    Research Support Grant (RSG):  This grant provides students from all disciplines with the funds necessary to conduct research or creative projects during the academic year both on and off campus (including summer terms). Awards will be up to $2,000 and are meant to cover research travel costs, living expenses incurred during academic breaks (i.e., winter break and summer terms, NOT regular semester living expenses), and materials or other ancillary costs. The Office of Undergraduate Research's goal for this competition is to both broaden and deepen the types of research being conducted by undergraduate students on campus, and that the recipients are able to use this opportunity as a way of engaging with their fields.

  • One Book One Campus presents “The Other Wes Moore” on 12/8/15 at 7:00 p.m.

    One Book One Campus:

    Each year, a panel of key university representatives compiles a list of books for the Chancellor to select from and the university community subsequently turns into a giant book club.  Programs and curriculum are built around the selection, lectures are held and discussion groups ignite exciting dialogue.  The featured book becomes a touchstone that provides individuals with learning opportunities and promotes a sense of fellowship as the community reads together.

    Whether or not you will ever become a union member, issues related to organized labor have direct impact on all workers – who may also experience more subtle effects.  Understanding broad history and upcoming changes through recent court cases will provide context for important knowledge and tools.

    Robert Bruno is a Professor of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and he is the Director of the Labor Education Program.  His research focuses on organized labor, workers’ rights, and political and economic trends related to these issues, as he probes the balance of power between large corporations and working-class Americans, the role of the workplace in civil society, the political power of labor organizations, and ways that unions promote worker interests.

    NCSA’s Students Pushing Innovation (SPIN) internship program will host the SPIN Open House on April 9 from 3-5 pm in the NCSA Atrium to promote the academic year 2019-20 internship projects. Students will have an opportunity to meet with SPIN mentors who are NCSA researchers and faculty affiliates and learn more about the projects.

     SPIN academic year session:  Program dates: August 26, 2019 - May 6, 2020, work 5 hours/week for 16 weeks each semester.  All NCSA SPIN interns are paid $12.50/hour.  Any U of I undergraduate student in good academic standing; no restriction on year of study or major, and international students are eligible.

  • Image of Research Competition submission deadline is 3/27/18

    The Image of Research is a multidisciplinary competition celebrating the diversity and breadth of undergraduate student research at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. All undergraduate students are invited to submit entries consisting of an image and brief text that articulates how the image relates to the research. Entries will be judged by a multidisciplinary panel for:

    Connection between image, text, and research Originality Visual Impact

  • ALL SENIORS: 2019 Homecoming Court Applications due 9/9/19

    To become a member of the 2019 UI Homecoming Court, applications must be submitted by Monday, September 9 by 5 p.m. (go to http://homecoming.illinois.edu/ and click “Homecoming Court”) -- read all the information regarding the application process and expectations.

    Candidates must have earned at least 90 hours with a minimum grade-point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.  Students who are selected for 2nd round interviews must be available for the interview from 9/16-9/19.  Individuals chosen to be members of the Homecoming Court must attend a MANDATORY meeting on 10/1, and the Homecoming Court is requested to attend a number of activities from 10/13-10/19.  Members of the Homecoming Court will receive a limited number of 10/19 game tickets. There is no guarantee at the number of tickets that will be available to the court. In addition, court members traditionally receive invitations to other Homecoming festivities, so keep your calendars free!

  • Submit works by 2/25/19 for 2019 Creative Writing Awards

    2019 Undergraduate Creative Writing Awards deadline is Noon, Monday, February 25, 2019.  The English Department announces its annual undergraduate literary competitions in Short Fiction and Poetry. Depending on available funding, there will be 2-3 prizes in Fiction and 2-3 in Poetry this year. Past prizes have ranged from $100 to $1000.     Contest rules are as follows:

    Short Fiction:  no contestant may submit more than one unpublished story (7500 words, maximum length)

