  • Up With Life Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk

    Up With Life, a student organization dedicated to suicide prevention and awareness on U of I's campus and in the greater community, is having its first annual walk on April 30th to raise money for NoStigmas, a nonprofit that provides free support and resources for those struggling with mental illness.

  • Updates from Pre-Law Advising Services!

    Pre-law programming for the semester is now underway!  The online PLAS Calendar contains the most current information about upcoming events and will be updated throughout the semester as new programming is added. Below is a highlight of three of our fall workshop series for students applying to law school and those with a general interest in law.   

    Pre-Law 101 Workshops (Designed for anyone interested in law school from freshman to alumni.  Students are asked to participate in one of our Pre-Law 101 workshops prior to scheduling a general advising session.)

    Fall sessions will be held on the following dates: September 15, October 1, October 27, and November 12. Register online to attend.       

    Application Roadmap: Navigating Your Fall 2020 Applications (Designed for students or alumni applying during the 2020-2021 academic year or considering a gap year.  Topics will include a detailed overview of the entire process pre-application through post-application, suggested timeline, and resources and strategies to optimize success.)  

    Fall sessions will be held on the following dates: September 3, September 22. Register online to attend.  

    Application Excellence: A Guide to Perfecting Your Law School Application (Designed for students or alumni applying during the 2020-2021 academic year.  Topics will include specific guidance on elements of the application, including: resumes, personal statements, letters of recommendation, and addendums.)  

    Fall sessions will be held on the following dates:  September 9, September 29, October 29, and November 17, 2020.  Register online to attend.

    Join us on Thursday, 9/18, 12:00 - 12:50 and 4:00 - 4:50 pm in Room 2015 for our first Financial Wellness Brown Bag Series. This session will introduce students to CASHCOURSE, an online financial literacy resource for college students.

    Join us on Monday, 9/23, 12:00 - 12:50 pm to learn about the Wesley Food Pantry, a campus-based program that offers support to students. We will meet in Room 2015 and walk over to the pantry located at 1203 W. Green St, Urbana, for the presentation.

    In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for a special presentation on Tuesday, 9/24 from 12:00 - 12:50 pm, Room 2015. If you are interested in helping coordinate this event, contact Sharva Hampton-Campbell at shamcamp@illinois.edu for more information.

  • Upcoming Pre-Law Events

    Pre-Law 101—Monday, January 29, 4-5 pm in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. This workshop is designed for incoming students who are new to pre-law or are interested in learning more about it. It will cover: What it means to be pre-law at Illinois, course selection, majors, and extracurriculars, building a pre-law resume, and what law schools are really looking for. We will outline a four year plan to maximize your undergraduate experiences in order to make a great law school candidate. We’ll also take any questions about law school and legal careers. Please register here so that we can ensure enough seating and materials for everyone. Incoming students should attend a Pre-Law 101 prior to setting up an individual pre-law advising appointment.

    LSAT Prep Fair—Tuesday, February 6, 4-6 pm, Illini Union Rooms B&C. The LSAT Prep Fair features several LSAT prep companies and four mini-workshops by LSAT experts who will share what is on the LSAT and how to prepare for it. LSAT prep companies will be offering discounts and sharing helpful resources. Have some snacks, watch a quick demonstration of logic games, and win prizes, including LSAT prep course scholarships!

    Who should attend? Freshmen and Sophomores: Find out what’s on the LSAT and how to prepare for it! Join us for mini-workshops by experts about LSAT content. Have some snacks and talk to different LSAT prep companies about how you can plan ahead to maximize your LSAT performance!

    Juniors, Seniors, and Alumni: Learn about the LSAT and figure out which LSAT prep option is best for you! Talk to different LSAT prep companies about their most effective class formats for you. All participants will receive LSAT prep class discounts! We will also raffle off some scholarships and other great prizes.

    Practice LSAT—Friday, February 16, 8:30 am-12:00 pm. Whether you are taking the real Law School Admission Test in June (or later in 2018) or this is your first-ever baseline test, this is a great opportunity to take the LSAT in a testlike environment with a proctor. This practice opportunity features an actual, previously administered LSAT in a realistic, timed testing environment. Seating is limited. Test details and location will be emailed to registrants before the exam.  Please register here. Special thanks to the Law School Admission Council for granting a license to Pre-Law Advising Services for use of this LSAT.

    Negotiating Law School Scholarships—Monday, February 26, 5:00-6:15 pm in 1090 Lincoln Hall. Applications are finished, and now acceptances and financial aid offers are rolling in. How can applicants have a respectful yet productive conversation that potentially results in more scholarship dollars being awarded?   • Upcoming DCFS webinars

    DCFS is hosting webinars for students and alumni that are interested in learning more about employment with DCFS. We are hosting several lunchtime informational sessions, on Tuesday’s from 11am-12pm and Thursday’s from 12pm-1pm, starting 11/5 through 12/17. We will briefly discuss the application process and then have Child Protection Specialist and Child Welfare Specialist discuss their positions and what to expect. There will be time for Q&A at the end. We are hosting these through the virtual platform Webex and the attached flyer has links to each session. Feel free to share the flyer with students, alumni and faculty.

