  • Pre-Law Advising Updates

Spring Registration. We encourage pre-law students to meet with their major/departmental advisor to discuss course selection. Due to our volume of appointments in October and November related to the law school application process, we are not able to individually meet with every pre-law student to discuss course selection. We encourage pre-law students to check our blog here, where we will post suggested (optional) course options next week. We have also posted general information on course selection both in the Pre-Law Handbook and over on our Compass page—which can each be accessed on our Pre-Law website. Thank you for helping us direct students to these resources.

Grade Replacement. A new registration cycle means that students will be considering their grade replacement options. We’ve once again posted a guide to Grade Replacement and Law School on our blog here. Please feel free to refer to this or to share it with interested students.

Upcoming October pre-law programming: All fall events are listed on our calendar here

Participants will leave with a detailed application plan, along with tips and suggestions on best application practices. The last 15 minutes will be set aside for Q&A so that individual questions can be addressed.

Perfecting Your Personal Statement & Resume for Law School—Monday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 pm in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. The personal statement is one of the most difficult yet powerful elements of the law school application. Join us for this workshop, which will cover what the personal statement is, how to prepare for writing it, and some tips and suggestions for making it reflect an applicant's strengths. We will also discuss how the personal statement and resume can complement each other to create a stronger law school application. Each session is the same, so select the one that best suits your schedule. Please register here so that we can ensure enough seating and materials for everyone.

  • Hurricane Relief Effort at the School of Social Work

Nancy Perez-Flores is a student in the School of Social Work as well as a student member on the School's Diversity Committee. In my capacity as chair of the School's Diversity Committee, Nancy contacted me to ask about the possibility of a collection box for donations to help communities recently devastated by the hurricanes in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. I have asked Nancy to please proceed with setting up a donations box at our School.

Nancy is also a member of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A.). This group created "the #UIUCAyuda campaign to galvanize various organizations on campus to hold fundraising events and supply drives". From September 27th through October 21st, anyone who would like to make a monetary contribution can do so through the YouCaring relief organization. Donations can be made to the relief fund by clicking on the link to their webpage below:

    https://www.youcaring.com/relieforganizationsinmexicopuertoandthecaribbean-963473

Please consider contributing what you can to assist in this effort to bring relief to those struggling to cope with these devastating events.

Please help us assist the students by coming to our Silent Auction Fundraiser on November 1st at 6pm at the Bruce D Nesbitt African American Cultural Center. We will auction off authentic artwork, jewelry, and beadwork. All proceeds will go towards electricity for Kisiju Pwani Secondary School.

  • Survivor Day 2017

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is the one day a year when people who are affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities for support, information, and empowerment.

The event features a screening of The Journey: A Story of Healing and Hope, an AFSP produced documentary that traces the grief and healing journey that follows a suicide loss through the eyes of a diverse group of loss survivors. The film shows how those left behind navigate the aftermath of their loved one's suicide to find meaning and even joy, and takes an intimate look at how their healing journey evolves over time.

  • Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages have been designated by the United States government as critical to U.S. National Security and can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 10 to August 2, 2019, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters. This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned 10 credits (completing your language requirement), you will have had fun!

For more information, visit our website at https://linguistics.illinois.edu/languages/summer-institute-languages-muslim-world.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at silmw@illinois.edu or reach out to Brennan Dell (dell3@illinois.edu).  We hope to see you this summer!
