  • Soil Scientist/Geologist

    The Willamette National Forest will soon be advertising to hire one permanent, full-time Geologist or Soil Scientist, either the 0470 or 1350 series, at either the GS 9 or GS 11 level.  The selected employee will have the option of duty station at the McKenzie River Ranger District, Sweet Home Ranger District or Detroit Ranger District.  The expectation is the employee will work at all three Districts based on the Soils and Geology work scheduled on the north end of the Forest. The purpose of this Outreach Notice is to inform potential candidates of this opportunity and help the deciding official determine the best way to advertise the position.

    Come study songbird behavioral ecology in the shrublands of northern Illinois as part of a Ph.D research project from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  I am looking for one (1) motivated, organized and detail-oriented field technicians with a strong work ethic to help assist with a playback experiment investigating social information use for habitat selection by Yellow Warblers.  Field technicians will assist with nest-searching, banding, spot-mapping and making behavioral observations of Yellow Warblers.  Field technicians will also help with basic maintenance of playback equipment.

    The soil scientist provides basic input to interdisciplinary reports, best management practices for the soil resource, and planning efforts. The position requires skills for gathering, analyzing, and interpreting Soil Survey and Ecological Site Inventory data, including a good understanding of plant soil relationships.     The MD Department of Natural Resources, Forest Service, is currently accepting applications for up to six seasonal natural resource technicians.

    Note: The positions are full-time, 40 hours/week, with occasional weekend or evening obligations.  Applicants must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

    Natural Areas Steward:Plan, schedule, and work independently on all aspects of on-going field projects related to property management and stewardship of state managed lands. These projects include, but are not limited to vegetation surveys, natural community restoration, habitat assessments and inventories for rare and listed flora and fauna, trails and infrastructure inventories, fencing, and boundary marking. This position requires an ability to travel throughout assigned work area and work irregular hours, evenings, and occasional week-ends.
