  • Alternative Seasonal Breaks

You're who we've been waiting for! Alternative Seasonal Breaks (ASB) is having its first meeting/info sessions of the semester on Sunday 9/16, Monday 9/17, and Tuesday 9/18 at 6pm at the University YMCA. We know you're tired of pizza by now so we promise we will mix it up a bit!

ASB is a non-profit volunteer rso at UIUC and an affiliate of the University YMCA. ASB sends U of I students on nationwide service trips twice throughout the year (winter and spring break). ASB participants travel throughout the country to learn about and actively combat social justice and environmental issues. Trips concern issues such as homelessness, poverty, animals, healthcare, environment, and many more. Each trip offers participants a unique, hands-on opportunity to make a difference in the lives of both communities and individuals nationwide. In preparation for each trip, participants meet weekly to reflect on issues, promote awareness, volunteer within the Urbana-Champaign community, and to simply get to know one another prior to their week together.

  • Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages have been designated by the United States government as critical to U.S. National Security and can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 10 to August 2, 2019, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters. This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned 10 credits (completing your language requirement), you will have had fun!

For more information, visit our website at https://linguistics.illinois.edu/languages/summer-institute-languages-muslim-world.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at silmw@illinois.edu or reach out to Brennan Dell (dell3@illinois.edu).  We hope to see you this summer!

  • 10/20 Mansfield Foodmobile Volunteers needed

My name is Emily Stoerger and I am the Community Relations Coordinator at the Eastern Illinois Foodbank. We have an upcoming Foodmobile at the Northern Piatt Fire Protection District, 108 Washington St., Mansfield, IL on October 20th from 8:45 am - 12:15 pm. We need volunteers to be able to distribute food. I was wondering if you would be interested in volunteering at this site or helping us spread the word about this upcoming opportunity.

Foodmobiles are mobile food pantries focused on alleviating hunger among vulnerable populations. Foodmobiles target rural and under-served communities. Volunteers are needed to set up the food distribution area, hand out product to recipients, help recipients carry product to their cars, and clean up after distribution is complete. A short orientation will be provided by a Foodmobile Captain or EIF Staff member on-site at 8:45 am. This volunteer project requires volunteers to lift, bend and stand during distribution preparation and throughout the distribution period.

This is a great way to make a lot of impact in a short amount of time. Most of our Foodmobiles feed anywhere from 100-250 families in a single morning! These Foodmobiles will service all of Piatt County for the month of October but so far we only have a handful of volunteers to work the distribution. Without volunteers, these distributions are simply not possible.

If you are interested, you should sign up online here https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0844afac28a0fd0-eiffoodmobiles. If anyone has any questions they can contact me by email at estoerger@eifoodbank.org or by phone at 217-328-3663.

Our Foodmobiles help us get food to under-served locations and they would not be possible without you volunteers.
