led organizations and leadership councils across the nation.Identify Indigenous-led organizations the serve women, youth and support the preservation of Indigenous cultural practices.Research and compile information on Indigenous led businesses as a resource for TWS staff.Assist in the development of TWS’s   annual on-line staff survey related to planned and ongoing Native Lands Partnerships work.

  • Wildlife Care Intern, Orange Beach, Alabama (Oct. 20, 2022)

    Come to the beach and live among the animals. The Orange Beach Wildlife Center (OBWC) is an organization that focuses on the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured, sick and orphaned wild animals.We are a growing facility so as interns you get to experience it all! Duties include but aren’t limited to:, triaging animals, administering medications and treatments, changing bandages, raising orphaned young, diet prep, feedings, answering hotline phone, record keeping, fecal checks, bloodwork, animal releases, daily cleaning of facility, enclosures and kennels, and capturing animals. We also do educational programs that interns will participate in. This will provide you an opportunity to expand on your knowledge base and gain valuable experience with the public in a high volume tourist area.

  • Department of Energy Undergraduate Internships (Summer 2023)

    Applications are currently being accepted for the Summer 2023 term of two undergraduate internship programs offered by the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science: the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program. The application deadline is January 10, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. EST.

    The Wildlife Society (TWS) has an opening for a paid wildlife policy intern with an interest in federal natural resource policy issues. This will be a six month appointment running from January-June 2023.

    Interpretive Naturalists are key members of the Dunes Learning Center team and are responsible for providingmeaningful experiences for children and adults regarding the diversity of ecosystems and cultural history of theIndiana Dunes all year long. They help students create connections, build confidence, and develop a sense ofplace by providing opportunities to explore, ask questions, reflect and work together as a team.Our Interpretive Naturalist Internship program provides an opportunity for next generation leaders to receivetraining and coaching to develop their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills andtechniques.   • Smithsonian Forest Ecology Internships (April-Oct. 2023), National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (Front Royal, VA; due Nov. 21)

    Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI; https://nationalzoo.si.edu/conservation) is offering five paid internships in forest ecology from spring to fall 2023. Interns will work on a team conducting the 2023 census of the Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) plot at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute outside of Front Royal, VA. Interns will be mentored by plot principal investigators Dr. William McShea & Dr. Kristina Anderson-Teixeira. The team will inventory all woody plants within a large (25.6 ha) forest dynamics plot, including species identification and mapping while helping to pioneer a new system of data collection and management techniques using tablets and a system of automated quality control. Interns will gain skills in forest ecology and data management and will be invited to coauthor at least one publication arising from the census. These internships are ideal for recent college graduates who wish to gain research experience prior to pursuing graduate studies or other forest-related career opportunities.

  • Barnum Conservation Policy Fellow. (Michigan United Conservation Clubs) (Lansing, Michigan)

    Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) is now accepting fellowship applications for the upcoming academic semester to serve as the Barnum Conservation Policy Fellow. MUCC is a non-profit member-based organization with more than 200 affiliated clubs and 40,000 members. Since 1937, MUCC has United Citizens to Conserve, Protect and Enhance Michigan’s Natural Resources and Preserve Our Outdoor Heritage through education, communication, and advocacy. The late Dean Oliver Barnum was a life member of MUCC, a lifelong hunter and conservationist, and a government professor. 

    Applicants can expect to gain diverse experience working for a non-profit entity that is fully dedicated to the conservation of Michigan’s natural resources and the enhancement and preservation of our recreational pastimes. Additionally, the MUCC Policy Fellow will be directly engaged in the day-to-day legislative, regulatory and media-related advocacy efforts of the organization. 

  • International Research Experience for Undergraduates (summer 2023), Plant Science for Global Food Security (Philippines; due Jan. 9)

    PSGFS is offering a six-week program made up of two components: three weeks of hands-on research, whereby students will work with IRRI scientists and their teams to evaluate diverse rice genetic materials; and three weeks of a training course called “Rice: Research to Production” (RR2P) in which PSGFS students will interact with other RR2P participants from around the world to learn about the basics of rice research and production and gain an appreciation for the challenges and rewards of international collaboration. RR2P includes socio-cultural trips (e.g., to the Banaue Rice Terraces) and activities in the field, greenhouses, and lab.

