  • Summer Study Abroad Applications Due March 15

    Study broad this summer through the College of Education in one of six different countries: Greece, China, New Zealand, Singapore, Tanzania, or Indonesia! During these two- to three-week-long trips, you will have the opportunity to work first-hand in local schools around the world, engage in cultural activities, and visit many sites. The deadline to apply is Friday, March 15, so do not hesitate to stop by Room 260A to talk to someone about a program that best fits you!

  • CU 'Celebrity' READ Posters | Nominate a Poster-Worthy Reader

    The University Library is running a reading campaign modeled off of the American Library Association’s Celebrity READ Posters, featuring local 'celebrities.' Nominate someone you admire to be featured on a poster, to be hung in the Main and UGL Libraries (those depicted will also receive a copy.) Nominations are open until March 15, and can be made here

  • Food For Thought App Wins Two 1st Prizes at 2019 Engineering Open House

    Congratulations to Emma Mercier, C&I professor and developer of the Food For Thought app, which won two first place awards at the 2019 Engineering Open House (EOH) held March 8-9. Lu Lawrence and Susan Kelly, both PhD students in Curriculum & Instruction and members of Mercier's lab group, brought home the top prize in both the Innovation in Energy and Sustainable Solutions categories. 

  • Campus-wide Student Memorial Ceremony

    The Office of the Dean of Students invites all university community members to gather to remember and honor students in our Illinois student family who have passed away in the last year. Taking place on Thursday, March 28 at 5 p.m. in Illini Union Room C, this ceremony will include selected readings, vocal performance, and more.

    Congratulations to Education Policy, Organization & Leadership's Rachel Roegman, who will be recognized with a 2019 AERA-Division A Early Career Award at the organization's Annual Meeting in April.

  • Dixson Moderates Town Hall Meeting on Public Education with State of Louisiana Legislators

    Adrienne Dixson, professor in Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, was recently asked to moderate a Town Hall meeting, sponsored by the Louisiana Public School Coalition, intended for teachers and community members to talk with several state legislators about the current status of public education. The meeting was held on March 14, and we followed up with Dixson afterward.

  • OCCRL Awards Gates Foundation Grants

    The Office of Community College Research and Leadership is pleased to announce the recipients of two grants sponsored by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Requests for proposals for both grants were announced in October 2018.

    Dr. Adrienne Dixson, professor in the department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, has been named the 2019 Willystine Goodsell Award Winner, bestowed by the AERA special interest group Research on Women and Education.

  • 5th International CREA Conference Program Available

    On Tuesday, March 26, the Center for Culturally Responsive Evaluation and Assessment begins its fifth annual gathering with pre-conference workshops. The conference gets underway Wednesday, March 27 and runs through Friday, March 29 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, Illinois.

    Create Your Own Online Course Workshop Begins April 17

    CITL will be hosting the “Create Your Own Online Course” workshop on April 17, 18, & 19 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. each day. This is open to faculty, staff, eLearning Professionals, and TAs who want to learn best practices for creating an online course. The workshop is free of charge. You can attend in-person, or there will be an option to join remotely via a Zoom web-conferencing session. This is a particularly good opportunity for anyone interested in earning the Certificate in Technology-Enhanced Teaching. Please RSVP for the workshop by April 15.

    Congratulations to Education Policy, Organization & Leadership's Porshe Garner, Ph.D, who is the recipient of the AERA Arts Based Educational Research (ABER) Outstanding Dissertation Award for the best Doctoral Dissertation that explores, is an exemplar of, and pushes the boundaries of arts-based educational research. Garner will present highlights from her dissertation at the Annual Meeting.

    Curriculum & Instruction Assistant Professor Idalia Nunez has been recognized with three awards in 2019 for her outstanding dissertation.

  • Chancellor Michael Aiken to be Awarded at 2019 Convocation

    Michael T. Aiken, who served as the sixth chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1993-2001, will be awarded an honorary PhD this spring. Chancellor Aiken’s visionary leadership laid a foundation for transparent strategic planning, robust philanthropic support, experiential learning for students, and support for translational research as an engine of economic development.

  • Sarah Zehr Honored with CAPE Award

    Congratulations to Education Policy, Organization & Leadership alumna and adjunct assistant professor Sarah Zehr, who has been named a 2019 Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence (CAPE) awardee. The CAPE award was established to recognize academic professionals for their work, personal and professional contributions. Individuals are nominated, reviewed by a committee, and approved by Chancellor Robert Jones.

  • Special Education Professor Emeritus Bob Henderson Passes Away

    It is with much sadness that we report the recent passing of our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Bob Henderson. He died peacefully in his sleep at age 94. As one of the true pioneers in the field of Special Education, he will be missed greatly. More information to come in the near future as plans are made to honor and remember Dr. Henderson.

  • Database Trial: APA's PsycEXTRA

    The Library is offering a trial of a database that includes “grey literature” resources in the social and behavioral sciences. PsycEXTRA is an APA database that compiles what is known as grey literature, materials that go beyond traditional peer-reviewed research material. It includes resources such as conference materials, factsheets, reports, standards/guidelines, and other hard-to-find content.

    The trial is available until April 24. If it gets a lot of use and we receive positive feedback, we will consider subscribing to it. Please spread the word about the trial if you are interested, and feedback is welcome. Thank you!

  • Seeking Editorial Assistant(s) for Educational Theory for the 2019–2020 Academic Year

    Educational Theory, published here at the University of Illinois, is seeking to hire a quarter-time research assistant for the coming academic year to perform various research functions and provide editorial, office, and website and social media support. Our office produces six issues of the journal each year.

