    Nearly all native seed dispersers have been extirpated from theisland of Guam, largely due to predation by the invasive Brown Treesnake. The Ecologyof Bird Loss Project (www.ecologyofbirdloss.org) aims to determine the full impact ofseed disperser loss on Guam’s forests – including impacts on individual species and toforest structure – and the potential for different dispersers, both native and non-native, torestore function. Our research examines the ecological role of seed dispersers throughcomparisons of dynamics on Guam to those on nearby islands (Rota and Saipan) wherebirds are present.

    Natural Areas Steward:Plan, schedule, and work independently on all aspects of on-going field projects related to property management and stewardship of state managed lands. These projects include, but are not limited to vegetation surveys, natural community restoration, habitat assessments and inventories for rare and listed flora and fauna, trails and infrastructure inventories, fencing, and boundary marking. This position requires an ability to travel throughout assigned work area and work irregular hours, evenings, and occasional week-ends.     National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) has regionally placed several grant funded Land Conservation Specialists (LCS and Specialist) and a Conservation Program Manager to target and implement relevant conservation programs aimed at reducing sediment and nutrient loading, and improving wildlife habitat in the Illinois and Kaskaskia River Basins in a coordinated effort. Under supervision of the Conservation Program Manager” the Land Conservation Specialists work with EPA, NRCS, USFWS, and IDNR to actively target Best Management Practices (BMPs) or conservation practices on private lands, using sound data; hiring and training of LCS and other related staff; and on special projects as they arise with NGRREC℠ partners. As time allows the Manager will serve as a backup to perform certain duties assigned to those in LCS roles if it would become necessary.

  • land & Shallow Lake Monitoring Seasonal Opportunity 2016

    The Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ Watershed Monitoring and Assessment Section is seeking three summer wetland monitoring assistants. The assistant will work with wetland monitoring biologists to identify, measure, collect, and record various types of biological, chemical and physical data from wetlands and shallow lakes located in Iowa. The objectives of this project are to assess the ecological condition of these systems related to statewide and federal initiatives to understand and improve water quality. Work will be performed primarily from late May to late August, with potentially flexible start / finish dates.

    The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) is seeking a Habitat Senior Project Assistant to assist the Project Coordinator in overseeing habitat strike team staff in utilizing common ecological restoration tools to establish and manage a suite of conservation practices. The primary purposes of the position will be to work with landowners to determine the best restoration or management practice application for the particular site and utilize the necessary tools to successfully accomplish the conservation goal while preparing students and practitioners to think at landscape scale levels as it pertains to conservation application. This position is part of a partnership between Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Illinois Recreational Access Program (IRAP) and Lewis and Clark Community College/ National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC).
