UROP is a program designed to cultivate and support research partnerships between University of Illinois College of Engineering undergraduates and faculty members. All projects focus on NASA-related science and engineering research. We would like to invite highly-motivated sophomores, juniors and seniors as well May 2017 graduates to apply to participate in UROP.

  • Undergraduate Research Opportunities at ARI

    The Materials and Manufacturing Group at ARI is seeking up to two undergraduate researchers for this summer. The researchers would work with Dr. Dan Krogstad on a new Air Force funded research project. The positions would be for 40 hours a week for the summer. It is possible that the positions could extend into the school year at ~10 hours per week.

    The project involves developing materials and methods to produce 3D printed, ordered nanocomposites. Current self-assembled materials are limited because the ordering typically extends to a maximum of a few microns. To make macroscale ordered nanomaterials, other processing methods are needed. We are using direct ink writing to deposit micron sized beads of materials into macroscale structures. The first position will work to explore the variable space in the development of these new materials. The second position will focus on optimizing the direct ink writing process for these materials.

    Position 1: Materials Development

    Duties and Responsibilities

    - Prepare new nanocomposite materials to determine the effects of variables on the materials structure and properties
    - Perform polymers characterization on the developed materials including rheological testing of resins, mechanical tensile testing, DSC, SEM, DLS, and/or SAXS
    - Effectively work in a team environment to solve research challenges

    Preferred Qualifications

    - Undergraduate student in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, bioengineering or related engineering disciplines
    - Basic understanding of polymer chemistry and materials properties
    - Experimental research experience in polymers synthesis and/or characterization/testing
    - Experience with polymers characterization equipment such as DMA, rheometer, DSC, SEM, DLS, and/or SAXS

    Position 2: Direct Ink Writing Optimization

    Duties and Responsibilities

    - Determine the capabilities and limitations of the direct ink printer with respect to a range of ink properties
    - Perform polymers characterization on the polymer inks and the printed materials including rheological testing of the resins, mechanical tensile testing of printed samples
    - Effectively work in a team environment to solve research challenges

    Preferred Qualifications

    - Undergraduate student in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, or related engineering disciplines
    - Background using CAD programs such as AutoDesk Fusion 360
    - Experimental research experience in polymer 3D printingExperience with polymer characterization equipment such as DMA, rheometer, and DSC

    The Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science  (E3S) combines a broad research and education approach to revolutionize two major fundamental components of digital information processing systems: the communications logic switch and the short-medium range communication of information between logic elements. 

    The 2017 E3S Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program will be from June 3 - August 5, 2017 with projects in exciting research areas: nanoelectronics, nanomechanics, nanophotonics, and nanomagnetics.

    The campus-wide Illinois Office of Undergradaute Research(OUR) sponsors the Undergraduate Research Certificate program. Undergradaute students whose academic experience is centered on research are encouraged to apply to receive a Certificate in Undergraduate Research.

    Project Description: Experimental investigation of an air-cooled condenser for power plants.  Lab is off-campus.  Tasks will include making basic modifications to the system, adjusting and measuring air velocities, and collecting data.   • Undergraduate Research Assistant Needed: Motion Strategy and Virtual Reality Laboratory

    Project Description: There are two possible projects - (i) designing and implementing robotic swarms with high-level specifications on their dynamics. The focus is on quantifying the sensing/actuation/computational requirements needed to generate different swarm dynamics. (ii) developing high-level, verifiable specification languages for the design and control of robotic systems, eventually contributing to ROS (Robot Operating System).

    The focus of both projects is on simple mobile robots for personal/household use.

    Project Description: Build and incorporate a Labview interface for the operation of an instrument, the Surface Force Apparatus. The interface must operate the components (camera, motors etc), provide relevant readings, and process/analyze data in real time. Side work will include assisting in operating the intrument for conducting experiments when necessary. Main focus however will be on building and finetuning the interface.

  • Undergraduate Research Assistant Needed: Civil and Environmental Engineering

    Project Description: 

    The research project aims to determine which farm field management techniques are best at mitigating agricultural nitrogen losses associated with fertilization. To accomplish this, we collect and analyze air, water, and soil samples from fields utilizing different field management (fertilization rates, tillage, and cover cropping).

    Requirements

    The student should be interested and capable of spending time in the field. Field duties will include carrying equipment; installing sampling systems; collecting air, water, and soil samples; and maintaining detailed field notes. The student will need to have at least one morning each week available to dedicate to field work.

  • Undergraduate Research Assistant Needed: Chemistry, Prof. Grubele's Lab

    Project Description: Polyaniline-based membranes: development, characterization and applications

    Doped polyaniline is probably the most popular electroconductive and redox active polymer. We have studied physicochemical properties of polyaniline membranes, and have demonstrated that it is possible to conduct transmembrane redox reactions between two aqueous solutions. Donor and acceptor of electrons are separated, they are not mixed, but still react, even at neutral pH. It means that the products do not have to be separated and purified after reaction.

