  • Week 2 Announcements for NRES online students

Welcome to the second week of classes! We have two important announcements.

    1) NRES will be conducting the 2015 Annual Review during the month of February. You will be sent information on January 30th. Completing the designated Annual Review form and including the required attachments is a compulsory exercise for all online graduate students. For guidance on how to complete the form we will host an online advising session on Sunday evening, February 8, at 6:00 pm CST. You can join the session by going to: https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?password=M.19C11EA0056D5D3BC3797830F6AFA1&sid=407 There will be ample time for questions at the end of the brief session.  The deadline for submitting the completed form is February 23rd.

    2) We wish to share the following information from the Registrar's office with all online students.

"By the 10th Day of Classes, February 2, Graduate Students should be correctly registered for spring term 2015. It is important to check your registration before February 2 on Student Web Self Service to make sure that you are registered for the courses that you are attending and attending the courses for which you are registered. If necessary, make corrections by adding and dropping courses to your schedule before the 10th day of classes, February 2.

In addition, the 10th day of classes, February 2, is the last day to do the following:

    • Drop courses to reduce your number of credit hours you are registered for to a lower tuition range and receive a refund between the two ranges
    • Add a semester course without permission
    • Submit forms to Audit a semester course
    • Add a first half-session course

Students should be registered appropriately no later than February 2 in order to avoid possible issues with:

    • Tuition/Fee Assessment
    • Financial aid
    • Loan deferment
    • Health Insurance
    • Academic Record/Graduation issues"

For those of you in the northeast, please stay warm and safe as you prepare for the "blizzard-like" conditions that are anticipated.

    Best wishes,

    Renee

  • Planning to Graduate This May?

Congratulations to those students planning to graduate in May!

Here are some important things to remember:

Pending Degree List: It is your responsibility to add your name to the pending degree list. You may do this by going to: UI Integrate (https://apps.uillinois.edu/selfservice/).

Degree Audit: Please request your degree audit early in the semester by contacting the NRES office (nres-ssc@illinois.edu). This is required for all students prior to graduation.

Oral Presentations: Prior to scheduling your oral presentation, your final written paper must be approved by your Research Advisor or Piper Hodson (for those doing an internship). Keep in mind that most capstone papers take several rounds of revisions before they are approved.

In addition, you should select your oral presentation date at least 3 weeks in advance of your presentation. The deadline for the oral presentation of your capstone project/oral exam for May graduation is on or before April 10, 2015. Therefore, if you are planning to graduate in May, you must select your oral presentation date no later than March 20 (and only after your Research Advisor or Piper Hodson has fully approved it).

Depositing your Capstone Paper: After your oral presentation, you must address all committee comments and make all requested revisions. Then re-submit your paper to your committee for final approval. Following this committee approval of your final paper, you must submit it to the NRES office. You should plan to submit the final (approved) paper before April 24th so there is adequate time for the departmental format check in order to meet the Graduate College deposit date of May 1st.

Graduate Exit Survey: All NRES graduates should complete the NRES Exit Survey before graduation. You can find the survey at: https://illinois.edu/fb/sec/8175245

Graduation: The campus-wide Commencement is May 16th. The separate Tassel Turn and College of ACES reception is on May 17th. You should register for the Tassel Turn before May 11 by going to:

    https://web.extension.illinois.edu/registrationNEW/?RegistrationID=200035

For further information about graduation requirements, see the completion document, Final Steps for Graduation (aka “15 things”) available at http://nres.illinois.edu/online-program/non-thesis

For other deadlines and information, contact Renée Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu.

  • NSTA publication information for K - 12 Science Teachers

We pass along this information from the NSTA website:

In Big Data, Small Devices: Investigating the Natural World Using Real-Time Data (2017), authors Donna Governor, Michael Bowen, and Eric Brunsell offer more than two dozen investigations focused on using rich datasets available online. Each activity includes teacher notes that provide information for three-dimensional learning (disciplinary core ideas [DCIs], science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts), as well as background and technology information, an explanation of the data, and suggestions for scaling the lesson up or down.

Activities are grouped into chapters by the sphere of Earth they investigate: atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere, and celestial sphere. These are tied directly to the DCIs that are connected to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

  • Do you have an "incomplete" or "deferred" grade from Fall 2015?

Do you have an Incomplete from Fall 2015? May 5 is the last day for a faculty member to submit a grade to change an I grade or DFR grade in a non-thesis course from Fall 2015 to prevent an F by rule on your academic record. The F may affect Academic Standing which is calculated at the end of the semester. Contact your instructor now if you have an outstanding “I” from Fall 2015 to discuss your options or petition to extend the “I” by completing the petition and sending it to Piper Hodson, nres-ssc@illinois.edu, for signature and processing.

You may access the petition form by going to: http://www.grad.illinois.edu/gsas/graduate-student-request-form

  • Do you have an "incomplete" or "deferred" grade from Fall 2014?

If you were enrolled in a capstone course during the fall 2014 semester and you have not finished the capstone requirements, please take note. The “incomplete (I)” grade you were awarded will automatically convert to an “F” at the end of the spring semester UNLESS you complete the petition to request an extension. You will find the form at: http://www.grad.illinois.edu/gsas/graduate-student-request-form. You will need to supply your name, UIN, the capstone course number and CRN, the number of credit hours for which you were enrolled, and a brief statement indicating that you are still actively working on your capstone project. Please take care of this before the end of the semester!

(Those who petitioned for an extension during a previous semester do not need to re-petition. This announcement is only for those who were enrolled in capstone course credit for the fall 2014 semester and who have not yet petitioned an extension.) For further information, contact Renée Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu.

  • Student Capstone Presentation - July 1

Rachel Williams will be defending her thesis (capstone project) in a presentation titled: Successional Trajectories in Sagebrush Communities Following Conifer Removal on July 1 at 11:00 am.

If you are interested in remotely attending the presentation, please use the following link: https://sas.elluminate.com/m.jnlp?password=M.19C11EA0056D5D3BC3797830F6AFA1&sid=407

Here is a brief description of her project:

Successional trajectories following conifer removal treatments in sagebrush ecosystems are highly dependent upon residual plant structure and function. Understanding how tree dominance and tree-reduction treatment method interact over time will help predict effects on ecosystem resistance and resilience and inform state and transition models to guide management. We reduced conifers by prescribed fire and cutting at 10 sites across the Great Basin and found that in order to retain the shrub components on a site and increase ecosystem resilience and resistance, treatments should be conducted at low-mid tree dominance and mechanical methods such as cutting or mastication should be employed.
