  • I-Watch Training Session

    The University of Illinois Police Department (UIPD) needs your assistance with crime prevention and reporting of suspicious and/or criminal activity within the campus area. As such, the Office of the Dean of Students is collaborating with UIPD to introduce members of the campus community—students, faculty, and staff—to the I-Watch program. I-Watch is a campus version of the Neighborhood Watch Program that exists in communities all across the country. In addition to receiving information on personal, home, and auto security, I-Watchers—the trained program participants—are given instruction in observation and reporting suspicious activity.     Winston C. Thompson is a Fellow in Residence at Harvard University's Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics and Assistant Professor (Education, Philosophy) at the University of New Hampshire. Professor Thompson's scholarship explores the ethical and political dimensions of educational policy and practice, including higher education access, affirmative action, and multiculturalism. His work on the nature of justice and the role of education in a pluralistic, democratic society has appeared in Educational Theory, Philosophy of Education, Teachers College Record, The Journal of Philosophy of Education, Educational Philosophy and Theory, and Studies in Philosophy and Education. He is working on a monograph entitled "Justice in the Balance: Revitalizing Politics and Education." He has also written on social media and is the creator of PIPEline (http://www.pipeline.fm/), a short-form interview podcast on contemporary research in philosophy of education.

  • Library Update for Fall 2022

    The Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library (SSHEL) is being consolidated into a single location on the first floor of the Main Library building. You now can find SSHEL services and staff in Room 101 of the Main Library building and recent print books for education, youth literature, and K-12 teaching materials in an adjacent room.

  • Eboni Zamani-Gallaher joins Graduate College

    Professor Eboni Zamani-Gallaher will serve as the associate dean of the Graduate College starting Aug. 16. The scholar will continue to serve as the associate head of the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership and as director of the Office of Community College Research and Leadership.

  • Two Education freshmen named Chancellor’s Scholars

    Freshmen Grace Oberg and Michael Rotter, both of whom are studying in the Department of Special Education, have been designated Chancellor’s Scholars in the Campus Honors Program this fall, chosen for their academic excellence and leadership potential.

  • EJP receives 2017 Community Impact Award

    The Education Justice Project (EJP) was announced as a co-recipient of the Community Impact Award from the C-U Immigration Forum and the Urbana Free Library. The award will be presented to the organization at the fourth annual Immigrant Welcome Award Ceremony and Celebration on Sept. 23.

    Happy Fall! The Student Sustainability Committee wishes to remind university faculty and staff that the deadline to submit a Step 1 Project Proposal is October 14, 2022. This deadline affects projects asking for over $10,000 in funding or projects not run by students.

  • SOPS 5th Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium

    We are the board of the Society of Postdoctoral Scholars (SOPS).  Currently, we are organizing our 5th Annual Postdoctoral Symposium, which will take place on February 6th, 2015.  We came by the College of Education office earlier this week to drop off a couple of flyers for the bulletin boards, and we were told to contact individual departments for distributing the symposium information through the listserv.  Could you please help us forward the announcement below to postdocs, graduate students, and faculty through the departmental mailing list?  Please feel free to contact us should you have additional comments or questions!  Thank you very much in advance!

    The registration for the 5th Annual Postdoctoral Research Symposium is now open!  The event will be held at the Beckman Institute on February 6th, 2015, and is open to all disciplines. The deadline for abstract submission and registration is January 16th, 2015. Audience will get to vote for outstanding presentations, and the chosen talk and poster finalists will be awarded cash prizes.  Several travel awards will also be provided for out-of-town presenters. Graduate student posters are also welcome!

  • Study Abroad in Spain!

    This spring the College of Education is offering an 8-week course aimed at providing students an overview of education in the Spanish region and a comparative experience between European and American education systems. The course involves a spring break trip to Barcelona and Tarragona, Spain.

  • Winners of 15th annual MLK contest announced

    Victor Perez, coordinator of operations at the Center for Education in Small Urban Communities, said this year’s MLK Creative Expressions Competition drew 109 entries from children in area K-12 schools, with the majority of submissions being essays and poems.

