Interns work directly with staff attorneys, editors, scientists, and economists on a variety of projects.     In partnership with Illinois USDA-NRCS, the Champaign County Soil & Water Conservation District (CCSWCD) is hiring anNRCS Survey Aide that will serve in Champaign and Vermilion counties, Illinois. The Survey Aide will work closely withthe CCSWCD and NRCS personnel to help landowners and producers implement conservation practices.

  • Wildlife Technician - Wetlands and Waterbirds (May 15 start), Illinois Natural History Survey (Havana, IL; open until filled)

    The Forbes Biological Station is seeking two research technicians to assist with multiplestudies assessing wetland and waterbird ecology along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. Thesepositions will include a mix of field and lab work. Primary field duties will include marshbird nestsearching/monitoring and waterfowl trapping. Primary lab work will be processing automatedrecording unit (ARU) data of hunting disturbance.   • Restoration Technician (summer 2023), The Nature Conservancy Nachusa Grasslands (Franklin Grove, IL; due Feb. 28)

    Restoration Technicians will help manage and restore tallgrass prairie at Nachusa Grasslands, a 4,000 acre preserve near Dixon, IL. Technicians will work together on a crew to remove invasive weeds and hand-collect native seeds. Seeds are used to restore agricultural lands back to high diversity prairie, wetlands, and savanna on site annually. These are great opportunities to learn about plants and animals and natural areas management with an emphasis on ecological restoration. The position affords the opportunity to engage in interesting, educational, and challenging outside work at a dynamic restoration project. This is an exceptional entry level position to learn what it really takes to do natural areas management and restoration. Full-time job, short-term position starting early May and ending early August with possible extension through fall. $14/hr. Includes nice, clean on-site housing (one technician per room), high speed internet available at Headquarters. No pets.

  • Aquatic Field Technician (Hourly) (summer 2023), Illinois Natural History Survey (Macomb, IL; open until filled)

    INHS is seeking field technicians (1-3) to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois, focusing on the Mississippi River. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data with additional targeted data collection and lab sample processing. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be based in Macomb, Illinois.

  • Freshwater Mussel Research Technician (summer2023), University of Missouri (Columbia, MO; due Feb. 24)

    Technicians (2) will assist a MU PhD student, Missouri Department ofConservation staff, and National Park Service staff with aquatic freshwater mussel conservationresearch. Surveys will occur in the Current River and Jacks Fork River within the Ozark NationalScenic Riverways located in southeast Missouri. Overnight travel will be required (hotelaccommodations, meal per diem, and transportation will be provided). Motorized and non-motorizedwatercraft will be used to access survey sites. Position based in Columbia, Missouri.

  • Fisheries Student Research Technician (Hourly) (summer 2023), Dept. of NRES (Champaign, IL; due Mar. 24)

    A fisheries research technician is needed to conduct applied research to gather answers to questions related to how competitive angling events impact individual largemouth bass, as well as largemouth bass population. The primary duties of this position will require the technician to work closely to assist a graduate student on a number of research projects designed to quantify the impacts of tournaments on bass, including field work to deploy telemetry equipment to track fish movements, field work to quantify how different holding conditions can impact bass, as well as assisting with laboratory simulations of angling tournament conditions. Work will occur in the field (Boat or marina at field sites), at the University of Illinois PondResearch Site on S. Lincoln Ave., or in a shared laboratory on campus. The position will be flexible with up to 40 hours a week based in Champaign, Illinois with frequent travel to Clinton Lake and Newton Lake. Weekend work is sporadic but necessary to monitor fishing tournaments that only happen on weekends. The technician may have the opportunity to develop their own project from the data collected

    The Amphibian Research Intern will work under the supervision of Dr. Sinlan Poo. The intern will learn a variety of field and laboratory techniques, such as visual encounter surveys, field sampling, night surveys, amphibian husbandry, captive breeding, amphibian development, morphology assessments, and parasite identification. Interns will learn about research design and the scientific method, and will have the opportunity to interact with researchers and external collaborators from Arkansas State University.     INHS is seeking to hire a Forest Ecologist to plan, monitor, and evaluate the forestry-associated Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP) and Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) across the state of Illinois, in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Forestry Resources. This position will be based out of the IDNR Forestry District Offices in either Sparta, Illinois or Jerseyville, Illinois.

    The employee will coordinate field and lab work associated with two projects exploringplant and soil traits that enhance ecosystem services (nutrient use efficiency, carbonsequestration, greenhouse gas emissions reductions and, productivity) and oversee laband field measurements in our on-campus organic systems trial and on-farms.     We are hiring two technicians to collect field data at sites within the Hoosier NationalForest in southern Indiana as part of a collaborative study between the Department ofForestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University and the USDA Forest Service. Basicknowledge of proper field techniques and backcountry safety are required. Applicantsmust possess a valid driver’s license.

  • Technical Positions in Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Ecology, The Ohio State University (Columbus, OH; due Mar. 3)

    Up to two full-time technician positions are available to assist on a on a field- andlaboratory- based research project that is designed to help the Ohio Division of Wildlife understandthe cause of reduced yellow perch angling success in western Lake Erie. This project requiresextensive field sampling during summer (June-October) for adult yellow perch, zooplankton, andhabitat on Lake Erie. Laboratory and computer work (e.g., zooplankton counting, diet processing,data entry and plotting) will occur when not in the field. One of the two incumbents will serve as thehead technician of the project. Opportunities to help with data analysis, manuscript writing, and/orstudent mentorship may exist, depending on the incumbent’s experience.

    We are hiring a technician to assist in collecting field data in Indiana forests for a research project being conducted by the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources at Purdue University. The technician will work alongside two graduate students collecting vegetation data to determine the effectiveness of invasive plant control treatments funded by federal cost-share programs. Applicant must have a valid driver’s license. Position will be based in West Lafayette, Indiana, but will work throughout the state of Indiana. Multiday travel will be required.

  • Field Technician (tree data; summer 2023), Purdue University (Indiana; due Mar. 15)

    We are hiring one technician to assist in collecting fielddata at state parks in Indiana. This is a collaborativeproject between Purdue University and the HardwoodTree Improvement & Regeneration Center (HTIRC). Thetechnician will work alongside a graduate student toassess the regeneration characteristics of areas with andwithout ash in the overstory. Eight state parks will bevisited to resample plots established in 1996/97 andremeasured in 2010/11. In addition to biological data, thefield crew will collect site physiographic data and canopycover estimates using fisheye photography. We’re hiring for a full-time Soil & Water Conservation Specialist. Successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree in Resource Management, Soil Science, Watershed Management, or another natural resource-related field.   • Seasonal Aquatic Field Technician (Hourly) (mussel research; summer 2023), Illinois Natural History Survey (Champaign, IL; due Mar. 17)

    We are seeking up to three (3) field technicians to assist with mussel research for the summer and early fall of 2023. Duties include collecting mussels by hand sampling, snorkeling, and quantitative sampling along transect lines; setting and maintaining water quality collection devices; and collecting eDNA samples. Other work may include collecting fish by dip-netting, seining, and trawling, as well as back-pack, barge and boat electrofishing; lab and museum work, data entry, processing specimens for curation, museum maintenance; equipment cleaning and maintenance; and other duties as needed. Travel is expected, and overnight travel with 2–3-hour travel time to research sites should be expected during some work weeks. Workdays may consist of long hours outdoors or inside a lab.

    The Illinois Natural History Survey (a division of the Prairie Research Institute of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant (Ph.D.). In collaboration with researchers from Purdue University and the Shedd Aquarium, we are developing hydroacoustic array in the area with an intent to answer several questions important to fisheries management.
