  • Fisheries Technician (invasive carp; summer 2023), UIUC Dept. of NRES (Champaign, IL; due Apr. 1)

    A summer field technician is needed to assist with applied research quantifying mechanisms influencing the movement and spread of invasive carp in the Illinois River. The technician will assist a graduate student in the collection of samples in the field and will also conduct laboratory analyses of collected samples.  This position will be 40 hours per week over the summer and will be based in Champaign, Illinois.

  • Research Experience for Undergraduates (summer 2023), The Damschen Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Madison, WI; open until filled)

    The Damschen Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking paid Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) student(s) for summer 2023. The program covers all research and travel expenses and supports 6 to 12 weeks of full-time work from approximately May through August 2023 with a $3,600-7,200 stipend depending on the availability of the student(s) and the duration of work. The selected student(s) will participate in collaborative, hypothesis-driven research and engage in a range of plant ecology research topics. Outcomes include: (a) experience generating and testing hypotheses, collecting and analyzing data, and summarizing findings, (b) training on field and lab safety and scientific ethics, (c) development of marketable skills such as plant identification, survey methods, and data collection protocols, and (d) networking with professors, post-doctoral researchers, and other students.

    Description: The Center for Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences at Eastern Illinois University isseeking several seasonal fisheries interns and technicians to assist with general field andlaboratory work associated with graduate research projects. Current projects include invasivecarp reproductive ecology, stream fish community monitoring, and sportfish populationdynamics on the Wabash River. Field work duties will include assisting graduate students with avariety of fisheries surveys, recording biological and environmental data, and maintaining fieldequipment. Fisheries surveys will be conducted on a variety of streams, rivers (Wabash andIllinois Rivers), and reservoirs throughout Central Illinois. Surveys will include bargeelectrofishing, electric seining, larval fish sampling, boat electrofishing, hoop netting, collectionof water quality samples, and macroinvertebrate sampling. Laboratory work will includeprocessing larval fish samples, assisting with water quality measurements, assisting with streamfish identification, assisting with fish aging techniques, and maintaining a clean and organizedlab space.     The 10-week AquEOUS fellowship is an USDA funded Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates (REEU) program which offers undergraduate students from around the nation a unique opportunity to combine traditional ecological knowledge from indigenous science with STEM concepts from western science to solve real-world problems in aquaculture at the University of Maine’s world class aquaculture facilities.     POSITION SUMMARY: Our ecological restoration team cares for natural areas mostly in the northernCook County (Chicago region), positively impacting habitat and open space.     The Illinois Natural History Survey at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking 2 or more Field Technicians to work with Survey botanists to conduct statewide monitoring of forest, wetland, and grassland vegetation for the Critical Trends Assessment Program (CTAP).  Duties include: 1) assist with field surveys of plants in forests, wetlands, and grasslands throughout Illinois, 2) share extensive driving responsibilities to and from field sites, 3) conduct sweep samples of insects in the field, 4) enter data collected in the field into a Microsoft Access database and 5) assist with other office and field work as needed. This position in based in Champaign, Illinois.

    As a nonprofit, volunteer organization we look to students to help manage the clinic and fulfill our mission between school years.

    Volunteers work under the supervision of the Medical Director, the Wildlife Medical Clinic veterinary interns, and two student managers. This team is responsible for the intake, care and release of all animals admitted to the clinic. Summer student volunteers also have the opportunity to help run the operations of the clinic. Groups can vary in size but will be around twelve to sixteen members.

    The RMEF Wildlife Leadership Awards (WLA) scholarship program was established in 1991 to"recognize, encourage and promote leadership among future wildlife management professionals."The awards are presented to undergraduate wildlife students, and currently provide a $5,000 scholarship and a one-year membership to RMEF.

    The awards include the Torstenson Family Endowment WLA, established in memory of BobTorstenson (1950-2002) and the Gerald L. (Jerry) Turpin WLA, established in memory of Gerald L.(Jerry) Turpin (1977-2001). Recipients of both awards are selected from the same pool of applicants.
