  • Water Resources Internship Program (summer 2024), Iowa State University (Ames, IA; due Feb. 5)

    Have an interest in the environment, conservation, and agriculture, particularly water and soil quality?  We are seeking undergraduate student interns for summer 2024 who are self-motivated, detail-oriented, strong communicators, enthusiastic, and have a sense of fun! The Iowa State University water resources internship program serves as an outstanding springboard for careers in agriculture, engineering, the environment, and/or further studies.  

  • Student Trainee (Range Management) Intern, U.S. Forest Service (many vacancies in Western U.S.; due Feb. 21)

    The Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed. This Student Trainee position will be filled as an Intern appointment. The appointment is indefinite and is expected to last for the duration of the student's academic attendance.

  • Conservation Education Intern (summer 2024), Zoological Society of Milwaukee (Milwaukee, WI; due Mar. 1)

    The Zoological Society of Milwaukee's Conservation Education Department is pleased to provide a paid internship opportunity as part of our summer education (Zoo Camp) programs. This internship runs from the beginning of June until mid-August. Interns hired will help educate children ages 4-14 about science, animals, and conservation through interactive teaching strategies.  Successful candidates will assist instructors in classroom educational activities, lead Zoo tours, supervise and evaluate high school assistants (volunteers), prepare classroom materials, and other duties related to Zoo Camp as assigned. Interns will receive ongoing training and professional mentoring from Society Conservation Education staff and experienced Zoo Pride volunteers

  • Field Netting Technicians (2 positions in summer 2024), UIUC Human-Wildlife Interactions Lab (Kirksville, MO; due Feb. 8 for highest consideration))

    The Human-Wildlife Interactions Lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is recruiting two Field Netting Technicians to aid in an 11-week study of bats in the northern plains of Missouri.

  • Habitat Restoration Technician (summer 2024), Colorado State University - Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (Fort McCoy, WI; open until filled)

    The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University (CSU) will be hiring up to four seasonal Habitat Restoration Technicians to conduct fieldwork at Fort McCoy Military Installation, Wisconsin. Position duration is approximately end of May through end of August, 2024. Positions could be extended beyond projected dates pending hire availability and funding. Starting dates are flexible.

  • UTEP ROADS Post-Baccalaureate (one year research and mentoring), University of Texas at El Paso (El Paso, TX; due Mar. 1)

    Research opportunities and access for diverse scientists (ROADS) is an NSF-funded RaMP (Research and Mentoring for Postbaccalaureates) program that aims to provide the next generation of global change scientists with transformative research training and professional development - all while engaging them within a supportive academic network at the University of Texas at El Paso, which is a top tier minority-serving research institution (~80% Hispanic – reflecting the local population). 

    Applications for this immersive training program are open to recently graduated baccalaureate (post-bac) students who have received their degree within the past 4 years; or students who are completing their bachelors degree in Spring 2024 (Before May 30th 2024*). 

  • Seasonal Internship Program (summer 2024), Argonne National Laboratory (Lemont, IL; due March 1)

    Argonne’s Seasonal Internship program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research internships. Under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, students perform research on projects supporting the Department of Energy’s mission. Participants receive a stipend and on-site housing.

  • Multiple internships with housing provided (summer 2024), Vermont Center for Ecostudies (White River Junction, VT; due Feb. 29)

    Each year, VCE hosts a cohort of individuals early in their ecology careers to gain hands-on experience on research and conservation projects. We are offering three internship opportunities for the summer of 2024 (June 11th- August 16th) based out of our offices in White River Junction VT. Interns will be paid $15 an hour and housing will be provided. The internship application period will close at 5pm EST on February 29th. Applicants can apply to more than one internship.

  • REU Internship "Wetlands in a Modern World" (summer 2024), National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (East Alton, IL; due Feb. 16)

    In this summer program students will employ a modern integrative approach to wetland science that makes use of recent technological and theoretical developments across the geochemical, biological, and physical sciences. Students will conduct research at NGRREC’s state-of-the-art field station in Alton, IL and local field sights situated at the confluence of the Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers.

