  Dear Illini who want to change the world: 

  Are you concerned about issues facing your community, campus or country, and are you actively working to make change?  The prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship program is looking for the academically strong student who has a passion for public service.

  Evaluators look for leadership ability, potential for influencing public policies, community service and extracurricular involvement, strong academic performance, and potential to perform well in a graduate school program. It awards $30,000 merit-based scholarships to U.S. citizen college students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service.  Public service includes a wide array of career possibilities, such as public health; local, state, or federal government; educational policy; international relations; conservation; and environmental protection. Candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership experiences in campus and community service activities.

  Truman Scholars have pursued many fields of study, such as agriculture, engineering, economics, education, government, history, international relations, law, political science, public administration, and public health. Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving funding.

Students who are selected receive credit through the Psychology Department (PSYC 496, 340, 341) but students from any major are welcome to apply. Because our CCPs help support our and provide Outreach & Prevention Services, we week a diverse, inclusive, and representative cohort.

• Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP) Is Now Accepting Applications!

  The Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP@UI) offers undergraduate students with little or no research experience the opportunity to assist advanced graduate students with their research projects. Through a one-on-one research experience with their graduate student mentor, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to learn what it means to do research, create knowledge, and produce scholarship.

  Undergraduate students selected to be part of the program will begin work with their mentors in Spring 2020. As part of the program, students will (1) attend regular weekly class meetings (GC 295, Introduction to Undergraduate Research, 3 credit hours) with OUR/Grad College instructors; and (2) work one-on-one with their graduate mentors, an average of 5-6 hours per week. As part of the course requirement, students will complete a final project, consisting of a poster, to be presented during “Undergraduate Research Week,” an annual event sponsored by OUR.

  The Critical Language Scholarship, provided by the U.S. Department of State, is a fully-funded, intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for undergraduate and graduate students.  A list of eligible languages is available here.

  The CLS institutes cover one academic year of university-level language coursework in 8 to 10 weeks over the summer, and include cultural programming, local language partners, and excursions.   The Overnight Shelter Assistant is responsible for overnight assistance and oversight of women utilizing Austin’s Place Emergency Overnight Shelter. This position is a three-night-a-week overnight position, 11.5 hour shifts. Overnight staff is required to remain awake during the overnight hour. The Overnight Shelter Assistant reports to the Shelter Director.

  Qualifications: It is recommended that the overnight shelter assistant have at least a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. While no other specific credentials are required to fill this position (e.g.,LCSW, MSW, etc.), experience with the homeless population and/or mental illness is preferred. Presence of good judgment is required as intervention by emergency services may, at time, be necessary. This staff member should have strong attention to detail and organizational skills, as well as good communication skills, and be able to be compassionate with our guests. This person must have the ability to remain awake and alert during the hours on shift.

  Compensation/Hours: This is an hourly position. The rate of pay is based on experience and the hours are 7:45PM– 7:15 AM with one half-hour break. This position begins on November 1, 2019 with one paid 4-hour training session prior to this date. This is a temporary position that ends on April 15, 2020.

  The Family Resiliency Center is currently accepting applications for the HDFS 494: STRONG Kids undergraduate research course.  

  The STRONG Kids Research Program provides a unique, team-based, hands-on research experience working with over 450 families with children aged 12 months -5 years.

  Students are eligible if they:

  Will have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing by Fall 2019 Are available to work regular hours on an assigned research project for 6-9 hours per week Have two, 3 hour blocks of time each week (including one evening) Are able to attend class every other week on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:00

  This year-long supervised research course provides students with first-hand experience working as part of a research team and develops a working knowledge of the theory and applications of transdisciplinary research. Students are provided with an overview of research program issues; develop oral and written communication skills, data management skills, team building skills, critical thinking skills, and professional work environment skills; trained in mixed methods relevant to factors that contribute to child and family health; identify opportunities and barriers in transdisciplinary team work; and prepare a scientific presentation that reflects the knowledge of transdisciplinary science gained through working on actual research projects.

  HDFS 494: Developmental Assessment and Screening Project

  Through this course you will:

  Learn about early childhood assessments and screenings Receive training on a developmental screening instrument Gain hands-on experience conducting developmental screenings at the Child Development Laboratory

  Course times- You will be assigned to one section for the semester, and will also be required to attend orientation at the beginning of the year. (Please let Meghan know which section works best for you, or if either does.)