    Only UIUC undergraduate students are eligible to compete. To be considered for a prize, submissions must adhere to the following rules. All submissions must be sent to the following email address: sdavenpo@illinois.edu. Depending on your entry (poetry or fiction), the subject line of your email message must read as follows: UNDERGRAD POETRY or UNDERGRAD FICTION (not both). If you enter in both categories (poetry and fiction), you will need to send separate emails. Your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, net id, status (undergrad), and UIN number must appear in the body of the email. Your fiction OR poetry entry is to be contained in one attachment (doc, docx, or rtf only), the name of which must be as follows: contest category followed by your last name, such as FICTIONJONES or POETRYJONES.     This week the UIUC National and International Scholarships Program office is holding scholarship meetings for juniors, seniors, and graduates students on campus.  If you are a recent UIUC alumnus, or currently overseas on a semester abroad program and are interested in learning more about one of these scholarships, please visit the website, or email topscholars@illinois.edu.     Intended for students from across the campus, Inside Scoop conversations invite Illinois undergraduates to engage with the exciting work conducted by scholars whose work helps us understand what it means to be human in a world of rapidly shifting global complexities.     Ocean Vuong is the author of Night Sky With Exit Wounds (Copper Canyon Press, 2016), winner of the 2016 Whiting Award. Vuong also has two chapbooks: No (YesYes, 2013) and Burnings (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2010). A Ruth Lilly fellow from the Poetry Foundation, Ocean has received honors and awards from Poets House, the Elizabeth George Foundation, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, the Academy of American Poets, and a Pushcart Prize.

    This event is co-sponsored by Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, Trowbridge Initiative in American Cultures, and Asian American Studies.

  • 9/27 deadline: David F. Prindable Undergraduate Internship at IPRH: Communications and Undergraduate Outreach

    David F. Prindable Undergraduate Internship at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH): Communications and Undergraduate Outreach -- Undergraduate majors in humanities disciplines are invited to apply for a paid internship in communications and undergraduate outreach at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH), the campus humanities hub. The successful candidate will assist IPRH with its communications strategy, particularly its email communications and social-media presence, in addition to serving as a IPRH’s undergraduate liaison and chief strategist on undergraduate engagement. This position is funded thanks to a generous gift from David F. Prindable.  To be considered for this internship, candidates must be humanities majors and possess strong writing and communications skills, excellent attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and an investigative mind. A broad interest in the humanities is preferred.

    The position commences October 23, 2019 and ends May 15, 2020. The Prindable intern will work approximately two to three hours per week, for 24 weeks, at the rate of $15.75 per hour (up to $1,000 per year). There is flexibility regarding the hours to be worked.

    David F. Prindable Undergraduate Internship at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH): Communications and Undergraduate Outreach - Application Deadline: September 29, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

    Undergraduate majors in humanities disciplines are invited to apply for a paid internship in communications and undergraduate outreach at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH), the campus humanities hub. The successful candidate will assist IPRH with its communications strategy, particularly its email communications and social-media presence, in addition to serving as IPRH’s undergraduate liaison and chief strategist on undergraduate engagement. This position is funded thanks to a generous gift from David F. Prindable.

    To be considered for this internship, candidates must possess strong writing and communications skills, excellent attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and an investigative mind. A broad interest in the humanities is preferred.

    The position commences October 16, 2017, and ends May 15, 2018. The Prindable intern will work approximately two to three hours per week, for 24 weeks, at the rate of $15.75 per hour (up to $1,000 per year). There is flexibility regarding the hours to be worked.

    Cultural Celebrations Performance Series:  4th Sunday of the month 1:00–1:45pm.  The family-friendly Cultural Celebrations Performance Series highlights music, dance, and storytelling from around the world on the 4th Sunday of the month 1:00–1:45pm. This series continues through the fall semester:

    September 24: Jason Finkelman:  A Philadelphia-born percussionist, Finkelman performs on African and Brazilian instruments handcrafted by African percussionist and instrument maker Adimu Kuumba. Finkelman specializes in the berimbau, a musical bow originating in Africa and recognized today in the accompaniment of the martial art capoeira. Finkelman's artistic concerns focus on improvised music, cross-cultural collaborative projects, and composition for dance, theater, and film.
