  • POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Pre-Health Academic Advisor

    This position is a member of the Pre-Professional Advising team within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Department of Student Academic Affairs. In this role, the pre-health advisor develops and facilitates workshops and group information sessions on topics of interest to pre-health students. In individual appointments, the pre-health advisor engages undergraduate students in promoting their academic, professional, and overall development. The pre-health advisor evaluates students’ progress in pre-health related course work and provides education and guidance on bachelor-level and graduate level pre-health fields and programs, course registration and selection, and available University resources. The Pre-Professional Advising team is the primary undergraduate resource for pre-health and pre-law information at the University and works with students from all colleges as well as alumni. As such, the pre-health advisor is a primary resource for students in personal statement development, mock interviewing and interview skills, and assisting students in identifying health professions programs and careers. This position engages with college and departmental advisors as well as faculty to ensure that all parties are up to date on relevant pre-health topics and requirements. Opportunities also exist for teaching a first-year seminar course, thereby supporting students in their transition to college and the University to further encourage academic success and development.

    JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Psychologist (Office of Applied Psychological Services/Psychiatry)

    The Department of Psychology, in conjunction with the Department of Psychiatry, at the University of Illinois at Chicago is seeking a licensed psychologist to serve as a Clinical Assistant Professor. The position is a non-tenure track, 12-month appointment.  This position will be 60% in the psychology department, providing supervision and teaching, and 40% in the psychiatry department, providing direct service to patients. The 60% in psychology will entail providing therapy and assessment supervision to doctoral students through the Office of Applied Psychological Services (OAPS) and teaching one graduate or undergraduate course per semester in the Psychology department. OAPS is the training clinic for the Department’s APA-accredited Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and provides services to adults and children in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.  The Clinical Psychology Program endorses a scientist-practitioner training model, has been accredited by APA since 1974, and is a member of the Academy of Psychological Sciences. The 40% time in psychiatry will be spent providing direct clinical services to clients, often part of the UIC community, both in person and via telehealth. The psychiatry department one of the largest in the Midwest, with several nationally-recognized training programs and several fellowships. The Department is nationally known for clinical research in multiple areas, including anxiety and mood disorders, psychosis, late life depression, autism, addictions, mental health services, and women’s mental health.

    The Pipeline to Justice (P2J) scholarship and mentoring program is designed to support community organizers and activists in completing undergraduate degrees at UIC. Since 2012, the P2J program has been an academic conduit for students with non-traditional backgrounds who have a track-record of community organizing and commitments to social justice. 

    We are accepting applications for the 2021 academic year!

    This casual conversation with River Kerstetter (Oneida Nation) is part of the Alternative Spring Break series hosted by the Native American Support Program, The University of Illinois at Chicago.

    River Kerstetter is a citizen of the Oneida Nation and of mixed Indigenous/European descent. River is an artist and writer who believes that art and storytelling are vital parts of collective healing and connection, especially in Indigenous, Two-Spirit, and LGBTQIA+ communities who fight to be seen and safe every day. She has taught art for youth and young adults for eight years, including at the Chicago Center for Arts & Technology, Columbia College Chicago, and Working Classroom in Albuquerque, NM. She is a co-founder of TIES, a reading series that celebrates Indigenous, Two-Spirit, and LGBTQ+ writers, and a co-founder of the Center for Native Futures, a new Chicago non-profit that works to support Native artists. River grew up in occupied Pueblo lands (Central New Mexico) and now lives and works in occupied Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Odawa lands (Chicago).

    This casual conversation with Dr. Eli Suzukovich III (Little Shell Band of Chippewa-Cree/Krajina Serb) is part of the Alternative Spring Break series hosted by the Native American Support Program, The University of Illinois at Chicago.

    Dr. Eli Suzukovich III is an anthropologist with a focus on cultural resource management, ethnography, religion, oral history, and ethno-biology. Currently, Eli is a Research Scientist in the Negaunee Integrative Research Center at the Field Museum, where he is a member of the curation team for the renovation of the Native North America Hall. Along with museum work, Eli is a lecturer in the Environmental Policy and Culture Program at Northwestern and a faculty affiliate in the Native American and Indigenous Research Institute at Northwestern University.

    This Comedian Performance with Casey Brown (Ho-Chunk) is part of the Alternative Spring Break series hosted by the Native American Support Program, The University of Illinois at Chicago.

    Casey Brown moved from his home state of Wisconsin to takes classes at Second City, the world’s premier comedy writing and performing school. He soon became part of the local comedy scene producing and hosting multiple shows at The Vic Theater, The Gallery Cabaret and Bucktown Pub. He continues to be a leading voice in Chicago's small Indigenous comedy scene.

    "Casey Brown Chicago's Best (Only) American Indian Comedian” will speak to the trials of being in the minority of racial minorities in his people’s own country and how that effects life as a writer, director, producer and performer in the urban setting of Chicago.

