  • OCCRL’s Illinois Community College Leadership Institute the Start of Something Special

    Last spring, the Office of Community College Research and Leadership in the College of Education held the inaugural Illinois Community College Leadership Institute. The two-day event was at Parkland College in Champaign and brought together statewide community college scholars and practitioners who shared best practices in community college leadership.

    The ECMC Foundation is funding an effort to enhance equity in career and technical education, and the Office of Community College Research and Leadership in the College of Education will be a co-partner in the endeavor. The institutions within the robust partnership will develop resources that support community and technical colleges with the transition to online learning while working to reduce completion gaps.

  • Offices accepting proposals to fund research symposia

    In celebration of the University of Illinois sesquicentennial, the Office of the Chancellor and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research are now accepting proposals to fund four to six research symposia that tackle big-picture topics with clear societal impact and that showcase the university’s research strengths.

  • O'Leary Learning Center: Progress from Floor to Ceiling

    Construction is nearly completed on the O’Leary Learning Center, a sophisticated 4,400 square foot laboratory space in the College of Education. It is designed to advance research and teaching through enhanced collaboration of interdisciplinary research projects, provide improved online learning spaces, and enrich STEM instruction.

  • Online Ed.D. Student Christa Tinari to Lead Contemplative-Based Resilience Project

    Christa Tinari has a new role as Director of the Contemplative-Based Resilience Project at The Garrison Institute, a non-profit organization in New York state. The CBR Project combines research-based practices in mindful awareness and movement, compassion meditation, and education on the neurobiology of stress and resilience.

  • Online Programs | 2019 National Rankings Released

    On Tuesday, U.S. News & World Report released their 2019 Rankings for Online Programs, listing Illinois at #16 for Graduate Education Programs, up nine spots from #25 in 2018.

    Once again, the College of Education is proud to be recognized among the top Online Graduate Education Programs in the nation. Additionally, TheBestSchools.org has also recognized Illinois' online Human Resource Development master's program as top-notch in the country.

    Congratulations to faculty, staff, and administration for their efforts behind these important programs!

  • On-Site Background Checks - September 4, 2013

    Accurate Biometrics will be on site to administer fingerprint criminal background checks on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the College of Education in Room 192. 

    IF YOU ARE CONDUCTING RESEARCH IN LOCAL SCHOOLS THIS ACADEMIC YEAR:

    Visit the Bureau of Educational Research in Room 142 between August 26 and August 30, 2013 to secure an appointment time with an Accurate Biometrics representative during the time listed above. Please note that appointments will be handled in five-minute time blocks. This will be the only date during the Fall semester when an Accurate Biometrics representative will be on-site at the College.  We encourage you to take advantage of this service as background check requests that fall outside of this window will require researchers to visit the local Accurate Biometrics office.

    What to bring to your appointment:

    1. A valid, government issued picture ID (i.e., driver’s license, State ID, or passport). School IDs WILL NOT be accepted.
    2. Payment of $30.00 is required at the time of fingerprinting, and may be made via cash or money order made out to Accurate Biometrics. NO PERSONAL CHECKS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Although cash or money orders are preferred, credit card payments will be accepted with a mandatory $2.00 service fee assessment.

    Other important information:

    • You will be given a computer-generated receipt upon completion of the fingerprinting process. If a research grant will cover the costs of the background check, the researcher must first pay the fee to Accurate Biometrics and submit the receipt along with the approval of the Principal Investigator to the College Business Office for reimbursement.
    • The results of the background check will be sent by the Illinois State Police directly to the agency/individual requesting it on the form you complete. At no time will Accurate Biometrics receive the criminal history response.
    • If you miss Accurate Biometrics’ on-site services on the dates provided above, you will need to complete the form provided and visit their Champaign location (or another location most convenient to you). Please check their website often at www.accuratebiometrics.com for the most up-to date hours of operation & locations.
  • On-Site Researcher Background Checks Sign-Up | SAVE THE DATE

    Accurate Biometrics will visit the College of Education, Room 333, on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 between 10 a.m. and noon to administer fingerprint criminal background checks. You must have a background check on file to conduct research in local schools this academic year.

  • Over 200 entries received for MLK Creative Expressions Competition

    The Center for Education in Small Urban Communities received more than 200 entries for this year’s Creative Expressions Competition. The winners and honorable mention recipients were announced at the Jan. 23 MLK Jr. Community Celebration at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Essays, poems, songs, short stories, drawings, paintings, mixed media, multimedia, and sculptures were all accepted art forms for the contest.

