  • Ed tech scholar receives 2017 Jan Hawkins Award by AERA

    Curriculum & Instruction scholar Robb Lindgren was the April 29 recipient of the 2017 Jan Hawkins Award for Early Career Contributions for Humanistic Research and Scholarship in Learning Technologies, AERA Division C. Lindgren said the award is special to him because of Jan Hawkins’ collaboration with his doctoral adviser prior to Hawkins’ death.

    Winston C. Thompson is a Fellow in Residence at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and Assistant Professor (Education, Philosophy) at the University of New Hampshire. Professor Thompson's scholarship explores the ethical and political dimensions of educational policy and practice, including higher education access, affirmative action, and multiculturalism. His work on the nature of justice and the role of education in a pluralistic, democratic society has appeared in Educational Theory, Philosophy of Education, Teachers College Record, The Journal of Philosophy of Education, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and Studies in Philosophy and Education. He is working on a monograph entitled "Justice in the Balance: Revitalizing Politics and Education." He has also written on social media and is the creator of PIPEline (http://www.pipeline.fm/), a short-form interview podcast on contemporary research in philosophy of education.

  • Summer 2017 Course Announcement: EPSY 480 - Educational Statistics

    SUMMER 2017 COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
    EPSY 480: Educational Statistics
    Instructor: Dr. Youngshil Paek (ypaek2@illinois.edu)

    Educational Statistics is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students pursuing an introduction to educational/behavioral statistics. The course aims to help students develop basic understanding and interpretation of statistics in education or the behavioral/social science literatures.  The course will cover descriptive statistics such as graphical representation of data, central tendency, variability, and correlation as well as inferential statistics such as hypothesis testing of means, regression, and goodness-of-fit testing.

    This is an exclusively online course, with no official lecture time. The course runs this summer from June 12 – August 3. The course will include unit quizzes, a semester project applying the course concepts to a data set, and a final exam.

  • Tap In organization accepting articles and content for magazine

    Tap In Leadership Academy (Tap In) is a nonprofit academic enrichment organization. Tap In has a mission to enhance educational achievement, support leadership development and captivate cultural awareness for children and families upon graduation. Tap In is currently looking for research based articles on educational topics to publish in our quarterly magazine. Desired articles should be less than 3000 words; however, submissions of any length will be considered. Submissions must be original and unpublished.   • Assistant director of online programs to serve as moderator at retreat

    Dr. Mila Thomas Fuller, assistant director of online programs at the College of Education and president of the board of directors for the International Society for Technology in Education, will serve as guest moderator for a breakout session at the June 16 All-Staff Retreat for Minority Recruitment and Retention.

  • Funding to forge collaboration between Special Education and Birmingham scholars

    The Birmingham-Illinois Partnership Discovery, Engagement and Education (BRIDGE) initiative has funded a project that will forge a partnership between the Department of Special Education and the Department of Disability Inclusion and Special Needs at the University of Birmingham.

  • Alumna named principal of Nationally Honored Arcadia Elementary School

    Stephanie Newman Healy ’02 C&I has been appointed principal of Arcadia Elementary School, which was named a Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Office of Education in recognition of its ranking among the top 10 percent of Illinois schools.

  • Education scholars collaborating on WHO immunization project

    Education at Illinois scholars Bill Cope and Mary Kalantzis are working with The Geneva Learning Foundation and the World Health Organization on conducting a high-quality, statistically robust vaccination-coverage survey, which will focus on disease control in developing countries.

    Special Education scholar Maya Israel will be the principal investigator of a National Science Foundation-funded project that focuses on progressions in how students should learn computational thinking within the context of elementary mathematics.

    Course Description:This 400-level social foundations course is a combined graduate- and advanced undergraduate-level (juniors and seniors) sociological examination of education and schooling in society. The course will examine major sociological theories, research studies, questions, and issues in the sociology of education. A spotlight of the course is student and teacher activism in society and in education. Among other things, we examine the education impact and legacies of diverse 1960s/1970s movements led by New Left students (such as Mario Savio in the Free Speech Movement), teachers (such as literacy pioneer Septima Poinsettia Clark in the civil rights movement), hippies/flower children, Vietnam anti-war activists, women, people with disabilities, European Americans, African-Americans, Latinos/as, Asian/Pacific Americans, Native Americans, LGBTQ+, welfare recipients and anti-poverty activists, language minorities, immigrants, migrant farm workers, and others who protested in and outside of classrooms, schools, and colleges/universities.

