  • Opportunity for Those Going Abroad Next Semester

    Hello fellow Social Work students! I am in the process of creating a database as part of a post-abroad follow up assignment. The intent is to provide the DRES office with data regarding accessibility in various study abroad programs to encourage those with disabilities to seek out opportunities abroad. The ultimate goal of my project is to increase study abroad participation among students with disabilities on campus. This database will be a collection of study abroad programs and the types of accessibility offered in host countries. This will allow students with disabilities to access information when choosing a study abroad program to ensure that they identify an opportunity that is most supportive of their needs. If you are willing to collect this information during your time abroad, please reach out to me via email (provided below). This is not limited to Social Work students.  Anyone going abroad can participate, so if you have a friend in a different major that is studying abroad in the Spring of 2019, please pass this information along! This would be completely on your own time and not a huge commitment, being that you will have all semester to gather this info.  And you have the opportunity to support others in their study abroad experiences!  All you would be responsible for is noting your observations in an excel spreadsheet. (Accessible restaurants, bathrooms, stores, doors, means of transportation etc). If you are interested and looking for more info please do not hesitate to reach out!

  • Opportunity - Mats for Humanity

    Mats for Humanity is a large scale plarning event for APO brothers, alumni and other organizations on campus, in which we turn plastic bags into mats that will be donated to the homeless. These mats provide a cushion from the floor and the plastic keeps the bugs away!

    Come join us in this large scale plarning event and represent your RSO while doing some sustainable service! There will be facilitators to teach you how to plarn/crochet if you don't know how to!

    The Office of Volunteer Progams is holding a blood drive, and we need your help. 

     

    I am very pleased to announce that we’re partnering with the Community Blood Services of Illinois on January 23rd from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm to hold our own blood drive.

     

    Personally, I feel great pride in knowing that the Office of Volunteer Programs is becoming a part in what MVRBC does to strengthen our local community by providing safe and ready access to life-saving blood products. 

     

    38% of the population is eligible to donate blood. Fewer than 10% actually do.

     

    This is a problem. Every day, many Americans depend on blood donations from generous volunteer donors for critical components of their medical care…it is truly the most personal natural resource.

    This paid internship is in honor of 1949 Illinois graduate Barbara Seaquist Williams whose dedication to volunteerism inspired countless. This position provides the opportunity for a student to work with the Champaign-Urbana community and its ever-changing needs. The intern will engage in volunteer-related activities and organize office projects related to service, and the intern’s major and interest areas. The intern will network with professionals in the field and help develop a climate of community engagement on and off-campus. The intern will also learn skills in project management, managing team members, and administrative duties.

    The Office of Volunteer Programs (OVP) is hiring Undergrad Student Employees for spring 2018, with the potential to continue into the 2018–2019 academic year. OVP staff provide leadership and support for a range of events throughout the year, including MLK Service Day, Thanksgiving Basket Drive, Volunteer Fair, and numerous one-day and weekend service trips. In addition, OVP staff serve as an ongoing resource for students, registered student organizations, and community organizations; and positively represent OVP and the Illini Union in a variety of roles.

    REGISTRATION CLOSES THURSDAY, MARCH 15!

    Join OVP and iENGAGE on a one-day service and sightseeing trip to Indianapolis on Saturday, March 31st! In the morning we will be helping Keep Indianapolis Beautiful plant trees at Riverside Park. In the afternoon, we'll start sightseeing! Have a BBQ picnic. Tour the local zoo! Walk the Cultural Trail.  Visit the landmark Indy Catacombs.

    Selected Group Leaders must attend a pre-trip meeting on Thursday, March 29 from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm.  This meeting is mandatory.All trip participants must attend the pre-trip meeting on Thursday, March 29 from 5:00 to 6:00pm in Illini Union. This meeting is mandatory.Participants will depart from campus on Saturday, March 31st at 6:00 am (Indy is in a different time zone, so we lose an hour heading east), and return at 7:00 pm. You are invited to bring spending money to purchase additional items on the trip such as souvenirs from the zoo's gift shop.

    OVP Staff will lead a local service trip to Delight Flower Farm in Champaign, to help prepare for spring planting. Delight Flower Farm is an environmentally friendly flower farm providing our community with a local, chemical-free flower grower that helps aid in land and pollinator restoration.

    Meet at the Fish tank in the Illini Union by 8:00 am. Please arrive promptly.

    We will sign release forms at this time and have coffee and bagels before heading out to the farm

    In this workshop, “Parents, Peers, & Pressure: Finding Balance as Pre-Health Student,” we focus on strategies to help students manage pressure from well-meaning parents, fellow pre-health students, and even their own perfectionist tendencies.

