  • Pre-Law Advising Updates

Spring Registration. We encourage pre-law students to meet with their major/departmental advisor to discuss course selection. Due to our volume of appointments in October and November related to the law school application process, we are not able to individually meet with every pre-law student to discuss course selection. We encourage pre-law students to check our blog here, where we will post suggested (optional) course options next week. We have also posted general information on course selection both in the Pre-Law Handbook and over on our Compass page—which can each be accessed on our Pre-Law website. Thank you for helping us direct students to these resources.

Grade Replacement. A new registration cycle means that students will be considering their grade replacement options. We’ve once again posted a guide to Grade Replacement and Law School on our blog here. Please feel free to refer to this or to share it with interested students.

Upcoming October pre-law programming: All fall events are listed on our calendar here

The last 15 minutes will be set aside for Q&A so that individual questions can be addressed.

Perfecting Your Personal Statement & Resume for Law School—Monday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 pm in 514 Illini Union Bookstore Building. The personal statement is one of the most difficult yet powerful elements of the law school application. Join us for this workshop, which will cover what the personal statement is, how to prepare for writing it, and some tips and suggestions for making it reflect an applicant's strengths. We will also discuss how the personal statement and resume can complement each other to create a stronger law school application. Each session is the same, so select the one that best suits your schedule. Please register here so that we can ensure enough seating and materials for everyone.

  • Hurricane Relief Effort at the School of Social Work

Nancy Perez-Flores is a student in the School of Social Work as well as a student member on the School's Diversity Committee. In my capacity as chair of the School's Diversity Committee, Nancy contacted me to ask about the possibility of a collection box for donations to help communities recently devastated by the hurricanes in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. I have asked Nancy to please proceed with setting up a donations box at our School.

Nancy is also a member of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A.). This group created "the #UIUCAyuda campaign to galvanize various organizations on campus to hold fundraising events and supply drives". From September 27th through October 21st, anyone who would like to make a monetary contribution can do so through the YouCaring relief organization. Donations can be made to the relief fund by clicking on the link to their webpage below:

  • The Career Center Summer Break Job Shadow Opportunities

    What is it?

The Summer Break Job Shadow Program is an opportunity for students to have a one or half-day company visit over Summer Break with an employer or alum, helping them explore a career field, engage with a company of interest, establish a professional network, and foster potential opportunities. Employers use this program to promote their company and help identify future interns and full-time hires!  The program is open to students graduating in December 2017 or later (so no graduating seniors).  Resume submissions take place from April 17 through April 21.

Students should visit go.illinois.edu/SummerBreakJobShadow for more details on the program, including downloading the student program guide.

What job shadow opportunities are currently posted?

For your benefit, I’ve attached the list of opportunities that can be found on I-Link – there are currently 20 unique job shadows, but most are open to bringing in larger groups of students.

    How do students apply?

To see what is available and apply, students should sign into their I-Link account and click on "Search Jobs (all Jobs)" under the "Shortcuts" tab on the right side of the screen.  From there, use the "Advanced Search" tab and click on "Show Me...Job Shadow Listings".  Students will then see the 20 job shadow opportunities and can click on each one individually to see the details and date that they are being held.  Students are welcome to apply to as many that interest them to improve their chances at a job shadow; however, they will only be “matched” with one.  The application period is open until Friday, April 21st.

  • SOAR After-school program now recruiting volunteer tutors

SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources is a partnership between the University of Illinois and the International Prep Academy (IPA) in Champaign. The program provides after-school enrichment for Latina/o bilingual youth. Children in grades 2-5 benefit from tutoring in reading and homework followed by social activities. The program is part of a growing national trend for dual language instruction in schools. Instruction in two languages has value for both emergent bilinguals and those fluent in English. The goal of dual language instruction is to promote positive cross-cultural understanding, bilingualism and biliteracy at a time when knowledge of language and culture confers power.

SOAR is one of several programs available through the Center for Education in Small Urban Communities. The Center is an outreach arm in the College of Education.

