• New Fall Internship Options for Study Abroad in Rome

  Take advantage of the extended deadline (April 30th) for the Sustainable Italian Food Systems study abroad program in Rome, Italy.  Illinois Abroad & Global Exchange (IAGE) has also added additional internship options for students who enroll for the Fall 2018 term.  Students can earn 3 LAS 300-level credits for an optional, customized internship in conjunction with earning Illinois credit for classes taken abroad for 13 or 16 total credits for the Fall semester.  Included in the program is a three-week field trip to northern and southern Italy where students will have the opportunity to participate in class-led excursions to regional farms and wineries.  They will also learn about Italy’s sustainable food culture by doing research projects and participating in international conferences and events.  This program is a great opportunity for students to earn credit toward their degree, while also gaining practical experience for their future career!

  The Family Resiliency Center is currently accepting applications for the HDFS 494: STRONG Kids undergraduate research course.  

  The STRONG Kids Research Program provides a unique, team-based, hands-on research experience working with over 450 families with children aged 12 months -5 years. 

  Applications are due April 23rd

  Students are eligible if they:

  Will have sophomore, junior, or senior class standing by Fall 2018 Are available to work regular hours on an assigned research project for 6-9 hours per week Have two, 3 hour blocks of time each week (including one evening) Are able to attend class every other week on Tuesdays from 4:30-6:00

  The purpose of these two-semester year-long supervised research course is to provide students with a first-hand experience working as part of a research team as well as to help them develop a working knowledge of the theory and applications of transdisciplinary approaches to obesity research. Students will be trained to conduct home visits with participants, collect biometric measurements, administer home food inventories and record findings.

  This course is divided into 3 components: Obesity prevention, professional development training, and applied research.

• SOAR After-school program now recruiting volunteer tutors

  SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources is a partnership between the University of Illinois and the International Prep Academy (IPA) in Champaign. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. The program is part of a growing national trend for dual language instruction in schools. Instruction in two languages has value for both emergent bilinguals and those fluent in English. The goal of dual language instruction is to promote positive cross-cultural understanding, bilingualism and biliteracy at a time when knowledge of language and culture confers power.

  SOAR is one of several programs available through the Center for Education in Small Urban Communities. The Center is an outreach arm in the College of Education.

  Opportunities for U of I students include:

  One-to-One Tutoring. SOAR tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15, with time for reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the children. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District the third week of classes. The SOAR program coordinator will provide the clearance form for the tutors. This opportunity is especially interesting to Illinois students who want to gain cross-cultural awareness and relationship skills.

  U of I students who would like to tutor with SOAR need to commit by September 11, 2018.

  A hot topic in legal education is the recent decision by 26 law schools to accept a GRE or LSAT score. What should prospective law students know about the GRE versus the LSAT? Join us as Ms. Jennifer Kott, Director of Admissions at the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, shares details about how her office uses the GRE in the law school admission process. This session will cover: Why the GRE is now being accepted by law schools; how the GRE differs from the LSAT; how law school admissions staff evaluate GRE scores versus LSAT scores; advice on how to decide which exam to take; and communicating with law school admissions offices.

  The Gilman International Scholarship Program provides awards of $5,000 (plus up to a $3,000 supplement for critical languages) for U.S. citizen undergraduate students to pursue summer, semester, or academic-year study abroad opportunities in other countries. • Mary Ramier Grant for Undergraduate Women

  The Mary Ramier Grant is set up to inspire undergraduate women to develop as successful leaders, activists, and professionals.  Mary Ramier, a 1923 graduate of the University of Illinois, was an attorney and activist from Indianapolis, IN.   She was remembered for tackling problems in her Irvington neighborhood, including a petition drive that led to much-needed urban renovation.  She also worked at the national level as an attorney and officer for the Mortar Board National Senior Women’s Honorary.

  The grant will be awarded competitively and can be used to

  Support research research travel research materials such as books, recording equipment, etc. conference travel Creative projects such as, but not limited to zines films plays Field trips that are related to gender and women’s studies Other activities that promote the advancement of women 

   

  Awards are usually between $50 and $500.  The Gender and Women’s Studies awards committee will determine the amount and number of awards per year based on the merit of individual proposals and financial need.  Money will not be awarded for tuition costs or living expenses.   

  Requirements: All undergraduate women in good standing are eligible to apply.  Applicants should fill out an application form, and include the name of a faculty member who might be called for reference.

  Chris Capozziello is an awarded photojournalist who is coming on 2/6 to speak on his life and relationship with his twin brother with a disability. There will also be several other students with disabilities speaking about their experiences and relationships with their non-disabled siblings.   "Someone once said, "Siblings will take different paths and life may separate them, but they will forever be bonded by having begun their journey in the same boat."   How is this quote lived out among  siblings when one has a disability?  How is the twin relationship impacted when one twin has a disability and the other does not?  Come spend time being part of an event exploring these unique relationships with those who live them!  Chris Capozziello, award winning photojournalist, and University of Illinois students with disabilities will share experiences, thoughts, and feelings as they explore a topic that is seldom discussed.   This event will be a “family” discussion – around the kitchen table with Chris and some of University of Illinois students with disabilities – some who are the twin with a disability and who have a twin without.

  Chris is an American photojournalist whose work has been published and exhibited worldwide. Since he first picked up a camera as a teenager, Chris has been drawn to photographing his twin brother Nick, who has cerebral palsy. The time Chris spends looking through his camera at Nick has forced him to ask questions about suffering and faith and why anyone is born with a disability. As family photographs, the images of Nick were not originally made to be shared, but they have since been widely distributed and are the subject of Chris’s first monograph, The Distance Between Us."

  On February 8, The Career Center will be starting their Health Professions Wednesdays Series for the spring semester. The first HPW is titled, Helping Professions: Beyond the Medical Model. They chose this topic because they meet with students who want to work in health fields and “help” people, but might not be aware of other professions besides physicians, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, etc. Or students have shadowed specific fields and realized they do not like some of the responsibilities.

  They will be having a panel of four professionals from the following fields: Social Work, Child Life Specialist, Dietetics and Genetic Counseling.

  It is scheduled for February 8 at 4:00 pm and will take place in The Career Center Interview Suite at 616 E Green Street, Room 213.

• National Disability Day of Mourning Vigil

  As part of National Disability Day of Mourning, Social Justice and Leadership Education intern Kathleen Downes, the Women’s Resources Center, and a team of people fighting for disability justice at the University of Illinois will hold a vigil on March 1 from 6-8pm to honor people with disabilities murdered by family members and caregivers. It will be held in 2050 SDRP. The event is wheelchair accessible and all are welcome. We will be reading the names of the victims, voicing our grief, and fighting for the day that there no more names on the list of the dead. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) has compiled a list of more than 950 such murders that have occurred over the last 38 years, though the number is likely higher than that which is reported.

  In hosting this event at the University of Illinois, we seek to send the message that disabled lives are worth living and that disability is not a justification for violence. Please join us in celebrating the lives of the victims and telling our community and the world that these crimes must end. Violence against people with disabilities and damaging cultural attitudes that justify it are not acceptable.