    A brief presentation regarding the unique stressors faced by pre-health students on our campus and nationwide will be followed by a conversation around mental, emotional, and physical wellness featuring a panel of representatives from The Counseling Center, McKinley’s Wellness & Stress Management Educators, as well as current pre-health Illinois students.

  • Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship Opportunity for 1st year Freshmen

    Chapter 046 of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi will award a first-year undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign a $500 scholarship in recognition of past achievements and future academic potential. The award will be determined by an essay contest.

    First-year students are invited to submit a 500-word essay that answers the following question:

    Is the main purpose of a college education to prepare students for the workforce or to prepare them for lifelong learning?

    To be eligible for this award the student must:

    Be a full-time undergraduate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign who has earned less than 30 credit hours at any accredited university.

    Compose a 500-word essay on the topic specified above. Word limits will be strictly enforced.

    Essays should be single-spaced with 1” margins, 12-point type, on a standard 8.5”x 11” page layout.

    The essay will be judged on content and technical merit. Essays will be subjected to blind judging. Include your name and contact information on a separate coversheet, not on the essay itself.

    Completed essays and applications should be submitted to Amanda Houser (ahouser@illinois.edu) by March 6, 2017. The award recipient will be announced at the Phi Kappa Phi initiation ceremony in April 2017. Please contact Amanda if you have questions regarding the award or the essay criteria.

  • Poverty Simulation

    Of all Dr. King’s messages, one of his most prominent was the issue of poverty. The School of Social Work at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be hosting a poverty simulation to help local community members and students better understand the issues, hurdles, and roadblocks faced by those living in poverty.   • Pre-Health Ambassadors

    The Career Center is accepting applications for our new Pre-Health Ambassador program! The Pre-Health Ambassadors will assist the health profession advisors beginning in Spring 2019 with various events, while providing insight to students on what it is truly like to be Pre-Health at Illinois. Students must be pursuing a health profession (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant, vet med, nursing, etc.) and at least a sophomore. The application process will involve an interview and selected students must attend a mandatory training-date TBD.

  • Pre-Law Advising Updates

    Spring Registration. We encourage pre-law students to meet with their major/departmental advisor to discuss course selection. Due to our volume of appointments in October and November related to the law school application process, we are not able to individually meet with every pre-law student to discuss course selection. We encourage pre-law students to check our blog here, where we will post suggested (optional) course options next week. We have also posted general information on course selection both in the Pre-Law Handbook and over on our Compass page—which can each be accessed on our Pre-Law website. Thank you for helping us direct students to these resources.

    Grade Replacement. A new registration cycle means that students will be considering their grade replacement options. We’ve once again posted a guide to Grade Replacement and Law School on our blog here. Please feel free to refer to this or to share it with interested students.

    Applying to Law School Workshop—Monday, Oct. 16 at 4:00 pm in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. Designed for students who are currently in the application process, this workshop will provide an in-depth overview, including: Using the Credential Assembly Service, understanding each element of the application, making a timeline for perfecting the application, researching law schools, and creating a strategy for maximizing admissions and aid. Participants will leave with a detailed application plan, along with tips and suggestions on best application practices. The last 15 minutes will be set aside for Q&A so that individual questions can be addressed.

    Perfecting Your Personal Statement & Resume for Law School—Monday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 pm in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. The personal statement is one of the most difficult yet powerful elements of the law school application. Join us for this workshop, which will cover what the personal statement is, how to prepare for writing it, and some tips and suggestions for making it reflect an applicant's strengths. We will also discuss how the personal statement and resume can complement each other to create a stronger law school application. Each session is the same, so select the one that best suits your schedule. Please register here so that we can ensure enough seating and materials for everyone.

  • Prison-based volunteer opportunity, info session 2/6

    CAVE, which stands for Community Anti-Violence Education, is a democratically organized, peer-led counseling and education group initiated by men incarcerated at the Danville state prison in 2010 in order to help the neighborhoods from which they came, places devastated by violence, through spreading the knowledge and practice of trauma-informed practices. The group launched its outreach program in 2014, and since that time has worked with dozens of men at the prison, many of whom are now back home. Run by one of the program's alumni, a CAVE program is now operating at a re-entry facility in Chicago. In order to keep functioning at Danville, however, the program requires outside members to come in and contribute their time and heartfelt participation.

    Other than a willingness to listen and be reflective, NO SPECIAL CLINICAL EXPERTISE IS REQUIRED. The operational foundation of CAVE is a curriculum based on psychiatrist Sandra Bloom's Sanctuary Model (sanctuaryweb.com), and we frequently consult with Elena Quintana, a Chicago-based psychologist with a long history of facilitating conflict resolution and restorative justice in low-income communities and carceral institutions.