    This is an annual nine-month position; however, continuation for additional years of support may be possible. The attached file includes the full job description. 

    If you are interested, please submit a one-page letter of application to Nicholas Burbules by Monday, April 22, along with a resume and three references. In your letter, please describe any relevant work experiences you might have had (editorial experience, work with similar publications, experience with web or social media projects, etc.).     Phi Kappa Phi was born in 1897, when 10 senior students, two faculty members and the University of Maine President created a new kind of honor society, one that recognized excellence in all academic disciplines. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign chapter began in 1933.

    Today, Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engages the community of scholars in service to others. We recognize and congratulate these 2018-2019 inductees from the College of Education.

    Each year the Education Alumni Association (EAA) selects a bachelor's, master's/advanced certificate, and doctoral student to receive the Outstanding Student Medal, which is presented annually at the College of Education Convocation. EAA and the Office of Advancement in the College of Education are pleased to announce the three 2018-2019 deserving recipients of this prestigious award.

  • Prudential Financial Commits $10M to Rutgers University-Newark Program, Headed by Alum Timothy Eaton

    Newark, NJ (May 7, 2019)—Rutgers University-Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor announced today that Prudential Financial has committed $10 million to the Honors Living-Learning Community (HLLC) at Rutgers-Newark – the largest donation ever to Rutgers-Newark – to create the Prudential Scholars Program for Newark residents. The gift will create cohorts of Newark residents in the HLLC known as Prudential Scholars and provide them with scholarships to cover tuition and fees, as well as room and board, during their full-time study at Rutgers–Newark. The Prudential Scholars will have access to resources to help them build their entrepreneurial skills and the social networks to empower them to become agents of positive change in the city. Tim Eatman, inaugural Dean of the HLLC, sees investments like Prudential’s as significantly advancing efforts to realize the vision to develop and activate the HLLC as a national model.

  • Adler University Recognizes Rebecca Ginsburg as “Social Justice Visionary”

    Adler University has announced Rebecca Ginsburg, co-founder and director of the Education Justice Project, will be recognized with its “Social Justice Visionary” Award during an event on May 16, marking the public launch of the University’s “The Campaign for Social Justice.” This will be the university’s first public campaign to fund scholarships, groundbreaking research, strategic partnerships, and capital projects.

  • Alumna Karen Graves receives Brickman Teaching Award from Denison University

    Denison University honored an outstanding professor with the prestigious Charles A. Brickman Teaching Excellence Award at the college’s Academic Awards Convocation held on Friday, April 12, in Swasey Chapel. Karen Graves, professor of educational studies, was honored with the 2019 Brickman award, which is given to members of the faculty who are master craftsmen in the profession and models of dedication to students and to student learning. The recipient has demonstrated a vibrant interest in the learning process, as well as an understanding of teaching as a continuously evolving art form.

    Graves joined Denison in 1993. She holds a B.S., M.Ed., and Ph.D., from the University of llinois, Urbana-Champaign. Graves is a professor and chair of the Department of Education.

  • Exploring Education Summer Camp

    High school students from around the state of Illinois joined us for the first session of Exploring Education Summer Camp in June. Campers spent a week living in dorms, visiting the University Primary School, touring the IDEALL lab, conquering an escape room, meeting fellow future Illini, and more.

    The second session of camp will begin this Sunday, July 14. We can't wait to meet the new campers!

  • O'Leary Learning Center: Progress from Floor to Ceiling

    Construction is nearly completed on the O’Leary Learning Center, a sophisticated 4,400 square foot laboratory space in the College of Education. It is designed to advance research and teaching through enhanced collaboration of interdisciplinary research projects, provide improved online learning spaces, and enrich STEM instruction.

    Description: EPS 420 Sociology of Education is a sociological examination of education and schooling in society. It can be used to fulfill the EPOL social foundations requirement for Master’s students and advanced hours for Learning and Education Studies (LES) majors. Students will: (1.) learn about how major sociological theories/theorists view and explain education and its relationship to society; (2.) become familiar with sociological concepts, assumptions, questions, research, methods, issues, and debates related to education/schooling in various school and societal contexts; (3.) analyze race/gender/class+ diversity in education and society, including experiences, representations, opportunities, and challenges of students, teachers, and administrators in various school settings and eras; and (4.) assess the educational impact and legacies of teacher and student-led movements in education and society, such as the student free speech,  African American, Mexican American, Asian American, Native American, women/feminist, anti-war,  special education, disability, LGBTQ+, anti-poverty, language minority, immigrant, and migrant farm worker rights movements.

    Description: EPS 421 (HDFS 424 and AFRO 421) is a sociological examination of racial and ethnic families across and within racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. and the basis of family diversity in various regions of the world. One of the highlights of this course is a focus on sociologist Gerhard Lenski's "The  Religious Factor" in ethnic diversity.  Topics will include: (1.) sociological theories, research, methods, concepts, issues, and debates related to race, gender, class+ diversity among families; (2.) the impact of changing racial and ethnic group populations in the U.S. and education, especially the education of children from ethnic minority and immigrant families; (3) the significance of diverse religious beliefs, practices, and customs among ethnic families; and (4.) religion as a basis of family ethnic cultural diversity, competition, and conflict in the U.S. and the world.

  • Illini Fest Paints Chicago Orange and Blue

    Illini friends and family packed the Park Grill Plaza in Millennium Park on the afternoon of July 18 for the first-ever Illini Fest event. University units and colleges had their orange and blue on display for hundreds of Chicagoans passing by the Bean, including Illinois alumni, current students, and even future Illini.