Opportunities for U of I students include:

One-to-One Tutoring. SOAR tutoring is scheduled for TWR from 2:00-3:15, with time for reading, homework assistance, and social activities with the children. Illinois students are paired with the same child for the semester and may choose to volunteer more than one day per week. Spanish-speaking skills are not necessary in order to participate. Tutors will need to complete a background check through the Champaign School District the third week of classes. The SOAR program coordinator will provide the clearance form for the tutors. This opportunity is especially interesting to Illinois students who want to gain cross-cultural awareness and relationship skills.

U of I students who would like to tutor with SOAR need to commit by September 11, 2018.

  • Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP @ UI)

Now in its fourth year of collaboration, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) and the Graduate College offer undergraduate students with little or no research experience the opportunity to assist advanced graduate students (those who have completed all coursework requirements and are in the dissertation research stage) with their research projects. Through a one-on-one research experience with their graduate student mentor, undergraduate students will have the opportunity to learn what it means to do research, create knowledge, and produce scholarship. Selected undergraduate students will begin work with their mentors in Spring 2019.

Undergraduate students will (1) attend regular weekly class meetings (GC 295, Introduction to Undergraduate Research, 3 credit hours) with OUR/Grad College instructors; and (2) work one-on-one with their graduate mentors, an average of 5-6 hours per week. As part of the course requirement, students will complete a final project, consisting of a poster, to be presented during “Undergraduate Research Week,” an annual event sponsored by OUR.

If you have any questions about the application process, the office will be holding informational meetings on Monday September 24, Monday October 1, and Monday October 8, from 3-3:50pm in Lincoln Hall Room 1065. Get tips on creating a good statement of interest, why you should participate, and get your questions answered.

Please note, the Office of Undergraduate Research does not provide funds for conference travel for attendance only; grants are meant for students who will present their work. The deadline for applications is October 4 at 11:59pm. For details, eligibility requirements, and link to the application please visit: http://go.illinois.edu/OUR_CTG

Undergraduate Research Support Grant - This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks (i.e., winter break and summer terms, NOT regular semester living expenses), and materials or other ancillary costs.  We hope that this competition will both broaden and deepen the types of research being conducted by undergraduate students on campus, and that the recipients are able to use this opportunity as a way of engaging with their fields. The deadline for applications is October 19 at 11:59pm. For details, eligibility requirements, and link to the application please visit: http://go.illinois.edu/OUR_RSG

  • Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month! This year, we’re asking Champaign-Urbana to Take A Stand and actively work to end dating and domestic violence. Dating and domestic violence can include any form of psychological, emotional, verbal, physical, financial, or sexual abuse. In fact, more than half of people who have been physically abused, sexually abused, or stalked by a dating partner, first experienced abuse between the ages of 11 and 24. Join us in activities and events throughout the month to become involved in eliminating violence and abuse in our relationships, our homes and in our community! Go to https://oiir.illinois.edu/womens-center/domestic-violence-awareness-month to see a list of events and activities.

  • Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages have been designated by the United States government as critical to U.S. National Security and can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 10 to August 2, 2019, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters. This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned 10 credits (completing your language requirement), you will have had fun!

For more information, visit our website at https://linguistics.illinois.edu/languages/summer-institute-languages-muslim-world.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at silmw@illinois.edu or reach out to Brennan Dell (dell3@illinois.edu).  We hope to see you this summer!

  • "The S Word" Documentary

A suicide attempt survivor is on a mission to find fellow survivors and document their stories of unguarded courage, insight, pain, and humor. Along the way, she discovers a national community rising to transform personal struggles into action. THE S WORD chronicles her journey and these survivors in a powerful feature documentary that puts a human face to a topic that has long been stigmatized and buried with the lives it has claimed. Suicide affects people of all ages, races, faiths, ethnicities, gender presentations, sexual orientations, professions, and so much more. THE S WORD skillfully weaves stories of survivors from a cross section of America including LGBT, African American and Asian American communities, who candidly share their profoundly emotional stories of trauma, mental health challenges, survival and advocacy. The film’s narrative flows organically from one story to the next, starting with personal moments and building emotional momentum before widening out to show how their journeys are driving the national movement to take the “S” word from unthinkable to preventable.Trailer: vimeo.com/251373186 theswordmovie.com