    CAVE is a program of the Education Justice Project (educationjustice.net), a unit of the College of Education at the University of Illinois, is an initiative that has since 2008 been teaching higher-level undergraduate courses and leading related programs at the nearby Danville state prison. Graduate students, community members, and faculty are encouraged to get involved with EJP's prison-based work.

    We will hold an information session on Tuesday, February 6, from 12:15-1:00 at the EJP community space in the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St., room 121-- just off of the first floor cafe area. All are welcome, and we'll have some light snacks. Flyer attached to this email. Feel free to bring your lunch!

    All EJP applicants should be at least 21 years of age. Applications for EJP programs, including CAVE, are all due on Thursday, March 1. We will hold interviews before or shortly after that date, as there is clearance paperwork to be immediately completed for accepted applicants, and then a semester or so of waiting to be cleared to enter the prison.

    What is the purpose of the Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board?

    The Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board was created in 2007 to provide feedback on programs, policies, and initiatives established or supervised by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. This year, the Board will be primarily concerned with aspects of the Student Success Initiative, which is designed to ensure the successful graduation of all Illinois undergraduate students.

    What do Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board members do?

    Board members will meet a few times each semester to share suggestions to strengthen the undergraduate student experience at Illinois. This year’s focus will be on challenges to and opportunities for student success on campus.

    What would be the time commitment?
    Your time commitment for this opportunity will include 2-5 meetings each semester that will last 1-2 hours.

Chancellor Jones noted the Student Success Initiative is an effort to better identify the factors that lead to positive and productive experiences for our undergraduate students. Last year we gathered valuable data from faculty, staff, and students! This year, our focus will be on using the data collected and recommendations to implement change on campus.

    We are seeking a diverse group of students to serve on our Provost Undergraduate Student Advisory Board.     We are once again seeking applications for the Provost’s Undergraduate Student Advisory Board. Please share the information with students who:

    Are undergraduates for the current year who will be on campus—not studying abroad or graduating early—both this fall and in Spring, 2018; Have a strong record of academic achievement as evidenced by a 3.0 GPA or above in their college courses or, for first-time new freshmen or transfer students, as evidenced by what you would consider a “very strong” high school or prior institution record; Are interested in academic affairs initiatives and activities on campus; Are involved in both academic and extracurricular activities here or, for first-time new freshmen or transfer students, were involved at their previous institution.

    Please be aware that a primary requirement for participation is availability during the set meeting times for the fall, no class or work conflicts. Though we certainly don’t expect you to vet this in the nominees, know that this will be the first question we ask any of them. Fall meeting dates are Wednesday, October 4; Friday, November 10; and Friday, December 8, all from noon to 1 p.m. with lunch provided.

  • Red Clover Reader

    Red Clover Reader is a U of I student-led early stage EdTech startup. Our team was finalist for the 2018 Cozad NVC and part of the current iVenture Accelerator cohort. We are a two-sided online marketplace that is addressing parents’ concerns surrounding poor quality screen time and lack of diversity in children’s literature. We collaborate with independent authors of children’s books to feature their work on our platform for use at home and in school. Our website is live with close to 100 books that can be read in full online and purchased in print.

    As our startup evolves, we look forward to collaborating with talented U of I students throughout the upcoming semesters to build a stronger platform. We're looking for creative team players studying (or with expertise in) software development, design, marketing, communications, journalism, creative writing, education, media or have a passion for kid’s literature. We’re also open to a longer term collaboration, such as the CTO and VP of Marketing positions we currently have available.

    A great opportunity to earn flexible technical or business class credits through TEC498 or BADM395, while gaining experience working with a startup! Compensation might also be with equity (on a vested schedule) as appropriate.

    Re:Search, the undergraduate literary criticism journal at the University of Illinois, is now accepting submissions and students from any major are encouraged to submit a proposal.  Please see below, and the attached .pdfs, for additional details.  This is a great way for undergraduates to get published!

    Re:Search is seeking submissions for the publication of our fifth issue in Spring 2018. Students from all majors and disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal, provided that the proposal engages in critical analysis of a form of text or media, such as novels, movies, TV shows, video games, graphic novels, and so on. Students accepted will be published in the hard copy of our Spring 2018 journal as well as in our online publication, which is searchable on Google Scholar.

    Information sessions for interested authors will be held on October 11th, location TBD.

    Submissions are due by 11:59pm on Friday, November 10th, 2017.