  • Whose Land Are You On? Native History, Contemporary Issues, and Land Acknowledgements

    This virtual workshop is part of the Alternative Spring Break series hosted by the Native American Support Program, The University of Illinois at Chicago.

    Land acknowledgments have become common in academic spaces, as well as outside of academia, in schools, and at cultural, civic, and sporting events. Join us to gain a greater understanding of the significance of Native history, contemporary issues, and a land acknowledgment and how to create your own. This workshop will include a conversational presentation as well as a guided activity.

  • WiLS is hiring for a one-year, full-time fellowship position to work closely with the Ho-Chunk Nation Department of Historic Preservation (DoHP).

    I am excited to share an opportunity that WiLS (formerly Wisconsin Library Services) is offering, thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. WiLS is hiring for a one-year, full-time fellowship position to work closely with the Ho-Chunk Nation Department of Historic Preservation (DoHP).

    Fellows will work with the WiLS Project Director and with multiple divisions of the DoHP, including Hoocąk Waaziija Haci Language Division, and the Ho-Chunk Nation Museum and Cultural Center. This fellowship offers an opportunity to work on digital preservation and curation, Indigenous information issues, and professional development in the library/archives/museum/preservation field. Also, fellows will have a mentor to develop a learning and training plan to support their career goals and research interests while advancing the DoHP projects. 

    Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. WiLS will start the first review of applications on March 5, 2021.

    Job Summary:

    The Dean’s Office of the College of Applied Health Sciences (AHS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Recruitment. This full-time academic professional position provides leadership in undergraduate student recruitment and yield initiatives within the college. Using data driven metrics and best practices in marketing, the Assistant Dean for Recruitment provides overall leadership in planning, directing, implementing, and assessing recruitment and yield strategies to meet the enrollment goals of the College of Applied Health Sciences. This position is responsible for developing and maintaining partnerships with feeder high schools and community colleges related to student outreach and pipeline programs.  In addition, the Assistant Dean for Recruitment collaborates and communicates frequently with academic departments across the college and with the campus Office of Academic Enrollment Services on recruitment and yield initiatives. The Assistant Dean for Recruitment utilizes software to manage prospective student databases and communication plans.  The ideal candidate has previous recruitment and admissions experience, as well as a deep knowledge of recruitment policies and practices, and marketing strategies particularly as they pertain to undergraduate recruitment. Travel is necessary for this role.  Candidate must have excellent leadership, attention-to-detail, communication/marketing, organizational, and interpersonal skills.  A commitment to diversity and a client-centered, teamwork attitude are required.

  • Native Alliance Summit, Teach For America

    The second is the  Native Alliance Summit from November 6-8. This year’s virtual Native Alliance Annual Leadership Summit will bring together Teach For America’s American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawai’ian Indigenous internal and external community to build a coalition of relatives, supporters and mentors among Tribal Nations/Villages. Throughout the three day summit, participants will work together to build, strengthen, and share resources that support best practices and legislative advocacy for Native Education. Through collaboration, we will work to strengthen the inherent sovereignty of our Nations through Indigenous thought and philosophy and work to dismantle, decolonize, and Indigenize the education system that has historically harmed Indigenous communities.

  • Another Week of Great Career Events

     Careers in Student Affairs (CSA) is a 2-part panel discussion series. CSA: Impacting the Student Experience (Monday, October 19, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM) will be an engaging discussion with Student Affairs Professionals representing Student Conduct, Greek Life, Student Activities, and Housing. They will be sharing their career journeys and offering advice on how to pursue careers in Higher Education. This event is open to the public.

    From the Search to Settling In: Practical Tips for Job-Seekers with Disabilities (Tuesday, October 20, 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) will include a panel of professionals covering topics such as resume writing, knowing your rights and employee accommodations, as well as disclosure and bringing your full self to work. Valuable information and advice will be provided for individuals with disabilities as well as allies.

    The Peace Corps Information Session (Tuesday, October 20, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) gives you the opportunity to find out what they are doing during the current pandemic. Join the information session from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM and stay to talk to a representative from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

    The Graduate and Professional School Fair (Thursday, October 22, 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM) is a great opportunity to connect with over 50 graduate schools and professional programs located throughout the US.     The Health Professions Forum (HPF): Community Health and Advocacy (Thursday, October 22, 3:00 PM - 4:15 PM) is an opportunity to learn about various career roles that have an impact through community health education and advocacy. Panelists will share how their work is instrumental in advocating for, and educating communities on, public health issues within educational and non-profit settings.

    The Impact of Covid-19 in Healthcare and Public Health Forum (Thursday, 10/15, @ 3:00-4:15pm) is the first part of the Health Professions Forum (HPF).  A collaboration with Liberal Arts and Sciences, Applied Health Sciences, and Career Services, HPF is a collection of healthcare-focused programs designed to help students explore careers and connect with professionals working in hospitals, labs, education, non-profits, and other healthcare settings. During this first event, attendees can learn about the various career roles that focus on addressing a wide range of health topics that impact communities and populations, especially during this pandemic.
