  • Watershed Application of Agriculture's Conservation Planning Framework (ACFP) - Workshop

Watershed Applications of the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework (ACPF)

    April 1-2, 2019, Nashua IA

Calling all watershed coordinators and planners!

Iowa State University Extension is hosting a training workshop specifically designed for watershed coordinators on the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework (ACPF) April 1st and 2nd in Nashua, IA. The training was developed by the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center along with UW Extension, the North Central Region Water Network, Purdue University, and ISU.

ACPF is a precision conservation tool that leverages high-resolution geo-spatial data to create output maps which are used to identify site-specific opportunities to install conservation practices across small watersheds. At the workshop, you’ll learn:

What ACPF is and how it fits into water resource planning and implementationHow the ACPF can improve the effectiveness of your conservation workHow to work with a GIS technician to develop effective mapsHow to explain the details of the assumptions behind each of the ACPF tools to farmers and community stakeholdersHow to use ACPF output maps to engage diverse stakeholders

No GIS expertise is needed.  In addition to watershed coordinators, this training is perfect for supervisors, decision-makers and private consultants who work closely with watershed practitioners. Attendees will have the opportunity to work alongside instructors to develop a work-plan for incorporating ACPF into their work.

Registration is just $40! Space is limited so sign up before it’s too late.

  • Wild Things 2019 was a huge success!

A heartfelt thank you to all of the NRES alumni and current online students who played such a vital role in our success at Wild Things. Alumni Stacey Libra, Eleanor Schumacher, Mark Krivchenia, and current NRES students Claudia Boothe, Elwood Dumke and Tricia Bethke presented information about their capstone projects to rooms packed with listeners! Alum Kurt Dreisilker, Alumni Aaron Parks, Nancy Kreith, Jeff Weiss, Mark Krivchenia and current students Amy Osterman, Claudia Boothe, and Elwood Dumke volunteered at the Exhibit Hall table and did a super job talking with the many conference attendees and potential new students. The following alumni and current students provided video testimonials that were part of a continuous feedloop highlighting their capstones and the NRES program: Scott Brown, Kevin Hagen, Mark Krivchenia, Christine LePine, Michael Nosbisch, Aaron Parks, Mary Richardson, Eleanor Schumacher, Lydia Scott, Lyn Shirley, Tyler Steury, Catherine Wallace, Tomas Ward, and Josh Yellin. (My sincere apologies if I have forgotten to mention anyone!) We were happy to meet up with many former friends and NRES alumni throughout the day. Wild Things was a great opportunity for 2600 conservationists and preservationists to gather in support of volunteer stewardship the Chicagoland wilderness. We were honored to be part of this outstanding Conference! Thank you to all who attended and participated.

All NRES online students, regardless of whether they are currently enrolled in classes or not, are required to complete the Annual Review each spring. If you have not already submitted your review materials, please do so this week. Please complete your Annual Review promptly and submit it via email this week!

For more information, please contact Renee Gracon (gracon1@illinois.edu).

If you are planning to go to Five Roses with us, please let Renee know so that we can give the restaurant an approximate head count.

    3) A couple of people have indicated that they may want to carpool to the Conference Center (or home). If you are looking to carpool, or need a ride, please let me know and I will share the information with those who are interested.

  • Attention Capstone students

A new course has been added to the Spring 2019 course offerings. NRES 516: Making Capstone Progress is designed to motivate, support, and provide extra guidance for students who are in the process of writing their capstone papers. Isolation that comes as part of being an online student can slow (or even derail) student progress unless there are weekly deadlines established. In addition, guided weekly reviews and the camaraderie of a small group of students who are in similar stages of the program will provide you with additional comfort and support. Students who are currently enrolled in NRES 503 or NRES 505 for the Spring 2019 semester will automatically be added to the Compass 2g site without needing to register for the class. Students not enrolled in capstone credit for Spring 2019 who feel they would benefit from this structured approach should register via the Self-Service portal by selecting NRES 512, CRN 69636. The synchronous class sessions will meet on Monday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. All written work generated for this class will correspond directly to your capstone.

Not sure you qualify for the course or need more information, please contact Renee Gracon (gracon1@illinois.edu) or Piper Hodson (phodson@illinois.edu).

  • From Research to Entrepreneur - NRES Presentation

In August 2013, Crain’s Business Weekly did an article on Josh Yellin’s capstone project - to construct a floating island on the Chicago River as part of an effort to transform the North Branch from a heavily polluted and dying body of water to an oasis for wildlife. (Crain article: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20130831/ISSUE01/308319967/could-this-biologist-save-the-chicago-river)

Since then, Josh has become the co-founder of Urban Rivers (www.urbanriv.org), a non-profit organization whose mission is to revitalize/develop the Wild Mile that will include floating islands, forests, public walkways, and kayaking docs along the Chicago Riverfront to connect urban residents to nature. Through partnerships with many organizations including Patagonia, The Chicago Botanical Garden, BioHaven, Inc., and the Shedd Aquarium, this project will provide access to nature within the city limit.

Learn about this man behind-the-scenes and his vision for bringing life back to urban waterways. Josh will talk about the many challenges of starting a capstone project on limited funds, how to find financial support, and how to go ‘From Research to Entrepreneur’, in his presentation of the same title.

  • Online Annual Event - a Huge Success

The October 11, online student's Annual Event and evening with the Faculty was a huge success. Thank you to all of our wonderful faculty members who gave so generously of their time to chat with our students and share their insights on coursework and capstone projects. One of the key takeaways from the evening is that your capstone is about "will and skills". Selecting a project that is of great interest to you and making sure you have (or are willing to acquire) the necessary skills to implement the project are the two most critical things when making your capstone choice. All of the faculty encouraged online students to reach out to them with questions "inside" and "outside" of class. They also encouraged students to read prolifically and volunteer with organizations in the field to build skills.

Thank you, too, to all who attended. Your valuable input will help us provide better service to the online community. For example, we are investigating the idea of an NRES social media group where students can share biographical information and work experience as well as derive support through networking opportunities for the online M. S. program. We will also be looking for ways to better describe course pre-requisites, so students can determine before enrolling if they have the foundation to be successful in a course.

  • Illinois Assoc. of Environmental Professionals meeting and presentation on environmental pollutants

The NRES department is happy to pass along this announcement from the Illinois Association of Environmental Professionals to our online students.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the world since the 1940s. Most of these chemicals are bio-accumulative and are extremely hard to remediate - and they are being found everywhere. Learn from our esteemed panel how these chemicals will impact your industry or clients, what other states and US EPA are doing about them, and what's next for Illinois.

If you are an online student and would like more information about this meeting in DesPlaines, IL, please click "read more" to view the complete announcement.