    The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has partnered with USDA to provide high-quality internship experiences for college students. Internship opportunities are available during Spring, Summer and Fall.   • Various Internship Positions (summer 2024), Wild Rivers Conservancy (Osceola, WI; due Feb. 9)

    Wild Rivers Conservancy interns support activities that give people opportunities to learn about and explore the Riverway, as well as protect and restore the watershed’s rare natural resources. These internship activities include assisting with K-12 environmental education programs and outdoor public programs to connect people to the Riverway and encourage stewardship, supporting land management by using GIS and other tools to develop snapshots of key habitat corridors and vital parcels of land for protection, working hand in hand with park rangers, creating opportunities for park visitors to understand the significance of the Riverway and its resources, monitoring and surveying water quality, aquatic invertebrates, zebra mussels, and bats, and educating the community on the spread of invasive species by connecting with people at landings and assisting with community-based invasive species awareness activities.

  • Naturalist Intern (seasonal), Missouri Department of Conservation (Cape Girardeau, MO; due Jan. 31)

    Job duties include, but are not limited to assisting with the development and presentation of scheduled programs, outdoor skills clinics, and special events on, and off, site, staffing the exhibit research lab and/or discovery station up to twice a month offering a hands-on activity and interacting with visitors, helping with the research, preparation, and staffing of a mix naturalist day camp programs for 7-11 year olds, 12-16 year olds, and multi-generational, and proposing, initiating, and completing an approved project (project scope will be decided between the intern naturalist and the nature center assistant manager based upon the needs of the facility and the skills and interests of the intern).

    Job duties include, but are not limited to conducting resource-related educational functions including but not limited to library programs, fishing clinics, pond and stream management workshops, field days, community stakeholder workshops, career days, and youth organization camps, assisting with the development of education materials and handouts for community partners: plans, grant applications, etc., working closely with Community Conservation Team and partners to help citizens identify valuable ways they can connect with fish, forest, and wildlife in their communities., and working with partners to integrate green space into the urban environment to provide equitable public access to nature.

  • Coastal Environmental Education Internship (summer 2024), BHI Conservancy (Bald Head Island, NC; due Jan. 14)

    The Bald Head Island Conservancy on Bald Head Island (BHI), NC, is seeking rising college juniors and seniors with outdoor and environmental education experience to join our nonprofit team dedicated to the conservation, education, and preservation of barrier islands. Duties are primarily leading outdoor educational programs, but will also include conservation field work and other responsibilities essential to the function of a nonprofit organization. Interns will live and work on an island only accessible by ferry with the main form of transportation being golf carts. 

  • Undergraduate Research Internships (summer 2024), Thomas More University (Crestview Hills, KY; due Feb. 9)

    The Thomas More University Biology Field Station, home of the Center for Ohio River Research & Education (CORRE), is offering 8 paid research internships for undergraduate students. These internships are in the fields of aquatic biology, conservation, ecology, and environmental science. Projects involve animal husbandry, bioassessments/biomonitoring, climate change, fisheries, harmful algal bloom monitoring and toxicology, among others.

    Time Period: Internships begin on June 1st and finish August 4th, 2024 with a break at the mid-point during the week of June 30th.

  • Seasonal Ecology Internships (3 positions in summer 2024), Martha's Vineyard Land Bank Commission (Edgartown, MA; due Feb. 5)

    The Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission is seeking three ecology interns for the 2024 summer season from May-October ($17/hr, 40-hour week). Start and end dates are flexible. The position supports the land bank’s ecologist and livestock manager with ecological surveys and the restoration grazing program on over 3000 acres of conservation land owned by the Land Bank.

  • LAKES REU Internship (summer 2024), University of Wisconsin-Stout (Menomonie, WI; due Feb. 1)

    The research focus of the LAKES REU program is in areas of sustainable watershed management, with aspects of social, economic, and environmental approaches incorporated into broader problems of sustainability and community. Students involved in the program will be mentored by faculty members having wide-ranging backgrounds in relevant research areas.

