  • Health Application Prep Month!

The Career Center will be hosting two workshops on the Overview of the Health Profession Application Process and one Personal Statement Workshop, presented by the Writers Workshop (see dates/times on image below). On Sunday, April 22, we will be offering an Application Bootcamp. At the Bootcamp, the Health Professions team will go over the details of the application services, how students determine where to apply and the steps to take after they submit their applications.

These programs/workshops are best suited for students who will be applying to any type of health profession program (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Podiatry, SLP/AuD., Vet Med, Public Health, Nursing, Physician Assistant, etc.) for the 2018-2019 application cycle.

In the month of May, we will also be offering Application Work Groups. Students have the opportunity to sit down with a health profession advisor and ask questions about their application. Please note that this is not a personal statement review session. The work groups will take place at The Career Center Interview Suite (616 E Green St, Rm 213-between McDonalds and Subway, under the Kaplan sign) and be offered on:

    May 14 from 3-5 pm
    May 17 from 3-5 pm
    May 20 from 2-4 pm

Students can utilize our Personal Statement Review Service at: https://www.careercenter.illinois.edu/service/personal-statement-reviews. Mock Interviews are also available to pre-health students, https://www.careercenter.illinois.edu/service/mock-interviews.

  • Health Professions Wednesday-Feb 8

On February 8, The Career Center will be starting their Health Professions Wednesdays Series for the spring semester. The first HPW is titled, Helping Professions: Beyond the Medical Model. They chose this topic because they meet with students who want to work in health fields and “help” people, but might not be aware of other professions besides physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, etc. Or students have shadowed specific fields and realized they do not like some of the responsibilities.

They will be having a panel of four professionals from the following fields: Social Work, Child Life Specialist, Dietetics and Genetic Counseling.

It is scheduled for February 8 at 4:00 pm and will take place in The Career Center Interview Suite at 616 E Green Street, Room 213.

  • Help us plan Earth Day 2020 activities!

2020 will mark Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, 20 million Americans have volunteered in the planet’s largest civic event leading to the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States such as the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts (Earthday.org). Despite these past successes, today, we face greater environmental challenges that need action at all levels of society. Solving the environmental crises requires multidisciplinary perspectives and applications. Social work discipline endeavors to address injustices for all people and now we recognize that the natural environment is a crucial element in securing justice for current and future generations (Erickson, 2018). The purpose of this committee is to educate and mobilize social work students to grow and support environmental activists through participation in Earth Day 2020. The committee will develop and lead UIUC School of Social Work Earth Day activities.

If you are interested in serving on the committee, please complete the survey at https://uiucsocialwork.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bHjiK8gXB6tCuMt by Friday, 10/18.

  • Human Library event September 27th

The Human Library is an event where individuals volunteer to be ‘books’ and share their stories with others. These individuals often have identities that are marginalized, stigmatized, or stereotyped. Examples of some of these identities can be found on our website: http://humanlibrarycu.org/meet-our-books/. We’ve gotten great feedback from the community as well as the volunteers, and hope to include more students at future events.

The event itself will be during the Pygmalion Festival on Thursday, September 27th in the lobby of the Krannert Center for Performing Arts. It will run from 5:30-9pm.

  • Illinois Student Government Campus Committee Applications

ISG is devoted, especially in these virtual times, to campus connections between students and administrators. With that said, it’s that time of year again for students to apply to Campus Committees. Campus Committees are committees run by the Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs, which touch all areas of campus life, including cultural centers, student fees, and much more! Being involved in a Campus Committee allows students an unparalleled opportunity to shape the Illinois experience, represent the student body, and have their ideas heard. Even for students who may have no interest in student governance per se, Campus Committees are a fantastic way to impact their experience at the University of Illinois directly.

For more information about Campus Committees, please visit here. Students can find the application on the Illinois Student Government website or by clicking here. Please note that all application submissions are due on October 23rd. In the meantime, however, please feel free to contact Chief of Staff Katrina Rbeiz at isg-chiefofstaff@illinois.edu with any questions, comments, or concerns!

    Best Regards,

Tyler Gadbury Deputy Chief of Staff

  • Illinois Student Government Student Vacancy

The Senate of the Illinois Student Government is the core of the student government. It is made up of 54 Senators from each college or equivalent unit. The seats are apportioned to the colleges by enrollment size. For example, the largest college, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, has 14 senators, and the smallest college, Education, has one. Graduate students are also members of the Senate, and are elected either from the Graduate College, the College of Law, or the College of Veterinary Medicine. To become a Senator, a student must either win their college’s seat in the Academic Senate during the Spring semester, or fill a vacant seat in the Senate of the ISG. Senators work to pass resolutions to help benefit the student body. Consider applying to be a senator here: https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/216909
