    The Fulbright UK Summer Institute Programmes offer current 1st and 2nd year students a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the study of British academics and culture. Students will take part in research, collaboration, presentation, and cultural events at an esteemed British university.     The Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows Program is a highly selective summer institute for rising college juniors, offering unparalleled learning and networking opportunities at the home of America's first president outside our nation's capital.

    Fully Funded Summer Leadership Program:  Students spend six weeks living and learning at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Transportation, meals and a $3,000 stipend are provided.  The Mount Vernon Leadership Fellows program combines lessons from George Washington's life, student leadership development, and a capstone project to promote civic engagement.  Students meet with successful professionals and participate in unique experiences in our nation's capital.

  • Register for HackCulture by 1/20/19

      

    HackCulture is an interdisciplinary student hackathon that will run from February 2 to March 1, 2019. Each weekend will include a different team-based mini-challenge that will encourage participants to learn new skills. The last week will be spent working on a final project, to be presented and judged at the March 1st finale. The goal of HackCulture is to make working with data more accessible to all, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and help to build a community of peers and mentors across campus.

    Students from the humanities and social sciences, who may be left out of “traditional” hackathons, are highly encouraged to attend but all the students are welcome. Registration is due by January 20; more information can be found at the website https://publish.illinois.edu/hackculture/.

    Whether or not you will ever become a union member, issues related to organized labor have direct impact on all workers – who may also experience more subtle effects.  Understanding broad history and upcoming changes through recent court cases will provide context for important knowledge and tools.

    Robert Bruno is a Professor of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and he is the Director of the Labor Education Program.  His research focuses on organized labor, workers’ rights, and political and economic trends related to these issues, as he probes the balance of power between large corporations and working-class Americans, the role of the workplace in civil society, the political power of labor organizations, and ways that unions promote worker interests.

    It’s the start of the Major League Baseball season!  And we will learn more about the dynamics of the collision between the ball and bat and the aerodynamics of a baseball in flight – including new technologies that enable the study of these topics with unprecedented precision.

    Alan Nathan has been engaged in this baseball research for over two decades, and he is regularly consulted about this work by national organizations.  Professor Nathan has served on the editorial board of the journal Sports Engineering and has served on panels advising Major League Baseball, the Amateur Softball Association, the NCAA, and USA Baseball.   His previous research focused on the field of intermediate energy nuclear physics, particularly the study of the quark structure of the nucleon, using the Compton scattering reaction as a probe.

    The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is now accepting submissions for the 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS), set for Thursday, April 18. The URS is the signature event of Undergraduate Research Week (April 14-20), and brings together students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus, as well as corporate partners and sponsors, to learn more about undergraduate research and its potential to change the world. Over the course of the day, students present their work in concurrent oral and poster presentations (including creative performances), the breadth and scope of which reflect not only the wide range of academic disciplines at the University of Illinois, but also speak to the caliber of our undergraduates.

  • IPRH–Andrew W. Mellon Undergraduate Internships in Environmental Humanities apps due 3/1/19

      

    The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH), with funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, is looking for undergraduate interns to work with its Environmental Humanities research group for the academic year 2019–2020.  Environmental Humanities is environmental studies from a humanistic standpoint. Environmental Humanities pulls from different movements (environmental philosophy, environmental history, ecocriticism, cultural geography, anthropology, and others) to study the relationship between humans and non-human nature, past and present. The IPRH-Mellon Environmental Humanities Research Group is composed of professors, post-doctoral scholars, graduate students, and undergraduates from different disciplines who are united by their desire to understand the human place in nature, as well as to examine critically the way people make meaning of it.

    The research group seeks three undergraduate interns who will work with the group on their seminars, workshops, and programs. Interns will also work with the research group director, Professor Bob Morrissey, to develop their own research projects as well as a research symposium for undergraduates at the end of the spring semester.

    The position is open to current University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign undergraduate students in good academic standing. Ideally, applicants for the internship should anticipate being juniors or seniors for the year of the internship and should demonstrate some familiarity with and/or curiosity about the intersections between sciences and the humanities. All applicants, regardless of years to graduation, should argue the case for their readiness/preparation for the opportunity in their application materials.

    Terms of Internship – Duties of the yearlong internship include:

    Attendance at weekly research-group meeting (9 am to 11 am on Fridays);Weekly meeting with research group director to talk over research projects;Assisting with research group workshops and program activities; andOrganizing an undergraduate research symposium.

    Interns will work approximately 10 to 11 hours per week, paid at the rate of $15.75 per hour (up to $5000/year), and will have up to $600 to support their research.   • LaFrae Sci is In-Residence at Unit One/Allen Hall until 2/7

      

    LaFrae Sci is an internationally sought composer, drummer, and educator who teaches at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and is also a founding teaching member of the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls in NYC. As a Cultural Ambassador for the US State Department, she has taught master classes and performed in more than 30 countries. Her organization, Groove Diplomacy, creates youth engagement programs internationally, using musical expression as a vehicle to empower, ignite, heal, and create mutual understanding. LaFrae’s band, Sonic Black, is an educational collective that creates interactive presentations focusing on the genius of the Black American musical contribution to US and world history.

    All events are free and open to the public and take place at Allen Hall, 1005 W. Gregory Drive, Urbana, unless noted otherwise.

  • OUR Research Support Grant information

      

    Research Support Grant (RSG):  This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks (i.e., winter break and summer terms, NOT regular semester living expenses), and materials or other ancillary costs. The Office of Undergraduate Research's goal for this competition is to both broaden and deepen the types of research being conducted by undergraduate students on campus, and that the recipients are able to use this opportunity as a way of engaging with their fields.

    Green Onion Asian Market Manager, Lucy Lee, will be teaching “Intro to Korean Cooking : Bulgogi” at Japan House for anyone who loves Korean food and has an interest in Korean cuisine!  During this 3-class series, students will learn to make a basic, but favorite Korean dish, Bulgogi (Korean-style marinated beef) while exploring the ingredients and cooking techniques that make Korean food so invigorating and delicious.  Classes are hands-on, coupled with demonstration-style teaching. Everyone is situated at their own cutting board/cooking station around a large kitchen island that accommodates the whole class (12 people max). You will work together as a group with the chef. Classes focus on knife skills, preparing ingredients for cooking, and an opportunity to participate in a firsthand experience of authentic Korean cooking.  At the end of the class, you will receive a complete recipe packet, and enjoy a sit-down meal with your classmates.

    Classes are designed for beginners to professionals, and you do not need to sign up for all 3 classes. Classes start promptly at 5:30, and all materials will be provided. Students are encouraged to wear an apron and have hair pulled back.
