  • Local Schools Research Form Deadline

    If you want to do research in Champaign, Urbana, Danville or Decatur this semester, you must have your School Research Form completed and submitted by February 11, 2015.You should have IRB approval before submitting that form and be prepared to upload the form, approval letter, consents and instruments as approved with your form.

    If you plan to do research outside of those districts you may submit your form at any time. Please feel free to contact David Requa (drequa@illinois.edu) with any questions about this process and how we can help you get into the schools for your research.

  • I-Watch Training Session

    The University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) needs your assistance with crime prevention and reporting of suspicious and/or criminal activity within the campus area. As such, the Office of the Dean of Students is collaborating with UIPD to introduce members of the campus community—students, faculty, and staff—to the I-Watch program. I-Watch is a campus version of the Neighborhood Watch Program that exists in communities all across the country. In addition to receiving information on personal, home, and auto security, I-Watchers—the trained program participants—are given instruction in observation and reporting suspicious activity.   • Ethnography of the University Initiative research journal accepting submissions

    The Ethnography of the University Initiative at Illinois is excited to announce the fourth volume of its undergraduate research journal, Peer Review: The Undergraduate Research Journal. This is an open-access, digital journal published annually, which may be of particular interest to undergraduate students and faculty mentors. Submissions are being accepted for the May issue.

    The University Library will transition to the Primo Library Catalog, a new online catalog system, on June 24, 2020. The new catalog system will have an enhanced single search interface so patrons can search for items in the university's Library Catalog simultaneously across all of the I-Share Libraries collections.

  • User Services - Special Hours for August

    Starting Monday, August 10th, User Services will be open from 8am to 4pm until August 21st. We will hold special office hours on Sunday, August 23rd, that will be announced later in the month. Regular semester hours will begin with the first day of classes.

    "I Feel, Therefore I Am: A Look at Social-Emotional Development in Tajikistan"

    In this presentation I will discuss recent research I have been doing in Tajikistan in collaboration with the Aga Kahn Foundation. In particular, I will describe the process we used to determine the cultural and contextual relevance of existing social-emotional measures and discuss the development of a new measure for use in rural Tajik communities. Additionally, I will summarize findings from a preliminary study of the impacts of Early Childhood Education on children’s language, mathematics and social skill development and highlight how these findings informed an ongoing longitudinal impact study in Tajikistan. Finally, I will illustrate how we have taken this research and are using it to create sustainable practice in Tajik schools in an attempt to improve classroom quality across early childhood.

    Cuban librarian Marta Terry González visit to campus may be of interest for C&I -  Language and Literacy students. There are a couple of sections about literacy and digital age: Ex: On Wednesday, October 14, Terry will deliver a talk titled, “Dialogue with a Veteran Cuban Librarian: The Long View on Literacy, Literary Culture, Digitization and Revolution,” as part of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Lecture Series.   • Urbana Elementary Schools Seeking Classroom Volunteers

    Yankee Ridge Elementary School in Urbana is looking for volunteers, either with some French background or not. Volunteers are needed in 4th and 5th grade classes from 12:50pm-1:50pm and in the 1st grade class from noon-1pm. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in the classroom, particularly in a dual language environment.     SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources is a partnership between the University of Illinois and the International Prep Academy (IPA) in Champaign. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. The program is part of a growing national trend for dual language instruction in schools. Instruction in two languages has value for both emergent bilinguals and those fluent in English. The goal of dual language instruction is to promote positive cross-cultural understanding, bilingualism and biliteracy at a time when knowledge of language and culture confers power. SOAR is one of several programs available through the Center for Education in Small Urban Communities. The Center is an outreach arm in the College of Education. 

    Opportunities for U of I students include:

    One-to-One Tutoring. SOAR tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15, with time for reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the children. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District the third week of classes. The SOAR program coordinator will provide the clearance form for the tutors. This opportunity is especially interesting to Illinois students who want to gain cross-cultural awareness and relationship skills.

    U of I students who would like to tutor with SOAR need to commit by January 29.

    Accurate Biometrics will visit the College of Education, Room 333, on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 between 10 a.m. and noon to administer fingerprint criminal background checks.

    This on-site background check is available to school researchers ONLY. Students in teacher education programs needing background checks for the Council on Teacher Education (CoTE) must make individual appointments at the Accurate Biometrics location of their choice.

  • NILOA releases its third national survey of institutional assessment practices

    Following up to its 2009 and 2013 surveys of chief academic officers, the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) continues to provide a landscape of current approaches and practices related to assessing student learning unfolding on college and university campuses. To take a snapshot of institution-level assessment in 2017 and trends over time, Director Natasha Jankowski and the NILOA team conducted its third nationwide survey of provosts between April and September 2017. This report summarizes the major findings and presents implications for policy and practice. Watch a video discussing the report here.

    Biography: Jana Sebestik is the Assistant Director for STEM Curriculum Design in the Office for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (MSTE) in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She coordinates TCIPG education efforts to develop a variety of educational opportunities designed to engage learners of all ages. She is the author of the 4-H SET curriculum “The Power of the Wind.” She taught in the Urbana School District for 34 years before coming to MSTE.

    The Military Families Learning Network, a grant project within the Special Education department, will host a series of free webinars in 2019.   • Alumnus Freeman Hrabowski receives national lifetime achievement award

    Freeman A. Hrabowski III, Ph.D. 75 Ed., the nationally known president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, has earned a prestigious lifetime achievement award from a higher education organization.

    The American Council on Education will present the award—which is not given every year—to Hrabowski at its annual meeting next week.

  • Database Trial: APA's PsycEXTRA

    The Library is offering a trial of a database that includes “grey literature” resources in the social and behavioral sciences. PsycEXTRA is an APA database that compiles what is known as grey literature, materials that go beyond traditional peer-reviewed research material. It includes resources such as conference materials, factsheets, reports, standards/guidelines, and other hard-to-find content.

    The trial is available until April 24. If it gets a lot of use and we receive positive feedback, we will consider subscribing to it. Please spread the word about the trial if you are interested, and feedback is welcome. Thank you!

    H.M. Kuneyl, a third-year doctoral student in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, recently shared her thoughts in an Open Campus article about the distinct but incomplete history of historically black community colleges (HBCCs), institutions she focuses on in her research. Kuneyl is a research assistant at the Office of Community College Research and Leadership.

    Course Description:

    This course offers students the opportunity to acquiring skills for developing and implementing training/development, research, or community outreach projects in any organization. These are key skills because it is estimated that as much as 50% of the work that you will do in an organization will be done as a project. This course also provides best practices and principles related to the management of projects in educational organizations (all levels, traditional or online), emphasis on team building and leadership, establishing relationships, benchmarks and evaluative practices, and review and use of various project management tools.