  • Participants needed for research focus group

    Are you a queer, lesbian, or bisexual woman? Your opinion is needed for an upcoming research focus group taking place the evening of either April 18th or 20th. Participate in an interactive focus group about gender expression in LBQ women. Trans women are welcome! Two hours of research participation credit for a class can also be attained by participating.   • Part Time Teaching Position

    The Montessori Elementary School of Champaign Urbana is looking for an energetic and creative person to run our after school program five afternoons a week. Applicants must have experience working with small groups of school age children. Applicants should have great interpersonal skills, communicate effectively with faculty and students. We are seeking an individual who is organized, assertive, fun and enjoys working with children. Applicants should be able to supervise children outdoors in all weather and help them grow in their independence and social skills.Ideally, the applicant would also have experience teaching basic art skills to school age children in order to integrate art lessons into the elementary program curriculum two afternoons a week. Applicants should be able to plan lessons for elementary students with a wide range of art skills/interest. 

    Requirements - Background check, experience working with school age children, ability to be active and outside in all types of weather, help children use conflict resolution skills, be available for evening staff meetings and training sessions, provide references regarding experience working with children, must be 18 and have a high school diploma. Pay is based on experience and qualifications.

    Helpful but not required - Experience running school-age camp or similar program, a knowledge and interest in Montessori philosophy, a BA or some college experience.

    The Office of International Programs is offering a series of Passport Workshops during the Fall semester. The first workshop will be THIS Wednesday, September 21 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in Illini Hall Room 23. Students will have the opportunity to complete their passport application as well as get a FREE passport photo made! Registration for these workshops is required.

    Pathways to Results, Partnership and Planning for Student Success Grant - FY2017

    We are excited to share that the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) has released the FY2017 Pathways to Results: Partnership and Planning for Student Success Grant. The Pathways to Results (PTR) year one project, facilitated by the Office of Community College Research and Leadership, aims to assemble a meaningful plan for implementing an evidence-based improvement that addresses documented gaps in students’ equitable outcomes. Teams will participate in an intensive institute requiring both pre-work and follow-up conference calls to prepare for the final deliverable—an intervention plan that is eligible to be considered for a Year Two PTR grant to support implementation and scaling of the project intervention.

    There is a new economics of college in America. Millions of people enroll in higher education with plans to work, borrow, and conserve, only to find that their funds still fall short of today’s high college prices. How has this changed what it means to attend college? How do students make ends meet while pursuing degrees, and how can we make it easier for them to succeed? In this talk, Dr. Goldrick-Rab will discuss a six-year- long multi-method experimental study that sought to find out.

    Sara Goldrick-Rab is a Professor of Educational Policy Studies and Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Founding Director at the Wisconsin HOPE Lab. Her research examines the intended and unintended consequences of the college-for-all movement in the United States. She is the recipient of the William T. Grant Foundation’s Faculty Scholars Award and the American Educational Research Association’s Early Career Award. In fall 2016, the University of Chicago will publish her latest book, Paying the Price: College Costs, Financial Aid, and the Betrayal of the American Dream.

    Tanisha King-Taylor, a doctoral student in the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, has written a book that is a genuine reflection of her life and story of escaping the superwoman syndrome, the Speaker.   • Phi Kappa Phi Inductees for 2018-19

    Phi Kappa Phi was born in 1897, when 10 senior students, two faculty members and the University of Maine President created a new kind of honor society, one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign chapter began in 1933.

    Today, Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engages the community of scholars in service to others. We recognize and congratulate these 2018-2019 inductees from the College of Education.

  • Pilot Project Funding Available from TIER-ED

    The Technology Innovations in Educational Reserach and Design (TIER-ED) initiative announces a Pilot Projects Program designed to foster inter- or trans-disciplinary intellectual engagement through funding pilot or proof-of-concept projects to better position faculty teams for competitive external funding and have more collaborative research opportunities for students interested in pursuing graduate studies in TIER-ED focused areas.

    Congratulations to Education Policy, Organization & Leadership's Porshe Garner, Ph.D, who is the recipient of the AERA Arts Based Educational Research (ABER) Outstanding Dissertation Award for the best Doctoral Dissertation that explores, is an exemplar of, and pushes the boundaries of arts-based educational research. Garner will present highlights from her dissertation at the Annual Meeting.

    We seek a nationally known scholar with effective leadership qualities to serve as a full-time tenured Professor and head of the department, who will support a strong and diverse faculty as we fulfill the teaching, research, and service missions of the Department and College in a major research land-grant university. The Department consists of 23 nationally and internationally recognized tenure-track faculty and 6 clinical faculty, from racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
