  • Important update regarding American Sign Language courses on campus

    Due to budgetary challenges and the recent retirement of one of the long time ASL instructors, Speech and Hearing Science Department Head Dr. Karen Kirk is announcing that the department will be suspending SHS 121 American Sign Language I courses for next semester to review the sustainability of the ASL course language sequence. None of the SHS 121 courses will be offered in Spring 2018.

    The department is committed to ensuring that all students currently enrolled in the ASL course sequence at the U of I (SHS 121 ASL 1 and SHS 221 ASL2) and are using this to address the foreign language requirement can complete it. The suspension of ASL classes for this Spring is only for SHS 121. The department will still be offering all sections that are scheduled for SHS 221 American Sign Language 2, as well as SHS 321 American Sign Language 3 in Spring 2018, and as needed for the 2018-2019 academic year. SHS 222 Language and Culture of Deaf Communities will also continue to be offered.

Our project is a step towards the Grand Challenge Initiative to eradicate racism in collaboration with the Champaign Mental Health Board. We will be presenting this webinar to the Champaign/ Urbana community and we will be using this session as a guide for feedback.

  • In Focus Group - Fall 2017

    The In Focus Group will being on Wednesday (10/11/2017). Attached is the updated flyer for this semester’s In Focus Group. It is the Counseling Center’s education and peer support group designed for coaching students who experience difficulties commonly associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Students do not need an ADHD diagnosis so any students who may be benefit from learning time management, setting goals, managing procrastination, and better self-care are welcomed. Students who are interested in participating are asked to contact me to register. Space is limited to 10 students.

  • Information about registering for ASL classes and SHS 222

    For Spring 2020, the department is managing enrollment in all three ASL classes, as well as in SHS 222, via a wait list, which is why these courses appear on the class schedule to be noted as closed or restricted. If you have students who are interested in taking any of these classes, please share with them that although registration does not open until November 4, they can go to the Course Explorer website and put themselves on the waitlist now for any of these classes. They will find the link to the URL below each class section’s meeting time, which is as follows:  https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/2162112. (The URL is updated each semester.) Students will be prompted to fill out the online form and should note the specific course and section of the class they are interested in taking.

    It is important to also inform students that being placed on the wait list does not guarantee registration in any of these courses but communication about enrolling off the wait list will come from Andrea Paceley (apaceley@illinois.edu) in the SHS office, 217-333-2230.

  • In Her Shoes Domestic Violence Simulation

    On Friday, March 27th from 12 pm- 2 pm in room 2018. This is an interactive activity that brings awareness to the additional struggles domestic violence victims/survivors face due to poverty.   • Inner Voices Social Issues Theatre

    Spring 2021 Courses 

    Intro to Social Issues Theatre (Theatre/Gender and Women’s Studies 218) 

    3 credit hours Meets Mondays & Wednesdays 1-2:50 p.m. Hybrid/Allen Hall Room 40 

    An introductory exploration/survey of the rich histories, theories, and practices of community-based and social issues theatre. Lively connection of social issues in today’s world through discussion, participation, lecture, and performance! 

    Devising Social Issues Theatre (Theatre/Gender and Women’s Studies 418) 

    3 credit hours undergrad/1unit graduate Meets Mondays & Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Hybrid/Armory Free Theatre (Armory 160) 

    Focus on writing and devising theatre explicitly concerned with social issues in the context of community. Works created in this course often go on to be performed by the ensemble. 

    Leading Post-Performance Dialog (Theatre/Gender and Women’s Studies 417) 

    4 credit hours undergraduate/1 unit graduate Meets Tuesdays & Thursdays 4-5:50 p.m. with additional times scheduled for fieldwork. 

    Arts engagement exploration and the dramaturge in social issues theatre. Includes hands-on experience of animateur (facilitation) work with INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre. Great class for those who want to use theatre in their work (social workers, educators, and other community-focused practitioners). 

    INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre Ensemble (Theatre 400M) 

    2 credit hours Rehearses Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays 5-7 p.m. Hybrid/Armory Free Theatre (Armory 160) 

    The focus of the ensemble is public performances. Open to all students. While past experience is useful, it is not necessary. Students may choose to receive credit for their participation in the ensemble. 

    INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre takes on subject matter that is timely and sometimes difficult to address. This requires a willingness to be open-minded and curious about social issues and social justice. Past topics have included sexual assault, socioeconomic status, gender identity and transphobia, racism, and suicide. INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre instructors are practitioners in their fields.

  • Interfaith Dance Team Announcement

    If you are interested in diversity and inclusion, dancing for fun, and learning about other cultures, then we hope to have you on Colors of Faith!

    Colors of Faith is an interfaith dance team, and we dance to songs of various faiths to foster unity. We have danced to songs of Jewish, Sikh, Christian, and Hindu faiths and hope to expand. This semester, all our practices and socials will be virtual, yet we still plan on creating an engaging experience! Undergraduate and graduate students of all identities are welcome.

    Our Virtual Clinics will be on Thursday, September 10 from 9-10pm CST. During clinics, we will teach the tryout piece step-by-step, and you'll have a chance to meet the team.     The FRED S. BAILEY INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP FOR CAUSE-DRIVEN LEADERS offers scholarships of $600-1800 dollars to University of Illinois undergraduate and Master's level graduate students leading international service projects who plan to travel within the specified period.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of their demonstrated commitment to the project/program, long-term career goals in international development or related fields, the trip’s potential impact on the student’s learning and professional development, potential for positive impact on the host community and financial need. If selected, all recipients must participate in a 6-week online pre-departure course.

  • IT Pop-up Help Desk

    The School of Social Work will be hosting a Pop-up Help Desk from 9-12 and 1-4 Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday during the first week of class. 

    The pop up desk will be there to help students with basic University IT needs such as password resets, getting connected to wireless, and setting up email on mobile devices. They can also answer any questions about computing resources and technology on campus as well.

  • iVenture Accelerator

    Two more rounds to apply to join the 2017-2018 cohort of the iVenture Accelerator, the educational accelerator for the top student startups at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This is a chance to work-full time on your venture over the summer with $10,000 in seed funding, $2,500 per teammate to cover living costs, co-working space, and a world-class networks of funders, advisors, and industry experts.

    I w-I-L-L make a difference

    Interested in becoming a big sister/big brother or a role model for a child nearby?

    I w-I-L-L is a new student organization that holds event and activities for students at local elementary schools, giving them a chance to guild a relationship with a college student. The goal is for children to learn how to become successful and have confidence through the guidance of their older peer. In the end, hopefulll both children and their big brother/sister could learn from one another.

  • Job Opportunity at Austin's Place

    The Overnight Shelter Assistant is responsible for overnight assistance and oversight of women utilizing Austin’s Place Emergency Overnight Shelter. This position is a three-night-a-week overnight position, 11.5 hour shifts. Overnight staff is required to remain awake during the overnight hour. The Overnight Shelter Assistant reports to the Shelter Director.

    Qualifications: It is recommended that the overnight shelter assistant have at least a High School Diploma or GED equivalent. While no other specific credentials are required to fill this position (e.g.,LCSW, MSW, etc.), experience with the homeless population and/or mental illness is preferred. Presence of good judgment is required as intervention by emergency services may, at time, be necessary. This staff member should have strong attention to detail and organizational skills, as well as good communication skills, and be able to be compassionate with our guests. This person must have the ability to remain awake and alert during the hours on shift.

    Compensation/Hours: This is an hourly position. The rate of pay is based on experience and the hours are 7:45PM– 7:15 AM with one half-hour break. This position begins on November 1, 2019 with one paid 4-hour training session prior to this date. This is a temporary position that ends on April 15, 2020.

    Job Title: Pandemic Health Navigator                                    Department:

    Reports to: PHN Supervisor                                                  Effective Date:

    Job Summary: The Pandemic Health Navigator (PHN) will work to decrease the spread of COVID-19 through specialized and individualistic work with clients. PHNs will work with clients who do not often fit well within the standard medical model. The PHN will work closely with medical providers, primary care teams, and other agencies to improve patient outcomes and care. PHNs will complete an intake interview for their clients, provide regular follow-up care and documentation and provide referrals to other services, as necessary. This position will work to decrease the disparities in health due to COVID-19 and will help advocate for social and environmental needs as they arise. The PHN will work closely with PCPs, Local Health Departments, and Community Based Organizations to provide wrap-around services to encourage clients to remain in their homes while positive with COVID-19. The PHN will create a foundation of trust for continued care of socially vulnerable populations.