    About the Professor: Professor Barnett earned her Ph.D. in Sociology. She is an historical sociologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Policy, Organization, & Leadership (EPOL), Department of Sociology, and Department of Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has presented research on the 1960s and social movements at international forums in the U. S., Canada, and Germany and has received various awards, including the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, Advising, and Research by the Council of Graduate Student in Education and Incomplete List of Teachers Ranked Excellent by Students at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.   • EPOL professor to be inducted into IACE Hall of Fame

    Professor Peter Kuchinke of the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership will be inducted into the 2017 International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame, located in the Thurman J. White Forum building at the University of Oklahoma.

  • SOAR after-school program now recruiting tutors for Fall 17

    SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources is a partnership between the University of Illinois and the International Prep Academy (IPA) in Champaign. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. 

    Tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15, with time for reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the children. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District the third week of classes. 

    U of I students who would like to tutor with SOAR need to commit by September 11.

  • Critical Voices in Critical Times: Fanon, race & politics - an interview with Mireille Fanon-Mendès France (part 1 of 2)

    Professor Linda Herrera of the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership has a regular column in the open global media platform, openDemocracy, "Critical Voices in Critical Times." Her second column is an interview with the activist - daughter of Frantz Fanon, Mireille Fanon-Mendès France. In part one of their interview, which is accompanied by a video, they talk about the enduring relevance of Fanon, the state of contemporary politics, the need for the decolonization in Africa, and struggles for emancipation in our age of globalization.

  • Center for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment holding Fourth International Conference

    September 27-29, 2017 in Chicago

    Heightened community unrest sparked by the death of unarmed citizens; disproportionate inequities in education, poverty, health care, and rates of incarceration; and an intensely divisive U.S. presidential election require even more vigilant attention from our global CREA community. It is critically important that we focus on the generation, analysis, and usage of substantive evidence “that matters” in the evaluations and assessments we undertake. To address the issues our communities face, we are compelled and responsible to raise questions about what is being done to correct inequities and aggressively translate this evidence into action that has meaningful impact on our collective future. 

    Therefore the Evidence Matters: Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment Translating to Action and Impact in Challenging Times   will focus on the following areas:

    - Program evaluation, measurement and assessment as sources of evidence

    - Challenging the status quo regarding whose evidence matters. Cultural responsiveness as foundational to more equitable public policy

    - Moving from evidence generation to advocacy and action. Policies and practices of influence and consequence in the quest for social justice

  • EJP receives 2017 Community Impact Award

    The Education Justice Project (EJP) was announced as a co-recipient of the Community Impact Award from the C-U Immigration Forum and the Urbana Free Library. The award will be presented to the organization at the fourth annual Immigrant Welcome Award Ceremony and Celebration on Sept. 23.

  • University Primary School open house happening Oct. 19

    University Primary School, the lab school of the College of Education at Illinois, is hosting an annual open house for the community on Thursday, October 19, 2017. Prospective families, researchers, and community members may see the preschool class from 9:00 a.m. until noon and kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The School is located in the Children's Research Center at 51 Gerty Drive, Champaign.   • Critical voices in critical times: Fanon, race & politics - a part-two interview with Mireille Fanon-Mendès France

    In Part 2 of Professor Linda Herrera's timely interview with Mireille Fanon-Mendès France, she asks about the post-2011 migrant issue in Europe. This topic bursts open a rich discussion about the politics of race, parallels between Muslims in France and African-Americans in the U.S., Black Lives Matter, and the need for critical education and more concrete forms of global solidarity.

    The Course Development Fund (CDF) is being established at the College of Education to support mission-driven investments in curricula as well as teaching activities and innovations. 

  • Free book jacket and poster giveaway

    The Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library (100 Main Library) will host its annual giveaway of free posters, book jackets, and tote bags November 6-10 during all hours that SSHEL is open.

    The fun begins in the School Collection Room (Room 112) at 9 am on Monday, November 6th. 

    Posters and book jackets are great resources for:

    We will be giving posters and book jackets away until they are all gone.

    The College of Education O'Leary Learning Center is seeking up to 10 interdisciplinary student projects interested in using the Center’s collaborative space beginning Spring 2018. These projects will showcase the kind of interdisciplinary collaborative research that will take place in the Center. Selected projects will receive $1,000 of funding support.

  • NSF-funded FLIP (Diversifying Future Leadership in the Professoriate) Alliance

    The goal of the NSF-funded FLIP (Diversifying Future Leadership in the Professoriate) Alliance is to address the broadening participation challenge of increasing the diversity of the future leadership in the professoriate in computing at research universities as a way to achieve diversity across the field. 

    Dr. Stafford Hood and Dr. Denice Hood at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign will be the  senior personnel to oversee the evaluation and assessment. The FLIP Alliance will focus on strategic dimensions for scaling the effective programs.
