  • Over 200 entries received for MLK Creative Expressions Competition

    The Center for Education in Small Urban Communities received more than 200 entries for this year’s Creative Expressions Competition. The winners and honorable mention recipients were announced at the Jan. 23 MLK Jr. Community Celebration at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. Essays, poems, songs, short stories, drawings, paintings, mixed media, multimedia, and sculptures were all accepted art forms for the contest.

  • UPDATED: Education Leads Several Funded Projects in 2021-22 Call to Action to Address Racism & Social Injustice Research Program

    Chancellor Jones has announced the first U of I projects to be awarded funding under this $2 million annual commitment by the university to respond to the critical need for higher ed institutions across the nation to prioritize research focused on systemic racial inequities and injustices, as well as the expansion of community-based knowledge that advances the understanding of systemic racism and generationally embedded racial disparity.

  • Graduate Student Academic Review

    The College of Education online academic review process has begun.  All graduate students are required to complete a self-review by January 15, 2014, irrespective of whether you plan to graduate in December 2013 or May 2014.  If you are a master degree student, you will note  the form includes many doctoral milestones which you can disregard.  At a minimum, you do need to upload a resume and fill in the courses you plan to complete.  The review is a check for you and your advisor that you are making progress to your degree.

  • Alumnus Scott Woods recognized for outstanding research in middle-level education

    College of Education alumnus Scott C. Woods is the recipient of this year’s Graduate Student Award from the Middle Level Education Research Special Interest Group, an affiliate of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

  • Leading Forward: Strategies for Innovative Leadership

    Designed for senior-level leaders in the Champaign-Urbana school districts, this inaugural three-day program from the Executive Leadership Academy will provide participants with an opportunity to collaborate with peers while engaging in a rich experiential learning environment designed to fuel innovation in leadership. Leaders will return to their districts for the new school year equipped and energized to advance as a groundbreakers, decision-maker, and change agent.

  • Associate Professor Meghan Burke Named a Fellow of the AAIDD

    Special Education's Burke is among the select individuals promoted to Fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and will be honored at the AAIDD's 144th Annual Meeting this summer.

    Two members of the College of Education are among the 23 faculty and staff members and graduate teaching assistants honored for excellence in teaching, mentoring and advising through the 2019 Campus Awards. 

  • EPOL candidate named director at Purdue University

    Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership doctoral candidate Xavier Hernandez has been selected as the next director of the Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center at Purdue University. Hernandez is currently a graduate assistant at the Asian American Cultural Center at the University of Illinois.

  • Prof. Rodney Hopson Named Co-PI for New NSF INCLUDES Program

    Hopson part of NSF program with new funding to develop partnerships among stakeholders across the public, private and academic sectors, share promising practices for broadening participation and other useful data, contribute to the knowledge base on broadening participation in STEM through research, and establish a framework for supporting communications and networking among partners.

    Excellence Professor Dr. Kern Alexander, a faculty member in the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, will be the 2016 Distinguished Educational Research Lecturer at the College of Education at Kansas State University.

  • Food For Thought App Wins Two 1st Prizes at 2019 Engineering Open House

    Congratulations to Emma Mercier, C&I professor and developer of the Food For Thought app, which won two first place awards at the 2019 Engineering Open House (EOH) held March 8-9. Lu Lawrence and Susan Kelly, both PhD students in Curriculum & Instruction and members of Mercier's lab group, brought home the top prize in both the Innovation in Energy and Sustainable Solutions categories.

  • Ashley M. Davis Named Strive Awardee from Illinois Women's Resource Center

    Ashley Davis, Visiting Coordinator for Undergraduate Recruitment and Career Services, is the winner of the Advocate Award, part of the larger Strive Awards from the Illinois Women's Resource Center.

  • EPOL alumnus named Champion of Change by White House

    Robert Scott, Ph.D. '11 EPOL, was named a Champion of Change by the White House for his work as executive director of the Cornell Prison Education Program (CPEP) at Cornell University. CPEP provides college-level liberal arts education to qualified incarcerated students in upstate New York prisons and is a response to the challenge of mass incarceration in the United States.

  • C&I's Rochelle Gutierrez Awarded Spencer Foundation Grant

    Professor Rochelle Gutierrez is a principal investigator on a $500,000 project funded by the Spencer Foundation, titled, "Political Conocimiento in Teaching Mathematics: Preparing Teachers to Advocate for Students."