    We are also bringing on 60 Children and Family Service Interns (trainee). We currently have postings at www.work.illinois.gov until 5pm on 11/20/2020. These are full time, paid positions that include state benefits. The trainee titles are for applicants that meet the education requirement for Child Protection Specialist and Child Welfare Specialist (bachelor in social work, or a related human service field (psychology, sociology, early childhood/child & family service, rehabilitation services, etc., or a related criminal justice/law enforcement) but don’t have the required experience to be eligible for Child Protection Specialist or Child Welfare Specialist titles. Once they have the required experience, they can apply for promotions to CPS or CWS.

  • University YMCA New American Welcome Week

    Welcoming Week is an annual series of events held in communities across the United States that brings together immigrant and nonimmigrant community members to get to know one another and build community cohesion. This year in Champaign County, 33 events will take place from Friday, September 13 through Sunday, September 22. All events are free, open to the public, and for all ages.     Beginning October 5, we will launch Bailey Global Scholars, a 7-month scholarship program designed to help University of Illinois students grow as responsible and engaged global citizens by supporting critical reflection, dialogue, and action across differences of culture and power. Bailey Global Scholars will participate in an online "Education through Global Engagement" program during the Spring 2021 semester culminating in a volunteer immersion (virtual or in person) capstone experience during Summer 2021.     The University of Illinois Veteran Project is looking for volunteers to help interview veterans and produce documentaries about the veteran's lives and military experience. Their goal is to personally honor veterans while recording and preserving history. Volunteers are needed to help interview the veterans and produce the documentaries.     The race is held October 7th starting at 9am and followed immediately by a pancake breakfast and the fountain dyeing at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center.     The Career Center (TCC) is seeking two energetic and customer-oriented undergraduate summer interns for 2018. The Career Center is the primary point of contact for all students regarding professional development.     Proposal Writing for Undergraduate Research Workshop (PWRW) Virtual Edition

    During this workshop, we will discuss the fundamentals of proposal writing, guiding students to formulate successful research projects and explain their research in a concise and compelling manner that is understandable to a general audience. Students will leave the workshop with (1) basic knowledge about research proposals and their structure, (2) tactics and tools to write successful research statements, and (3) a list of resources for assistance in the writing process.

As part of the program, students will (1) attend regular weekly class meetings (GC 295, Introduction to Undergraduate Research, 3 credit hours) with OUR/Grad College instructors; and (2) work one-on-one with their graduate mentors, an average of 5-6 hours per week. As part of the course requirement, students will complete a final project, consisting of a poster, to be presented during the Undergraduate Research Symposium, an annual event sponsored by OUR.

    Please note that due to COVID19, GC295 course sections will be online. Also, in their project abstracts, graduate student mentors have indicated whether work with their undergraduate mentees will be: in-person preferred, open to discussion (whether remote or in-person), or remote preferred.  Any in-person research work must meet all campus and unit safety protocols.     Undergraduate researchers will be given course credit (3 credit hours). Undergraduate students will attend regular weekly class meetings with OUR and Grad College instructors, as well as work one-on-one with their graduate mentors. Students will also complete a final project, consisting of a research poster, to be presented during “Undergraduate Research Week” sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR).

  • Undergraduate Diversity Scholars Initiative

    The Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) is seeking applications for a new Undergraduate Diversity Scholars initiative. This program would bring ten (10) undergraduates from underrepresented groups to the ARNOVA annual conference in November 2018 to attend a workshop on paths to higher education, ideally in the field of nonprofit, philanthropic, and voluntary action studies. Students will participate in a Professional Development Workshop (PDW) to be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 as a pre-session of the ARNOVA Annual Conference in Austin, TX. The PDW will introduce participants to the world of non-profit social science research and pathways to higher education. Scholars will also attend panels based on each student's research interest, will have opportunity to meet current graduate students and faculty from underrepresented communities, to learn alongside senior scholars in the field and to participate in an array of social and scholarly conversations. The hope is that this opportunity will provide a window into the work and life of social science researchers and evaluators.

    Requirements:

    To qualify for the Undergraduate Diversity Scholars Program, applicants must be considering applying to an accredited graduate program with a focus on philanthropic, social science, nonprofit or voluntary action studies. The selection committee actively seeks applications from persons of traditionally underrepresented groups. Preference is given to African-American, Hispanic/Latino Americans and Native Americans students.
