  • Annual Review Due by February 29!

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences is conducting the 2016 Annual Review. As an online Master of Science candidate, it is our pleasure to help support your education plans and therefore, very important that your most current information is on file. Regardless of whether you are currently enrolled in classes or not, it is important that you submit the Annual Review.

All Annual Review Forms and supplemental materials (including resume, current capstone proposal or statement of capstone interest) are due NO LATER than MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29th. Failure to submit the proper documentation may cause delays that could impede or delay course registration and/or your degree progress.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Renee Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu

  • Annual Review Forms due February 28

This is a reminder that the 2018 Annual Review forms are due on Wednesday, February 28th. If you have not received your form, or need a second copy, please contact Renee Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu

  • Annual Review PAST DUE!

The NRES Graduate Student Handbook (p 18) clearly explains the importance of the Annual Review.

    https://nres.illinois.edu/sites/nres.illinois.edu/files/images/2016%20NRES%20Grad%20Handbook.pdf

Each spring, NRES students are required to complete the Annual Review process and submit their completed forms to the department for their academic records.  Your participation is mandatory, whether you are active or inactive. (This includes students who plan to graduate this May.)

If you have not already submitted your Annual Review form, you are late. Please contact Renee Gracon (gracon1@illinois.edu) if you need a copy of the form.

  • Annual Review Reminder

Just a reminder that all students in the online M.S. program (whether active or inactive) must complete the 2016 Annual Review by February 29th. Included with the Annual Review form should be a copy of your current resume and a copy of your capstone proposal or a statement about what you intend to pursue.

All Annual Review forms should be submitted as word documents. Resumes may be submitted as pdfs.

For questions about the process, please contact Renee Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu.

  • Apologies, Other Registration Information, and Career Bulletin

Sorry for the multiple e-mails that went out with the difficult to read text. I was trying to get it to look reasonable and only realized too late it was sending it as an e-mail each time I tried. My apologies. Here is (hopefully) a more legible version of other registration information. And the newest NRES Career Bulletin is available at http://nres.illinois.edu/students/nres_career_bulletin. Have a terrific weekend, and I apologize again for the multiple e-mails.

  • April 15th isn't only tax day! Important spring reminders.

April 15th isn’t only “tax day”!

Friday, April 15 is the last day for graduate students to drop ALL Spring semester courses from their Spring registration without a grade of W and thus withdraw from Spring semester. Students need to complete a Withdrawal/Cancellation form and obtain their department’s signature and, in the case of International Students, a signature from International Student Scholar Services. Students considering this action are encouraged first to discuss their decision with their adviser and/or program.

Friday, April 15 is the last day to drop individual full term Spring semester courses without a grade of W. Students need to complete a Late Course Change form to complete the process, but first are encouraged to discuss their decision with their adviser and/or program. Dropping a course may affect progress toward degree completion, so the decision is best done in consultation with a student’s program.

Friday, April 29 is the last day to complete a master’s capstone project (or thesis) deposit. Because deposit deadlines are firm, students are strongly encouraged to submit the thesis or capstone project to the NRES office at least two weeks before the deadline in order to allow sufficient time to make and re-submit all requested format corrections. For May graduation, any corrections requested by the Department, and all required deposit materials, must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on the day of the deposit deadline.

Saturday, May 14 is commencement. For further information, go to: http://www.grad.illinois.edu/commencement.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions about the process. The Annual Review forms are due back no later than February 29, 2016.

  • Attention Capstone students

A new course has been added to the Spring 2019 course offerings. NRES 516: Making Capstone Progress is designed to motivate, support, and provide extra guidance for students who are in the process of writing their capstone papers. Isolation that comes as part of being an online student can slow (or even derail) student progress unless there are weekly deadlines established. In addition, guided weekly reviews and the camaraderie of a small group of students who are in similar stages of the program will provide you with additional comfort and support. Students who are currently enrolled in NRES 503 or NRES 505 for the Spring 2019 semester will automatically be added to the Compass 2g site without needing to register for the class. Students not enrolled in capstone credit for Spring 2019 who feel they would benefit from this structured approach should register via the Self-Service portal by selecting NRES 512, CRN 69636. The synchronous class sessions will meet on Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. All written work generated for this class will correspond directly to your capstone.