  • Hedda Meadan-Kaplansky Receives Provost's Campus Distinguished Promotion Award

    Eleven faculty members on campus, including Special Education's Hedda Meadan-Kaplansky, have been honored with the Provost’s Campus Distinguished Promotion Award for 2019.

  • Exploring Education Summer Camp

    High school students from around the state of Illinois joined us for the first session of Exploring Education Summer Camp in June. Campers spent a week living in dorms, visiting the University Primary School, touring the IDEALL lab, conquering an escape room, meeting fellow future Illini, and more.

    The second session of camp will begin this Sunday, July 14. We can't wait to meet the new campers!

  • Special Education Professor Emeritus Bob Henderson Passes Away

    It is with much sadness that we report the recent passing of our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Bob Henderson. He died peacefully in his sleep at age 94. As one of the true pioneers in the field of Special Education, he will be missed greatly. More information to come in the near future as plans are made to honor and remember Dr. Henderson.

    Ruedas-Gracia Keynote Speaker for First-Gen Week at Texas State University

    Nidia Ruedas-Gracia, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology is invited to be the keynote speaker during First-Gen Week at Texas State University. Ruedas-Gracia's keynote address, titled "The FLI Ride: Developing a First-Generation/Low-Income Story of Success", will outline how first-generation/low-income (FLI, pronounced FLY) college students are trailblazers and can customize their college experience with the support of their institution for optimal success. Ruedas-Gracia's keynote will be held at the LBJ Student Center Ballroom on Thursday, November 9th, 2023.

  • EPOL's Wen-Hao David Huang Work Recognized by School of Social Work

    David Huang, professor in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, collaborated on the project, "Identifying Depression through Early Awareness (IDEA) Women's Health Coalition," with School of Social Work faculty and was awarded the Dean's Prize for Innovation and Collaboration by Dean Steven Anderson.

  • Graduate Assistant

    Diversity and Social Justice Education is looking for undergraduate students to facilitate I-Connect Diversity and Inclusion Workshops starting in Spring 2014. The I-Connect Diversity and Inclusion Workshop is a brand new initiative of the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations and the Division of Student Affairs. During these workshops, new students will take a look beyond “diversity” and focus on some of the skills that we all use that promote inclusion and community.

    We will soon start holding interviews for I-Connect facilitators. Experience facilitating difficult conversations is a must! The position is paid, and interviews will be held in mid-October. Students of color, LGBTQ, and students with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

    Congratulations to Educational Psychology doctoral student María B. Serrano Abreu, who is part of the first cohort of Interseminars graduate fellows: nine students from a range of disciplines and home colleges, including Education, Fine and Applied Arts, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. These fellows are funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

    Jill Donnel Selected as Council on Teacher Education's Executive Director

    Join us in welcoming Jill Donnel, Ed.D., to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as Executive Director of the Council on Teacher Education. Most recently, Donnel served as Assistant Director for Undergraduate Programs and Advising at Illinois State University's College of Education, School of Teaching, one of the largest teacher preparation departments in the nation.

    The goal of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program is to build international relationships to help solve global challenges. Bryan-Silva was awarded a Fulbright grant to conduct nine months of dissertation research in Montevideo, Uruguay.

    Magen Rooney-Kron, doctoral student in the Department of Special Education, has won a 2019 Research Interest Network Scholarship from the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD).

  • Hedda Meadan-Kaplansky

    Meadan-Kaplansky Receives $2M Institute of Education Sciences Grant

    The study, which will be conducted in partnership with Michigan State University, will evaluate Family Telepractice Augmentative and Alternative Communication Modeling (FamTAM) Intervention. Meadan-Kaplansky will serve as co-PI, and work with IT Partners at Education to develop a digital learning platform.

    Dr. Jennifer Delaney, an associate professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization & Leadership, has received the Outstanding Article of the Year Award from the Journal of Education Finance.

  • Upcoming registration for Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK)

    The Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) is broadly recognized by Chinese educational institutions and employers and provides Chinese learners a means to assess their proficiency. The Confucius Institute at Illinois serves as a test center for the online HSK test, two of which will be available to take on April 16 at the Education building.

    Author and Professor Emerita of Economics Nancy Folbre, of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, will be the speaker of a Sept. 17 lecture and discussion titled "The Rise and Fall of Public Higher Education." She will also host a colloquium earlier in the day, sponsored by the College of Education and the Forum on the Future of Public Education.