     

  • Summer 2023 Internship (6 positions), University of Idaho Franklin H. Pitkin Reforestation Nursery (Moscow, ID; due Dec. 31)

    • The forest nursery program at the University of Idaho was established in 1909, making it the oldest programs in the country.
    • Previous employees now work at prominent forest and native plant nurseries and are in high demand due to operational experience.
    • We are one of two university-run forest nurseries that grow seedlings for reforestation needs.
    • Interns will interact with and learn hands on skills from professional nursery staff with many years of operational experience.
    • $18/hour pay for 40 hours of work per week over the course of 10 weeks in the summer (May 29-August 4, 2023).
    • Housing will be provided.

     American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking 2 Fisheries Support Members to help with a variety of migratory fish studies and monitoring projects at the Connecticut River Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office located in Sunderland, Massachusetts. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a passion for natural resource management and an enthusiasm for fisheries management.

    During this 24-week term, the ACE member will work alongside US Fish and Wildlife staff on a number of projects ranging from fish population surveys, laboratory work, fish handling and equipment maintenance.

    Take a break from the ordinary and become an intern at the Eco-Justice Center. Spend three months to a year educating children about the environment, harvesting organically-grown vegetables, helping shear alpacas – the sky is the limit!   • Outreach Educator Internship (June 2023-May 2024), Dunes Learning Center (Chesterton, IN)

    The Outreach team delivers programs in local school classrooms, natural areas, and online, to provide meaningful STEM experiences to thousands of students in Northwest Indiana. They help students create connections, build confidence, and develop a sense of place by providing opportunities to explore, ask questions, reflect, and work together.

    Our Outreach Educator Internship provides an opportunity for next-generation leaders to receive training and coaching to develop their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills and techniques. Outreach Educators work both as a team and independently to lead a variety of programs to a wide audience in diverse settings, often working closely with public school systems and partners throughout the year. In the summer, the outreach team leads day-camps based at IndianaDunes National Park’s historic Chellberg Farm and assists with residential camps. Outreach Educator Interns have opportunities to extend their professional development through workshops, in-services, and networking.

    The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students and recent graduates to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

    The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation (BMWF) offers two different types of Wilderness Internships each summer: Wilderness Steward (WS) Internships and Wilderness Conservation Crew (WCC) Internships. Both are field based training programs for college and high school age students planning to pursue careers in natural resources and related fields. Interns gain valuable skills that build career opportunities in the Forest Service and non-profit partner field.

  • Community Service Officer (multiple positions for summer 2023), Wisconsin DNR (various locations in Wisconsin; due Feb. 13)

    Community Service Officers (CSOs) are responsible for supporting the DNR’s law enforcement, security, outreach and education efforts. These roles will serve in big cities and rural areas, on both DNR lands and in other public spaces. Serve the community and gain valuable experience.

  • Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Management Research Experience for Undergraduates (summer 2023 in Ohio; due Jan. 31)

    Participants will earn $6,000 over the course of the 10-week program. All other costs (including housing, meals, and travel) must be covered by participants.

  • Conservation Leadership Internship Program (summer 2023), Land Conservation of McHenry County (Woodstock, IL; due Feb. 27)

    CLIP is a paid summer internship that will provide underrepresented and BIPOC students/youth with hands-on professional training in the field of conservation. Participants will gain experience in areas such as Plant identification, Land management, GIS/GPS training, Prescribed fire training, Herbicide use, Rare plant monitoring, Wildlife/Stream surveys, Sustainable farming techniques, Land preservation techniques, Field safety, Scientific research/Experimental design, Art in the natural world, Career development and Professional networking. Collectively, these skills will give each participant a strong understanding of the field of conservation and serve as a springboard for a professional career in the field of conservation.

  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (summer) 2023 Directorate Fellows Program (remote or in person; due Jan. 13)

    Not only is this program a great way for undergraduate and graduate students to "try on" federal service through a paid internship, it comes with a direct hire benefit. Once students complete their degree program, they are eligible for direct conversion to a permanent federal position. 

    The variety of projects is pretty spectacular: from grizzly bear education/outreach to monitoring herbicide effects on threatened butterflies to integrating traditional ecological knowledge in developing habitat restoration models to mapping and developing resources related to post-Civil War African American tenant farming on a National Wildlife Refuge.
