    An NRES alum serving as the Yellowstone National Park Project Manager for Hickey  Brothers Research sent this announcement:

    We are a company contracted by the National Park service to do Lake trout suppression and research on Yellowstone Lake. . . . Being an Alum, I thought it could be a good opportunity to get students from Illinois involved. I am currently seeking (5) Fisheries Technicians for the 2017 field season in Yellowstone National Park. We offer both Full time Seasonal employment as well as a 12-14 week summer Internship program (paid). The deadline for applications is February 3rd, 2017. Interviews for qualified applicants will be held mid February.

    RESEARCH ASSISTANT I -B/H needed to assist avian sampling (stationary point counts and nest search/monitoring), vegetation sampling (woody and herbaceous), and data entry tasks for shale gas pipeline rights-of- way (ROW) research project in eastern Ohio throughout the posted time window. The successful applicant will work alongside the project’s graduate student as well as other field technicians working on different components of the ROW research (e.g., pollinators, herpetofaunal).

    The Science Communication Coordinator (IWRC and IISG) serves as a regular, full time, 12 month academic professional. Illinois Water Resources Center (IWRC) is co-administered with Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG), and this position will share duties between these organizations. This position will manage communication programming for the IWRC research and outreach programs. This position will also participate in the IISG communication team based on skills and experience. Focus areas may include: drinking water, water quality, private wells, storm water management, and other areas related to IWRC and IISG research and outreach programming.     This permanent, full-time Fish Biologist position is located with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 3 at the Carterville Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office in Wilmington, IL. Incumbent will work on Asian carp management and control efforts in the Chicago Area Waterways and the upper Illinois River to help prevent Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes.  Innovative sonar work in and around the Electric Dispersal Barrier will be conducted as will sampling using nets and electrofishing.  Incumbent will use teamwork, creativity, and partnering skills to help solve complex and evolving problems.     The Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (MAFWA) is seeking a contractor to provide technical coordination and plan-writing services to assist MAFWA’s member states, plus Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and other interested states with Monarch Conservation efforts. The successful candidate will be an independent contractor to MAFWA, eligible for monthly payments for work performed and for approved travel reimbursement; the position will not be eligible for benefits.     We are seeking a PhD student to work on a multidisciplinary project investigating the long-term carbon and nutrient dynamics following clearcut harvesting a red spruce – balsam fir forest in northern Maine.  This project has high relevance to sustainable forest management and renewable energy priorities in the modern forest sector for this region. The overall research project involves: quantifying trends in ecosystem carbon and nutrient pools 35 years after clear-cutting the balsam fir-red spruce forest at Weymouth Point paired-watershed study area; comparing 35-year ecosystem carbon pool dynamics with carbon dynamics predicted by an IPCC-relevant forest carbon budget model (e.g. CBM-CFS3); and informing development of criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management (SFM) in forest policy and certification systems adopted for balsam fir – red spruce forests in northern New England. A start date of July 2017 is possible to initiate field work prior to doctoral program enrolment in September 2017.

    The U.S. Forest Service will conduct a Student and Recent Graduate Hiring Event at the 2016 Society of American Foresters Convention, held November 2-6 in Madison, Wisconsin.  Over 140 Pathways Student Intern and Recent Graduate positions will be available at the event.     The Stephen A. Forbes Biological Station, established in 1894, is located along the Illinois River on Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge near Havana, Illinois. It is the oldest inland field station in North America and one of nine field stations of the Illinois Natural History Survey. The Frank C. Bellrose Waterfowl Research Center is housed at the Forbes Biological Station. Staff of the Bellrose Waterfowl Research Center conduct research on a variety of topics relevant to wetland ecosystems, with a specific focus on the ecology and management of wetlands, waterfowl, and other waterbirds. Our research efforts focus on the Illinois and Mississippi rivers and the wetlands throughout the State.
