SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources is a partnership between the University of Illinois and the International Prep Academy (IPA) in Champaign. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. The program is part of a growing national trend for dual language instruction in schools. Instruction in two languages has value for both emergent bilinguals and those fluent in English. The goal of dual language instruction is to promote positive cross-cultural understanding, bilingualism and biliteracy at a time when knowledge of language and culture confers power.

SOAR is one of several programs available through the Center for Education in Small Urban Communities. The Center is an outreach arm in the College of Education.

Opportunities for U of I students include:

One-to-One Tutoring. SOAR tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15, with time for reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the children. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District the third week of classes. The SOAR program coordinator will provide the clearance form for the tutors. This opportunity is especially interesting to Illinois students who want to gain cross-cultural awareness and relationship skills.

U of I students who would like to tutor with SOAR need to commit by September 11, 2018.

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.    

This summer SILMW will take place from June 15 to August 8, 2020, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters.This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!  

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned up to 10 credits, you will have had fun!

A suicide attempt survivor is on a mission to find fellow survivors and document their stories of unguarded courage, insight, pain, and humor. Along the way, she discovers a national community rising to transform personal struggles into action. THE S WORD chronicles her journey and these survivors in a powerful feature documentary that puts a human face to a topic that has long been stigmatized and buried with the lives it has claimed. Suicide affects people of all ages, races, faiths, ethnicities, gender presentations, sexual orientations, professions, and so much more. Champaign-Urbana Public Health District is looking for your help in providing self-care items to those in need. Every Monday from 11am-1pm, we park our mobile clinic outside the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen to hand out socks, free personal hygiene products and other necessities.

We also distribute items during our other outreach services.

Our 2019 theme is “I ASK” based on this year's national #SAAM2019 theme, and is built collaboratively across campus and community partners, to declare that to truly end violence and abuse we must be personally committed to being change agents in our every day lives.

This month, take action — attend an event, workshop, or training — and let’s talk about how we can support survivors and help end sexual violence. We have a host of events planned to support survivors, deconstruct social norms, explore consent, and promote healthy sexuality.

Take advantage of the extended deadline (April 30th) for the Sustainable Italian Food Systems study abroad program in Rome, Italy.  Illinois Abroad & Global Exchange (IAGE) has also added additional internship options for students who enroll for the Fall 2018 term.  Students can earn 3 LAS 300-level credits for an optional, customized internship in conjunction with earning Illinois credit for classes taken abroad for 13 or 16 total credits for the Fall semester.  Included in the program is a three-week field trip to northern and southern Italy where students will have the opportunity to participate in class-led excursions to regional farms and wineries.  They will also learn about Italy’s sustainable food culture by doing research projects and participating in international conferences and events.  This program is a great opportunity for students to earn credit toward their degree, while also gaining practical experience for their future career!

The School of Social Work will be offering two Tehcnology overview sessions on Tuesday, August 28th, from 12:30 to 1:30 and on Wednesday, August 29th from 12-1 PM.

The University of Illinois is filled with technology resources that are at your disposal that you might not even know exist. Additionally, many students don't realize what other resources might exist outside of the University to help with studies. This seminar will cover a wide array of topics that include getting access to free software to "Where can I save my data?" to "How can I keep myself on task while using a computer?"

The Value of Undergraduate Research Workshop (VURW) - January 19, 2018

During this workshop, we will discuss the importance of conducting research as an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois. This will include a discussion of how engaging in research can impact your career development, and how to communicate this value effectively. Students will leave the workshop with (1) a better understanding of how undergraduate research can benefit you both now and following graduation, and (2) an idea of how to effectively communicate the value of research experiences to future employers. This workshop is a collaboration between the Office of Undergraduate Research and The Career Center.

Getting Started in Undergraduate Research Workshop (GSIRW) - Multiple Dates Available

During this workshop, we will discuss the various forms of undergraduate research that take place on campus, guide students to develop a plan of action to locate research opportunities on campus, and discuss ways to contact faculty research mentors. Students will leave the workshop with (1) a better understanding of undergraduate research and how it takes place on our campus, (2) increased confidence to contact faculty research mentors, and (3) a list of faculty mentors to contact.