    In addition, transport of electrons leads to the transmembrane voltage, which may be used in electrochemical redox sensors for biomedical, environmental and food applications. Paper covered with polyaniline becomes electroconductive, and may be used in bendable batteries. There are many other possible applications.

    This project is an excellent opportunity in gaining experience working with this new and interesting material. You will work in the Chemistry Department, in a lab of Professor Martin Gruebele under direct supervision of an experienced PhD, and will use a broad set of modern physicochemical methods, including spectroscopy and electrochemistry.

  • Undergraduate Research Assistant Needed: Airconditioning and Refrigeration Center

    Project Description: Project involves heat transfer and fluid dynamics study of refrigerants (like R32, R1234zeE) in microchannel tubes (tube with a hydraulic diameter at a scale of 1mm) by experiments and theoretical analysis. We are looking for students who are eager to enter a top graduate school or want to have research experiences. In particular, students who want to do modeling in fluid dynamics and heat transfer. Students will start with reading papers and will eventually analyze data. After analyzing the data, the student should be able to use the knowledge in fluid or heat transfer courses to build a model. Students are expected to summarize information for a conference paper-level report. The time scale and result depend on the student's input.

    - Mechanical Engineering or Theoretical and Applied Mechanics student

    Proficient in reading music notations in sheet musicGood at self-learning softwares, such as finale, MIDI formats, etc.
    Preferably junior or senior students. Freshmen and sophomores are also welcome to apply, if you can show strong expertise in math, CS or music
    Preferably with knowledge of basics about theory of tonal music
    Preferably with strong background in at least one of the following areas: artificial intelligence, machine learning, information theory, stochastic processes, music composition.

  • Undergraduate Assistant Needed - Automated Software Engineering Research Group

    Project Description:

    Android Programming: Our group is doing some research related to analyzing data collected from keyboard applications on Android. The undergraduate student's responsibility for this project will include browsing the most popular Android keyboard applications, compiling a list of unique features and then creating the Android keyboard application with selected features.

    Web programming: The undergraduate student will be working with the backend services that supports Code Hunt: (http://www.codehunt.com). The student's responsibility for this project will include exploring what applications (web or mobile) can be created by accessing the backend services that supports Code Hunt and/or exploring ways of improving existing applications such as Code Hunt that is already using backend services.

    The Udall Scholarship awards $7,000 to sophomores or juniors who are taking action to address environmental concerns and plan on a career related to the environment.  1) Sophomores and juniors who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents and who are committed to a career focused on the environment AND 2) Native American sophomores and juniors who are interested in tribal policy and health care are eligible to apply.  A successful applicant will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service.  

    The University of Illinois may nominate up to six students for the Udall Scholarship.

  • UCLA Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) & Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)

    1. Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

    The UCLA Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, supported by Amazon, will provide students who are typically underrepresented in engineering and computer science an opportunity to conduct innovative and cutting-edge research. The program will admit 20 students and will run from June 25 – August 19, 2023.

    The SURE @UCLA application will be open from January 16 – April 2, 2023.

    2. Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)

    The UCLA Summer Programs for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) is designed for students who wish to learn more about the graduate school experience and possibly pursue an academic career in teaching and research. The tentative dates for SPUR 2023 are June 26 to August 18 (8-week programs) and June 26 to September 1 (10-week programs).

  • UC Irvine Center for Complex and Active Materials Research Experiences for Undergraduates

    The CCAM Materials REU is an 8-week program with a focus on research to discover new materials and novel functionalities through structural design and molecular-scale control. CCAM REU program will support up to 18 participants in: (1) a one-week boot camp introducing fundamentals of MSE concepts to provide baseline knowledge to succeed on their REU project; (2)  design and execution of interdisciplinary materials research projects: (3) preparation for applying to advanced degree programs in the physical sciences and engineering; and 4) seminars and enrichment activities to build students’ skills to be successful in graduate programs.

    The UC Berkeley College of Engineering is hosting its sixth annual Engineering Preview Day, April 10-13, 2019. This 3 day event is for students who intend to pursue a PhD in engineering and plan to apply this coming fall. Preview Day provides students the opportunity to meet individually with engineering faculty in their discipline, socialize with Berkeley graduate students, network with campus research centers and Bay Area National Labs.     The annual International BioXFEL Conference brings together experts in a variety of fields (structural biology, physics, biochemistry, and more) to discuss the most recent advances in structural biology using X-ray Free Electron Lasers (XFELs).