Not sure you qualify for the course or need more information, please contact Renee Gracon (gracon1@illinois.edu) or Piper Hodson (phodson@illinois.edu).

  • Attention capstone students who earned an "incomplete" in Fall 2016

If you were enrolled in a capstone course during the fall 2016 semester and you have not finished the capstone requirements, please take note. The “incomplete (I)” grade you were awarded will automatically convert to an “F” at the end of the spring semester UNLESS you complete the petition to request an extension. You will find the form at: http://www.grad.illinois.edu/gsas/graduate-student-request-form. You will need to supply your name, UIN, the capstone course number and CRN, and the number of credit hours for which you were enrolled, and a brief statement indicating that you are still actively working on your capstone project. (Those who have previously petitioned for an extension do not need to re-petition.) Please take care of this before the end of the semester! For further information, contact Renée Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu.

  • Capstone Presentation - April 30th - Accelerated Glacier Retreat in Prince William Sound

You are invited to the capstone presentation by Dean Maraldo, “Accelerated Retreat of Coastal Glaciers in the Western Prince William Sound, Alaska”, on April 30th at 2:00 pm CST.

Presentation abstract: Analysis of historical maps and multi-temporal Landsat imagery suggests most coastal glaciers in the western Prince William Sound have retreated since the end of the Little Ice Age, with an unprecedented period of accelerated retreat after 2004/06.  Area measurements for 43 glaciers were derived from digitized outlines, and lengths were calculated using a semi-automatic, GIS-based algorithm.  From 1950 to 2018, the total area of all glaciers decreased by 316 km2, with 32% of the loss occurring after 2004/06.  Declining winter precipitation before 2004/06, followed by increasing summer precipitation and annual temperatures, may have facilitated accelerated melting.

To attend remotely, log in to the Compass Open Learning site or go directly using this link: https://us.bbcollab.com/guest/60529694b36542ff9c641d1ee40c049b . To attend the presentation in person, on campus, please contact Renee Gracon or Karen Claus for complete details.

As a volunteer for a local Conservation District and in consultation with a private landowner, land management strategies were explored toward the development of a long-term conservation plan. The SWAPA+H model was used to identify the landowner’s resource concerns as per the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s nine-step conservation planning process. Resource concerns include a decreasing duration of meadow saturation and vernal pool presence, beaver reintroduction, habitat for Greater Sandhill Cranes and Mardon Skipper butterflies, and a reduction of native species while invasive species increase. Management goals strive towards the landowner’s vision of a wet meadow sanctuary protected from future development, timber sales, recreation, hunting, and trespass beyond her lifetime.

  • Capstone Presentation by Mary Richardson, March 30 at 11:00 am

    You are invited!

Title: The Analysis of Water Availability Indicators and Access to Available Water in the Developing, Semi-Arid, Rural Setting.

    Presenter: Mary Richardson

    Date: March 30, 2017 at 11:00 am

    Location: Turner Hall (Room TBA)

Discussions of global water problems that began in the mid- 1970’s resulted in a United Nations declaration that “…all peoples, whatever their stage of development and their social and economic conditions, have the right to have access to drinking water in quantities and of a quality equal to their basic needs.”  In 2015, 663 million people still did not have access to improved drinking water; the majority of which live in the rural, water scarce regions of lesser developed nations. This thesis used a systematic review to evaluate access to available potable water for these householders using the Republic of Kenya as a case example.  Key findings are that existing indicators focus on the physical availability of the water; they do not give metrics for the quantity or quality of the water, nor do they account for access to it.

Parks are an essential community resource that can promote the interaction between humans and the natural world. The connection between time in nature and the positive physical and mental health benefits one can reap is being researched in various subjects, including environmental science, medicine, psychology, and city planning. With a consistently increasing urban population worldwide, the incorporation of parks in urban settings is integral in promoting healthy lifestyle choices for residents. This study investigates the equity of park accessibility and quality in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through the adaptation of public space auditing tools and with the use of Google Earth Imagery, ArcGIS, and United States Census data, this audit suggests non-significant relationships between both the accessibility and the quality of parks and race or socioeconomic status (SES) in Philadelphia. This analysis did reveal a connection between the accessibility and quality of parks, however, regardless of race and SES.
