  • Smithsonian Forest Ecology Internships (April-Oct. 2023), National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (Front Royal, VA; due Nov. 21)

    Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI; https://nationalzoo.si.edu/conservation) is offering five paid internships in forest ecology from spring to fall 2023. Interns will work on a team conducting the 2023 census of the Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) plot at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute outside of Front Royal, VA. Interns will be mentored by plot principal investigators Dr. William McShea & Dr. Kristina Anderson-Teixeira. The team will inventory all woody plants within a large (25.6 ha) forest dynamics plot, including species identification and mapping while helping to pioneer a new system of data collection and management techniques using tablets and a system of automated quality control. Interns will gain skills in forest ecology and data management and will be invited to coauthor at least one publication arising from the census. These internships are ideal for recent college graduates who wish to gain research experience prior to pursuing graduate studies or other forest-related career opportunities.

  • Graduate Student Position for Landowner Survey on Wildlife Management (Deadline: December 2, 2022)

    The University of Maryland Extension is seeking a graduate student to assist in conducting research of private landowner knowledge and actions related to wildlife and habitat conservation. The purpose of this project is to inform future educational and extension initiatives related to wildlife conservation. Because 92% of Maryland's land area is under private ownership, wildlife and habitat conservation in the state relies heavily on the actions of private landowners. The graduate student will work with the principal investigator, Dr. Luke Macaulay, and a postdoctoral researcher in implementing the project.The graduate student will be focused on the implementation of the survey, analysis, and publishing results. A significant amount of preparation and design work for the survey has been completed, including conducting focus group meetings, establishing a statewide sample of landowners with both addresses and emails, and pre-testing and piloting the questionnaire. The student will be able to draw on this work in making final adjustments to the survey. The survey will consist of both written and electronic delivery of the survey to maximize response and minimize bias.

    The Myers lab at Washington University in St. Louis (http://www.myersecologylab.com) seeks two seasonal field technicians to participate in two large-scale forest ecology projects at the university's field station, Tyson Research Center (http://tyson.wustl.edu): 1) a re-census of a temperate forest-dynamics plot that is part of the Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO) global network of scientists and forest research sites dedicated to advancing long-term study of the world's forests (https://www.forestgeo.si.edu); and 2) a landscape-scale experiment investigating the importance of plant-functional traits in determining responses of forest diversity and ecosystem functioning to environmental change (prescribed fire) and natural enemies (seed predators & herbivores). The technician will develop skills and gain experience in: 1) field protocols for censuses of long-term ForestGEO plots, including tree identification, tree mapping, and measurements of tree growth, mortality, and seed production; 2) data collection for large-scale field experiments, including surveys of plant community composition and dynamics across environmental gradients; 3) management of large data sets; 4) mentoring of undergraduate and high school students in field research; and 5) team-based ecological field research.

  • Barnum Conservation Policy Fellow. (Michigan United Conservation Clubs) (Lansing, Michigan)

    Michigan United Conservation Clubs (MUCC) is now accepting fellowship applications for the upcoming academic semester to serve as the Barnum Conservation Policy Fellow. MUCC is a non-profit member-based organization with more than 200 affiliated clubs and 40,000 members. Since 1937, MUCC has United Citizens to Conserve, Protect and Enhance Michigan’s Natural Resources and Preserve Our Outdoor Heritage through education, communication, and advocacy. The late Dean Oliver Barnum was a life member of MUCC, a lifelong hunter and conservationist, and a government professor. 

    Applicants can expect to gain diverse experience working for a non-profit entity that is fully dedicated to the conservation of Michigan’s natural resources and the enhancement and preservation of our recreational pastimes. Additionally, the MUCC Policy Fellow will be directly engaged in the day-to-day legislative, regulatory and media-related advocacy efforts of the organization. 

  • Crew Lead/Researcher. (University of Wisconsin-Madison) (Madison, Wisconsin)

    The Peery lab (https://peery.russell.wisc.edu/) is hiring a crew/lead researcher to help conduct their large-scale bioacoustics program in the Sierra Nevada in California monitoring for several avian species including owls, woodpeckers and several species of conservation concern. The project is crucial to multiple well-funded projects and is expected to directly inform management planning and practices in an ecologically sensitive and high-profile region.

    The researcher would report to a project manager while recruiting, training, and leading 2-5 technicians each summer to deploy, collect, and assist with processing data from acoustic recording units across the landscape in remote areas of the southern Sierra Nevada. The researcher would spend the remainder of the year (mid-August to mid-April) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, WI as part of the Peery research group. The fall/winter would be spent processing and analyzing acoustic data, while the spring would be spent largely on field preparation work.

    The position ideally would start on February 1, 2023 but can be shifted if necessary, and includes a full-time salary with a benefits package, including health insurance, and retirement. The position would be for 2 years with the potential to extend.

  • Sustainability Coordinator, The Village of Wilmette, Illinois (open until filled)

    The Village of Wilmette and Wilmette Park District is excited to announce the recruitment of a full-time Sustainability Coordinator. This is an exciting and unique opportunity to make a lasting community-wide impact as this position will support the various governmental bodies in Wilmette to advance sustainability initiatives.   • International Research Experience for Undergraduates (summer 2023), Plant Science for Global Food Security (Philippines; due Jan. 9)

    PSGFS is offering a six-week program made up of two components: three weeks of hands-on research, whereby students will work with IRRI scientists and their teams to evaluate diverse rice genetic materials; and three weeks of a training course called “Rice: Research to Production” (RR2P) in which PSGFS students will interact with other RR2P participants from around the world to learn about the basics of rice research and production and gain an appreciation for the challenges and rewards of international collaboration. RR2P includes socio-cultural trips (e.g., to the Banaue Rice Terraces) and activities in the field, greenhouses, and lab.

    Our Outreach Educator Internship provides an opportunity for next-generation leaders to receive training and coaching to develop their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills and techniques.     Under the general direction of the Director of Natural Resources, the Stewardship Coordinator will develop and administer all aspects of the Forest Preserves of Winnebago County’s volunteer program. The primary focus of this position will be leading the District’s community science program, which utilizes District trained volunteers to collect data on the flora and fauna of Winnebago County.