  • Faculty: Apply Today to Be a 2023-24 Public Engagement Fellow

    The Public Engagement Faculty Fellows Program is open to all full-time faculty (tenure-track, specialized, etc.) with their primary appointment in the College of Education. A maximum of four faculty fellows will be selected for the upcoming academic year. Faculty at the assistant professor level are especially encouraged to apply.

    This course looks at major learning theories as they apply to science education.  We will focus on major figures in and theories of learning that have had a substantial impact on science education research and practice, such as behaviorism, Piaget, Dewey, Vygotsky, information processing theories, situated learning, and constructivism, among others. While the class will tend to focus on examples from science and mathematics, students in areas other than science are welcome.

  • EPSY's Cromley Part of New LAS-funded Student Success Initiative Project

    The College of LAS chose five projects to receive funding for one year (AY23) as part of its pandemic-necessitated LAS Student Success Initiative. Cromley's project team will work on Reimaging the general chemistry experience: Enhancing learning outcomes and fostering belonging for under-represented students in STEM and pre-health majors.

    Description: EPS 421 (HDFS 424 and AFRO 421) is a sociological examination of racial and ethnic families across and within racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. and the basis of family diversity in various regions of the world. One of the highlights of this course is a focus on sociologist Gerhard Lenski's "The  Religious Factor" in ethnic diversity.  Topics will include: (1.) sociological theories, research, methods, concepts, issues, and debates related to race, gender, class+ diversity among families; (2.) the impact of changing racial and ethnic group populations in the U.S. and education, especially the education of children from ethnic minority and immigrant families; (3) the significance of diverse religious beliefs, practices, and customs among ethnic families; and (4.) religion as a basis of family ethnic cultural diversity, competition, and conflict in the U.S. and the world.

  • Professor Linda Herrera a Featured Speaker at UI Global Summit

    Professor Linda Herrera was a featured speaker at the campus' Global Summit, held on October 19 at the I Hotel, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The Summit was a one-day symposium held in honor of Vision 2030: Illinois’ Global Strategy.

    The panel was titled, “Supporting Youth Development for Global Change” and included Herrera and professors Phillip Cotton and Soo Ah Kwon.

  • Journal recognizes EPOL professors for well-cited paper

    A research paper written by David Huang and Denice Hood in 2013 has been recognized by The Internet and Higher Education journal as one of the publication’s five most highly cited papers from 2014 through June of 2016. Huang and Hood are both associate professors in the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership.

  • Seed Funding Program to Kickstart Applied Research on Campus

    The Illinois Applied Research Institute is launching a seed funding program to infuse ready-to-go applied research projects with the money needed to get past a developmental hurdle or a technical challenge. The Applied Research Seed Funding Program will fund projects in areas such as advanced materials, manufacturing technologies, cybersecurity, Big Data, plasma and laser-material interactions, petrochemicals and fuels, or energy generation, distribution, and control systems. To be eligible for seed funding, principal investigators must be University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign faculty or full-time research academic professionals. Learn more and apply.

    Educational Theory, published here at the University of Illinois, is seeking to hire a quarter-time research assistant for the coming academic year to perform various research functions and provide editorial, office, and website and social media support. Our office produces six issues of the journal each year.

    This is an annual nine-month position; however, continuation for additional years of support may be possible. The attached file includes the full job description.

  • Rebecca Ginsburg, EJP Awarded LAS Student Success Innovation Project Funding

    Congratulations to EPOL Professor and Education Justice Project Director Rebecca Ginsburg, who is part of a team awarded up to $100,000 from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as one of three projects in their Student Success Innovation program.

    Co-taught by scholars Chris Higgins and Anke Pinkert, the Introduction to Public Humanities course will be available for students during the Fall 2018 semester. Four themes will be covered in the experiential, interdisciplinary class: attention, avatars, voice, and walls.
