  • Chicago Field Fellow (year-long field technician for fruit bat research), Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago (Madagascar; due June 30)

    This one-year position will involve organizing and participating in monthly field expeditions for Ekipa Fanihy with one additional tech and a team of PhD students from the University of Antananarivo. This position will take over from one of our outgoing techs and overlap a current tech who will remain through August 2024 and be replaced in September 2024. 

  • Land Steward, Conservation Practitioner III (job number 53435), Kankakee Sands Preserve Illinois, The Nature Conservancy (Morocco, IN; due June 16)

    This is a full time, regular, field-oriented position based at our Kankakee Sands Project in Pembroke Township, Illinois.  Duties may include supervising seasonal and part-time staff, may also help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers, may help organize and participate in community outreach events and/or volunteer workdays, may work under minimal/distant supervision and make some independent decisions as delegated by supervisor.  Some work might require working on your own, working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances, may travel a few times a year for training or regional meetings.

  • Plant Protection Technician (seasonal), USDA-APHIS-PPQ (Champaign, IL; due June 12)

    Plant Protection Technicians play an important role in detection and management of invasive species in Illinois. This Technician position will support two APHIS-PPQ programs during the 2023 field season: (1) trapping and visual surveys to detect invasive exotic tree pests and (2) releases of parasitoid wasps for biological control of emerald ash borer. The Technician will install and maintain insect traps, collect and screen samples, evaluate field sites for biological control suitability, release biocontrol agents, and record data in local and national databases. This work will require working in a variety of environments throughout Central and Southern Illinois, including forest preserves, parks, urban and industrial areas, and rail yards. The Technician will also be expected to participate in outreach supporting these programs through daily interactions with the public while working in the field as well as occasional involvement in organized outreach events. The Technician will work both independently and as part of a team.

    This internship utilizes online training and personal one-on-one instruction, working with software packages such as SQL, R, ArcGIS, and Tableau, to manage, manipulate, and analyze fisheries data from across the state. A primary topic of interest will be developed in consultation with the data analyst and worked on throughout the internship to produce a publication or presentation at the local American Fisheries Society Chapter meeting.   • WI Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever (Menomonie, WI; due May 19)

    As an employee of Pheasants Forever, Inc.   • Grassland Bird Conservation PhD Research Assistantship (Jan. 2024), Clemson University (open until filled)

    This position will focus on applied ecology and conservation issues pertaining to grassland birds (e.g., Northern Bobwhite, Henslow’s Sparrow, Bachman’s Sparrow, etc) and grasslands. One component of the project will leverage an existing dataset to evaluate grassland bird response to land cover (habitat) and management activities. The candidate may also pursue field work monitoring grassland birds using autonomous recording units or using drone technology to quantify and map drivers of spatial distributions of grassland birds, including vegetation cover and structure. Additionally, candidates may begin to address socioeconomic drivers and the human dimensions of grassland bird conservation. Students will have the opportunity to develop specific research questions around these or other topics and shape their dissertation to their interest.

    Conduct field and laboratory work in support of research projects on sportfish management and invasion biology in lakes and rivers. Current research projects include spatial ecology and food web effects of habitat enhancements in reservoirs, experimental harvest regulations, and the ecology and management of invasive carp in the Illinois River.     As a Biological Science Technician (Fish) within the Great Lakes Science Center Hammond Bay Biological Station, some of your specific duties will include assisting in conducting field studies and surveys to collect fisheries data and/or specimens to support scientific studies, assisting scientist in laboratory work, performing and/or coordinating the repair and maintenance of research and support equipment, operating and maintaining outboard powered boats, preparing and/or presenting environmental educational material of limited difficulty, overseeing and training new technicians and field crews in standard field data collection and analytical techniques.
