  • Wildlife/Wetland Easement Team Specialists, Conservation Districts of Iowa in partnership with Iowa DNR and Iowa NRCS (Fairfield, IA; due Nov. 6)

    You would be serving as a member of the wetland easement team, working with Agricultural Conservation Easement Program Wetland Reserve Easements (ACEP-WRE). One of your main tasks would be to monitor easements to document progress towards meeting habitat and management goals. Monitoring provides an opportunity to assess the habitat and work with easement owners to plan for the development, enhancement, and management of wildlife habitat on their property. You would work with landowners and your team to develop plans that meet the goals of the easement and the landowner as well as the needs of the wildlife that will inhabit their land. The wetland easements that you will be working with are critical for wildlife and water quality efforts in Iowa, and the efforts you put in will be enjoyed for generations to come.

    The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory of the Southern Research Station is recruiting a Hydrologic Science Technician-GS-1316-06. The position will be advertised as a term two-year appointment. The position will be at the GS-6 level (salary range $35,306 to $46,294/yr plus standard Federal benefits). The duty station will be located at the Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory in Otto, NC.  The Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory has been in continuous operation since 1934 and the research program spans the continuum of basic to applied science. Coweeta is a Long-Term Ecological Research Site and works cooperatively with several universities, National Forests, and local, state, and other federal agencies.

(“Landowners” include non-industrial private forestland owners, schools, local units of government, rural, and urban residents.) The Forester position is primarily a field position.

    Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) I Can! Programs introduce Minnesota families to a variety of outdoor activities including camping, fishing, paddling, and rock climbing. Youth Outdoors I Can Paddle! Crew Members serve as paddling instructors and guides for weekend canoe and kayak workshops. Instructors teach basic paddling technique and provide on-the-water guidance for first-time paddlers. Workshops take place on both lakes and rivers managed by the DNR. Instructors provide environmental education throughout the workshops as well, offering participants information about Minnesota’s natural resources.

    The Forbes Biological Station is seeking two research technicians to assist with multiple studies assessing wetland and waterfowl ecology along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. These positions will include a mix of field and lab work. Primary field duties will include automated recording unit (ARU) monitoring/maintenance and waterfowl trapping. Successful candidates will be required to climb ~10ft using climbing sticks to check ARUs in trees and structures. Primary lab duties will include ARU data processing and soil core sample processing. Other research opportunities include participating in marking waterfowl with GSM transmitters, vegetation and waterfowl surveys; sampling waterfowl for avian influenza; vegetation identification and cover-mapping of wetland basins; safe operation of small and large boats, ATVs, and 4-wheel drive trucks; data entry and management; maintenance of equipment and facilities; and other duties as assigned.