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is currently accepting applications for the Research Support Grant (RSG). This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks (i.e., winter break and summer terms, NOT regular semester living expenses), and materials or other ancillary costs.  We hope that this competition will both broaden and deepen the types of research being conducted by undergraduate students on campus, and that the recipients are able to use this opportunity as a way of engaging with their fields.

Division of General Studies – 2017 Summer Registration Computer Lab Peer Advisors needed!

The Division of General Studies is seeking students to aid with summer registration by helping Academic Advisors assist incoming students with registering for classes for the fall semester. Computer Lab Peer Advisors will:

Assist students with registering for fall classes in UI Integrate Self Service Assist students in identifying appropriate General Education courses

A successful candidate must be available weekdays from May 24 & 25, and May 30 to July 7, 2017 from 1:00pm – 4:30pm (approximately 15-20 hours per week). There is also a mandatory training that is scheduled for May 15 & 16, 2017 from 9:00am – 4:30pm.  There will also be the possibility of working August 23 & 24.

The pay for this position is $8.25 an hour.

The Critical Language Scholarship, provided by the U.S. Department of State, is a fully-funded, intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for undergraduate and graduate students.  A list of eligible languages is available here.

The CLS institutes cover one academic year of university-level language coursework in 8 to 10 weeks over the summer, and include cultural programming, local language partners, and excursions. In my capacity as chair of the School's Diversity Committee, Nancy contacted me to ask about the possibility of a collection box for donations to help communities recently devastated by the hurricanes in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. I have asked Nancy to please proceed with setting up a donations box at our School.

Nancy is also a member of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A.). This group created "the #UIUCAyuda campaign to galvanize various organizations on campus to hold fundraising events and supply drives". From September 27th through October 21st, anyone who would like to make a monetary contribution can do so through the YouCaring relief organization. The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is looking for motivated and personable first- and second-year undergraduates who are excited to introduce and support peers through the Illinois research experience. If you have participated in a research project, be it through coursework, assisting faculty, research staff, or graduate students, or conducting a project of your own, you can become an Illinois Undergraduate Research Ambassador and help other students along their research journeys.  Ideal candidates should demonstrate at least one semester (or 1 full summer semester) of engagement in research/creative inquiry and exhibit excellent communication skills. Capturing and Understanding Emotions in Text

Analyzing data to capture various emotions is very important for a wide number of applications, such as consumer engagement, experience in healthcare, advertising, etc. Also important is exposure to, or strong motivation to learn about emotions in text communication. This undergraduate opportunity will be part of a larger project in our lab that investigates new and better ways for people to interact with machines as well as with one another.

The selected candidate will:
-Not be expected to have previous experience
-Work with a faculty mentor and/or graduate students with experience in Language and Emotion.
-Annotate/code textual data to capture important affective information;
-Learn about the challenges and opportunities of processing user-generated data (i.e., social media) and learn about the role of emotions in human-computer and human-human interaction.

The Mary Ramier Grant is set up to inspire undergraduate women to develop as successful leaders, activists, and professionals.  Mary Ramier, a 1923 graduate of the University of Illinois, was an attorney and activist from Indianapolis, IN.   She was remembered for tackling problems in her Irvington neighborhood, including a petition drive that led to much-needed urban renovation.  She also worked at the national level as an attorney and officer for the Mortar Board National Senior Women’s Honorary.

The grant will be awarded competitively and can be used to

Support research research travel research materials such as books, recording equipment, etc. conference travel Creative projects such as, but not limited to zines films plays Field trips that are related to gender and women’s studies Other activities that promote the advancement of women 

Awards are usually between $50 and $500.  The Gender and Women’s Studies awards committee will determine the amount and number of awards per year based on the merit of individual proposals and financial need.  Money will not be awarded for tuition costs or living expenses.   

Requirements: All undergraduate women in good standing are eligible to apply.  Applicants should fill out an application form, and include the name of a faculty member who might be called for reference.

During this workshop, we will discuss the fundamentals of proposal writing, guiding students to formulate successful research projects and explain their research in a concise and compelling manner that is understandable to a general audience. Students will leave the workshop with (1) basic knowledge about research proposals and their structure, (2) tactics and tools to write successful research statements, and (3) a list of resources for assistance in the writing process.