  • Openlands Arborist Registered Apprenticeship

    The Openlands Arborist Registered Apprenticeship 2024 cohort application will be available on Monday, January 8. They will be hosting a virtual, informational session on Monday December 18 at 6pm to provide interested applicants more information about the program, discuss the hiring timeline, and answer questions.

  • Community Service Officer (CSO) Summer 2024 Internships, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (various locations in WI; due Jan. 22)

    The WI DNR is hiring CSOs statewide for summer 2024 employment! CSOs are responsible for supporting the DNR’s law enforcement, security, outreach and education efforts. These roles will serve in big cities and rural areas, on both DNR lands and in other public spaces. Serve your community and gain valuable experience.

  • Conservation Land Management Program (summer 2024 start), Chicago Botanic Garden (various U.S. locations; interest form open)

    The Conservation and Land Management Program (CLM) at the Chicago Botanic Garden offers real-world experience to recent college graduates and young professionals interested in land management and conservation science.  

    Through a cooperative agreement with the US Forest Service, in 2024 the CLM program will hire and train interns to assist National Forests/Grasslands with their native plant materials development program, primarily through seed collection. These positions are really great for building plant identification and botanical expertise, navigation skills in the field, as well as networking opportunities and experience working at a federal agency.  

    These are 19-23-week paid positions.

  • Forest Nursery Internship (4 positions in summer 2024), University of Idaho Franklin H. Pitkin Reforestation Nursery (Moscow, ID; due Jan. 31)

    We are seeking 4 paid interns for summer 2024 to learn operational greenhouse forest seedling production for reforestation and forest restoration. Housing will be provided. Interns that complete this program will be highly competitive for forest nursery careers. 

  • Bureau of Land Management is Hiring 100 Student Interns for Summer 2024

  • NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program (summer 2024), Illinois Natural History Survey (Champaign, IL; due Feb. 5)

    The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program sponsored by the National Science Foundation supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the Foundation. The Illinois Natural History Survey (Prairie Research Institute) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking undergraduate students who want to be involved in an ongoing research project focused on the detection and characterization of phytoplasmas, a group of bacteria associated with insects (vectors, primarily Hemiptera) and plants (hosts) and implicated in plant disease.

    The focus of this project is to uncover the true diversity of phytoplasmas worldwide, reconstruct their evolutionary relationships, and document their associations with insects and plants by screening a large collection of insects preserved in a museum biorepository using modern DNA sequencing techniques and by revisioning large available literature.

  • REU Ecology in Human Dominated Landscapes (summer 2024), Miami University (Oxford, OH; apply by March 2024)

    The Miami University Research Experience for Undergrads (REU) program in Ecology and Environment is a summer research program supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Our program is an exciting opportunity for 9-12 undergraduate students to actively engage in a 10-week collaborative research project. 

    • Each student focuses on an independent research project.
    • Research opportunities are available in the lab or field (aquatic or terrestrial environments).
    • Small groups of students and mentors form clusters that meet regularly to discuss current literature related to their projects. 
    • The summer includes field trips, short courses on ethics and professions in ecology and environmental science, and seminars by guest speakers.
    • Participants interact with students from diverse backgrounds and make connections with faculty and graduate students as they learn about Ecology and Environmental Science as a career.
  • Bat Survey Field Technician (Hourly) (summer 2024), Illinois Natural History Survey (Champaign, IL; due Jan. 31)

    The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking 2 field technicians to assist with the 2024 summer field sampling for the Illinois Bat Conservation Program (IBCP), including acoustic surveys and mist netting. Technicians will generally work in teams of 2 to complete tasks which include communicating with landowners, deploying stationary bat acoustic recorders, driving mobile acoustic transects, and assisting with mist netting with the field team. Technicians will also be responsible for backing up, processing, and data entry of acoustic output.

  • Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Management Research Experience for Undergraduates (summer 2024 in Ohio; due Jan. 15)

    The Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Management Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program seeks to expand interest and enhance access to the fields of aquatic ecology and fisheries management.  

    Applicants do not need extensive experience in research or aquatic science to apply for and receive a spot in the program. We seek to enhance access to opportunities to conduct research in aquatic ecology or fisheries science for students from backgrounds that may have historically lacked connections to these fields.
