What is Sparkpost
Sparkpost is the vendor that Email+ now uses to deliver emails. For those of you sending emails and monitoring the results through the Reports tab you will notice a few new terms in the reports. This post will attempt to explain how Sparkpost suppresses email addresses and what you can do to verify and unsuppress an email address.
When does Sparkpost suppress an email address
When emails are sent through Sparkpost they keep track of the email addresses that bounce back as bad. Next they suppress these email addresses (do not send to them again) when others try to send to them. If Sparkpost keeps sending to bad emails our spam score goes up and eventually our servers get blocked for sending too many bad emails.
Where can I unsuppress an email address
Email+ has a new Suppression tab. On this tab you can look up any email address and see if it is suppressed. If the address is suppressed the reason will be displayed. For manual emails (non Foundation/TED) there will be an option to unsuppress the address. If an address is unsuppressed Sparkpost will send to it again. If the address bounces it will be suppressed again.
On the Suppression tab there is also a text area that you can paste in lists of emails to unsuppress (non Foundation/TED). This might be used in the case where new students emails were created and emailed to before they were actually activated to receive emails. Sparkpost would identify them as bad and suppress each email.
Where can I find the reason an email address was suppressed
The reason an email address was suppressed can be found in two ways:
- Use the new Suppression tab to lookup any address and find out why it was suppressed.
- Use the Reports tab to run a 'Sent and Bounces Detail' report. This will show exactly what happened to every email sent.
