  • SOAR After-school program now recruiting volunteer tutors

SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources is a partnership between the University of Illinois and the International Prep Academy (IPA) in Champaign. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. The program is part of a growing national trend for dual language instruction in schools. Instruction in two languages has value for both emergent bilinguals and those fluent in English. The goal of dual language instruction is to promote positive cross-cultural understanding, bilingualism and biliteracy at a time when knowledge of language and culture confers power.

SOAR is one of several programs available through the Center for Education in Small Urban Communities. The Center is an outreach arm in the College of Education.

Opportunities for U of I students include:

One-to-One Tutoring. SOAR tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15, with time for reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the children. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District the third week of classes. The SOAR program coordinator will provide the clearance form for the tutors. This opportunity is especially interesting to Illinois students who want to gain cross-cultural awareness and relationship skills.

U of I students who would like to tutor with SOAR need to commit by September 11, 2018.

  • Siebel Center for Design (SC4D) Engagement, Involvement, and Experience Form

The Siebel Center for Design (SC4D) is due to open on campus in January 2020 but in the meantime, we are looking to jumpstart programs and events. The Center will enable undergraduate students from all disciplines to experience design thinking, design making and design learning, by working in multidisciplinary team projects, within and outside the curriculum.

To make sure our team understands student interest in these activities, we want to establish your awareness and thoughts about design thinking. To do this, we have created this survey and we would be grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete it.

We thank you for your time: http://bit.ly/2GYtV5z

You can find out more details about the Center at http://designcenter.illinois.edu

  • Sexual Assault Awareness (and Prevention) Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we want to work with YOU to end sexual violence. Why? Because everyone deserves safe and healthy relationships!

Our 2019 theme is “I ASK” based on this year's national #SAAM2019 theme, and is built collaboratively across campus and community partners, to declare that to truly end violence and abuse we must be personally committed to being change agents in our every day lives.

This month, take action — attend an event, workshop, or training — and let’s talk about how we can support survivors and help end sexual violence. We have a host of events planned to support survivors, deconstruct social norms, explore consent, and promote healthy sexuality.

Check out this year's Sexual Assault Awareness Month event calendar, and stay up to date with new events at http://go.illinois.edu/saam.

Thank you for your commitment to helping us create a world without sexual violence. We look forward to seeing you at some of our events this month!

The projects are organized by either the Illini Union Office of Volunteer Programs, another campus group, or community organization, who plan, coordinate, and assist during the project.

    Participants in Service Saturdays will:

Recognize their own role as a member of a community
Understand the value and impact of service on community or agency
Demonstrate knowledge of community issues, needs, strengths and resources
Enhance commitment to community engagement and service through involvement in the community

  • Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Events

The annual celebration of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. every January is a reminder of the fervent belief in a dream that who we can and should be as a nation depends upon recognizing the full humanity of each person, a dream rooted in honest examination of history and the work for racial justice when inequity exists.

It is our community’s commitment to the dream of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. that we will celebrate this month with a series of events, beginning with the MLK Advocacy for Justice Virtual Celebration on Sunday, January 17 at 3 pm Central.

This year's keynote speaker will be the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, one of the leading voices for equality and social justice in our nation today, who will speak live from North Carolina.

More information about this virtual event is at go.illinois.edu/MLK2021. A link to watch the Sunday, January 17 celebration will be posted on this page and is open to the public.

The Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II is the President & Senior Lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and Co-Chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival. Rev. Dr. Barber is also the architect of the Moral Movement, which began with weekly Moral Monday protests at the North Carolina General Assembly in 2013 and recently relaunched again online in August 2020 under the banner of the Poor People's Campaign, which was begun by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968.

This year’s University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign celebration will also feature nearly three weeks of presentations, activities, and discussions reflecting on what it means to speak from a position of conscience. Due to current COVID-19 social distancing requirements, this year’s events will be virtual and open to all through online platforms. A full calendar of events is available online. Pre-registration may be required to receive links to some events.

During a year defined by COVID-19, the pandemic has directed a new light on the persistent and insidious twin crisis of systemic racism and generationally embedded racial disparities afflicting our society. This year’s celebration of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is a common and shared call to action for everyone in the community to commit to the hard work necessary to end racism and social injustice.

  • Research Participants Needed

My name is Amber Strickland, and I am an undergraduate student at The Ohio State University. I am currently working as a research assistant for two graduate students in The Ohio State University’s sociology department, Laura Frizzell and Sadé Lindsay. We are conducting interviews for a research project, and I was hoping that you could be of assistance in disseminating information to people who may be interested in participating. We are looking to interview approximately 120 Black women about the impacts of police violence. Virtually all research on police violence has examined Black men’s experiences, so we think it’s critical that Black women be able to tell their stories as well. We’re looking to interview all Black women - not only those with direct experiences of police violence - because we expect that the experiences of acquaintances and media portrayals of this violence will also have an impact on Black women’s lives. This research project has been ethically cleared by our Institutional Review Board, and all participants will be compensated with an Amazon e-gift card.
