  • Annual free book jackets & posters giveaway in Library

    It is time once again for the SSHEL book jacket and poster giveaway! This year the festivities take place the week of November 10th through the 14th in the Social Sciences, Health, and Education Library (100 Main Library). The giveaway will be going on during all hours that SSHEL is open. The fun begins in the School Collection Room (Room 112) at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 10th. Come and pick up free posters, book jackets, and more! Posters and book jackets are a great resource for:

    • decorating your classroom or office

    • book talk visual aids

    • art projects

    • library displays

    • creative writing (have students predict or create a story from the picture/title and write about it)

    Please share this information with anyone who might be interested. We will be giving the posters and book jackets away until they are all gone.     Guest Scholar and Speaker: Dr. Leonard Abbeduto, University of California, DavisDirector, UC Davis MIND Institute and Tsakopoulos-Vismara Endowed Chair, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, School of Medicine

    Dr. Abbeduto's research focuses on the development of language across the lifespan in individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. His current projects focus on the factors accounting for variation in the course of language in children, adolescents, and young adults with fragile X syndrome, autism, and Down syndrome.

  • A question for College's 'Those Who Excel' honoree

    Prior to the Oct. 22 Those Who Excel/Teacher of the year banquet in Normal, Ill., The News-Gazette asked some of the honorees: What does it mean to excel as an educator in today’s climate? Victor Perez, who coordinates the SOAR program, said that educators must continue to identify the most pressing needs in schools and communities, and that collaborations and partnerships are keys to success.

    This exhibition features an art-based research study conducted by (Elka) Elzbieta Kazmierczak, MFA, PhD, Adjunct Assistant Professor in the department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership. Participants of the study–students and C-U community members–expressed how they feel about their ethnic and cultural identities through drawings titled, Inside Me-Outside Me. About 50 colorful drawings and narratives are featured in the show, along with visualizations of the study results.

    Note: Many of the study/exhibition participants were recruited from the College of Education.

    Martinez Negrette's dissertation, “Bilingual Ways with Words: An Ethnographic Study of Language and Social Constructions in a Kindergarten Dual Language Class,” has been selected as second place in the 2021 American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) Outstanding Dissertation Competition sponsored by Educational Testing Services (ETS).

    Educational Psychology alumna Ayesha Boyce, PhD, was recently awarded the American Evaluation Association 2019 Marcia Guttentag Promising New Evaluator Award. This award, which she received at the American Evaluation Association (AEA) Conference, Nov. 12–16 in Minneapolis is presented to a promising new evaluator during the first five years after completion of his or her master’s or doctoral degree and whose work is consistent with the AEA Guiding Principles for Evaluator.

  • Be a Mentor: CU One-to-One Mentoring

    The One-to-One mentoring program matches willing adults with students in 3rd -7th grade.  The mentors receive an initial training and then come to the schools, during the school year, once a week to meet with their mentee.  The pairs play games, visit, eat lunch, and share together.  It is a hugely rewarding program that provides encouragement and support to kids who need it! Here is the link to our website: http://cu1to1.org/

  • Betty Trummel to Continue Alumni Speaker Series

    BETTY TRUMMEL is scheduled to speak at the second session of the Office of Advancement's Alumni Speaker Series on Friday, October 28 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. in the Education Building, Room 22. Snakcs will be provided!

    Betty Trummel has 35 years of elementary classroom experience. She earned her BS in elementary education, and a master's degree in science, outdoor education. She is a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. Three Antarctic deployments provided Betty the opportunity to work alongside outstanding science researchers. Additionally, Betty has coordinated teacher exchange programs in Sweden and has traveled to Zambia to model literacy instruction to teachers and students.

  • Black Graduate Student Summer Support Circle

    As Black graduate students, we may be shouldering multiple stressors such as general graduate student struggles, virus related injustices, and household/family responsibilities. During this pandemic, it’s not unusual to start to feel fatigue (if you’re not already exhausted), to notice emotions (e.g. fear, grief, uncertainty, etc.), and have periods where you’re overwhelmed. Within this circle, we will cultivate our cultural resources and the power of the community for support. We will facilitate discussions and dialogues about healing, change, and power.

    Please join the CAS for a conversation with Los Angeles-based artist, activist, educator, and public speaker Patrisse Cullors. Ms. Cullors is the Co-Founder of the Black Lives Matter Global Network and Founder of the LA-based grassroots organization Dignity and Power Now. For the last 20 years, she has been on the frontlines of criminal justice reform and led the Reform LA Jails “Yes on R” campaign, a ballot initiative voted on in March 2020.