  • Join SOAR to tutor local youth

    SOAR tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate.     Announcing the School of Social Work Journal of Undergraduate Social Work Research (JUSWR)

    The Journal of Undergraduate Social Work Research (JUSWR) is an annual publication that showcases peer-reviewed undergraduate research and related works from social work and related disciplines.

    In Spring 2018, JUSWR will publish its 2nd issue. If you have written work,  or projects relevant to the advancement of social and economic justice that you are proud of, consider becoming a part of this exciting new venture by submitting your work to JUSWR.

    Revised submission deadline for the May 2018 2nd issue: April 11th, 2018

  • Journal of Undergraduate Social Work Research - Two New Issues

    The Journal of Undergraduate Social Work Research published two issues this fall – Volume 4, No. 1 and No 2.

    These two volumes feature a variety of pieces, including creative expression pieces, literature reviews, research poster presentations, and scholarly research papers. The issues were edited by Senior Editor, Rebecca Hawley, the Advisory board (Rachel Garthe & Jan Carter-Black), and 7 undergraduate editors (6 BSW students and 1 Psychology student). A huge thank you to everyone who promoted the journal and mentored these students! And congratulations to the students on becoming published authors!

  • Jubilee Cafe is starting Oct 2

    Monday October 2 will be the first meal for Jubilee Cafe. This is a weekly meal, free to anyone. 

    If you or any other student you know who is in need, either experiencing hunger or food insecurity. 

    They will serve Mondays, 5:00-6:30 at 805 S 6th St. The meal is served restaurant style, with home made food. 

     

  • Kevin T. Early Memorial Scholarship

    The Creative Writing Program would like to announce the 2020-2021 academic year's Kevin T. Early Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is made possible from an endowment by William and Donna Early in memory of their son, a poet, Kevin T. Early. It awards $2000 to a student with freshman standing at UIUC for the 2020-2021 school year. The deadline for application is January 28, 2021.

    For consideration, students must submit 5 poems via email to John Dudek, the Associate Director of Creative Writing at: jdudek4@illinois.edu. The complete manuscript should not exceed 5 pages (so 1 poem to a page). Submissions should be attached to the email as .docx (Word) files.

    The subject line of the email should read: “EARLY PRIZE SUBMISSION: Last name.”

    Eligibility:  Any student with freshman standing at UIUC for the 2017-2018 school year and who has demonstrated an aptitude for and a skill in writing poetry.

    Rules:  Students must submit 5 poems.  The complete manuscript should not exceed 5 pages.  The poems must NOT have been previously published.

  • LGBT Ally Training

    Have you ever wanted to offer your support to a marginalized community, but don’t know how? Want to be an ally, but don’t know what to do? The GSWA executive board, the campus Counseling Center, the School of Social Work, and the LGBT Resource Center have partnered up to do an LGBT Ally Training! It is important that social workers, specifically, are culturally competent and able to work with all communities; especially those who have been historically oppressed.

    This workshop will be help held Friday, March 9th from 1pm-4pm at the school of social work. We hope that you will be able to come learn more about how to support the LGBT community at work and in your personal life. Below I have attached the flyer for this event.

    Social Work is a sponsor the 6th annual LGBTQ Research Symposium happening May 24th and 25th at the I-Hotel and Conference Center (https://lgbtresearch.weebly.com/2018-program-schedule.html). We are looking for student volunteers to operate the School of Social Work informational table that will be set up in the main hall during the Symposium.   • Luce Scholars Program Information Session and Workshop

    Do you want to get experience living and working in Asia?

    Have you spent 18 weeks or less in Asia since you graduated from high school? 

    If so, you may be eligible to apply for the Luce Scholars Program. The Luce is a one-year internship in your field after graduation in Asia or Southeast-Asia, and it is designed specifically for students and recent alumni who are U.S. citizens and who have spent less than 18 weeks in Asia since graduating from high school. For any candidate, even students who lived in Asia as a child or teenager, the Luce eligibility requirements this year would only count time in Asia since high school graduation toward the 18-week limit. With these new requirements, even more students on our campus are eligible to apply – maybe you!
